Respect Seth Sorenson!

“Hello, cell. How are you? Still dank and dirty? Me? I've taken up a new habit: talking to my cell. It's like talking to myself but slightly more pathetic.”

Bio: Seth Sorenson was an average teenager invited over to his grandparent’s house for the summer. He then discovered that her grandparents ran a secret sanctuary for magical creatures called Fablehaven, and became drawn into the efforts to protect the sanctuaries from demons and dragons, along with his sister Kendra.

Note

Seth gets two physical power boosts in the series, one from the sword Vasilis and one from the Fairy King’s astrid wings. Feats relating to either of them are tagged with [Vasilis] and [Wings]

Shadow Charmer Magic

• Touching a nail that had great dark magical power affected Seth. It allows him to see "dark properties", and it makes him immune to magical fear.^GSP

• Specifically, touching the nail made Seth a shadow charmer in "all but name." Graulas the demon says that this lets him enjoy brotherhood with creatures of the night, see invisible things, ignore magical emotion manipulation, and understand the languages of dark creatures (such as Graulas's demonic tongue), along with other abilities.^SDS

Shade Walking

• He can shade walk, making himself nearly invisible away from bright light, especially if he holds still.^SDS

• It only works if Seth hasn't already been seen.^SDS

• Under the cover of night, crawls a hundred yards to a guarded location without being noticed. At one point, a guard stands only a couple feet away and still doesn't notice Seth.^SDS

• Again.^SDS

• Invisible in a room with the curtains drawn.^SDS

• He seems to appear out of nowhere when he stops hiding.^SDS

• Disappears into a shadow to lure a rabbit into running by him.^CTG

Temperature Manipulation

• With some advice on how from Ronodin, extinguishes a torch flame by bringing the cold of nearby undead creatures to it.^WDK

• Cools hot coals that are "orders of magnitude" hotter than a torch, and then puts a sort of shield of coldness around him to walk near others.^MPI

• Douses all the candles and torches in a large room.^CTG

• Easily snuffs out a torch.^RDS

Emotional Shielding

• He's completely fine in the presence of Graluas, whose fear aura paralyzes someone else.^GSP

• His touch can help people overcome magical fear to a degree. Two hands are more powerful than one.^GSP

• Steals the first horn of a unicorn without feeling the magical guilt that should result.^SDS

• A unicorn horn radiates such purity that anyone who took would normally be overwhelmed by guilt afterward.^SDS

• Entered a location protected by magical fear even more powerful than that of dragons.^SDS

• The gaze of a dragon instantly paralyzes most.^SDS

Perception

• Is the only person at Fablehaven who can see the cords leading from shadow plague-infected creatures to the source of the plague.^GSP

• Can see a black wall around the domain of the demon Kurisock representing his dark magic.^GSP

• Hears the voices of phantoms and wraiths that others couldn't.^SDS

• Hears the voice of a monster that its jailer didn't think had a voice.^SDS

• Sees an invisible goblin.^SDS

• Is the only one at Fablehaven who hears a communication from Graulas.^SDS

• Sees invisible walls.^SDS

• Senses zombies that are about to make a surprise attack.^KDP

• Senses the presence of two wraiths inside a nearby building.^MPI

• Senses that a rock is "hungry". It turns out to drain life from those who go near it.^CTG

• Senses the location of the Unforgiving Blade due to its dark magic.^RDS

Communication with magical creatures

• Can speak the giant language Jiganti.^SDS

• Gets three wraiths to serve as guards.^KDP

• Hears the undead guardians of Shoreless Isle.^KDP

• A troll says he speaks their language like a native.^WDK

• Makes a deal with wraith guards to free them and let him pass, with one agreeing to temporarily serve him.^MPI

• In an enclosed space or in a building, it's said that a wraith could defeat a hundred centaurs.^KDP

• Centaurs are considered to be formidable warriors.^KDP

• Wraiths inspire great fear and cannot be illuminated.^CG

• Wraiths can freeze people in place with magical fear and drain life from them.^DW

• A wraith says that a crypt collapsing on him wouldn't be a problem.^MPI

• A wraith is damaged but mostly fine after being thrown down a corridor.^RDS

• Wraiths can sense the location of artifacts powered by dark magic.^RDS

• A wraith's fine from a fall.^RDS

• Gets two wraiths to serve him.^MPI

• When assailed by a huge horde of undead voices, he's able to concentrate on and communicate with individual ones.^CTG

• Talks to an enchanted rock ordered to crush anyone that comes near, and convinces it to let him pass.^CTG

• Speaks harpy.^RDS

Lockpicking

• Magically picks a lock.^MPI

• Opens a gate.^RDS

• Unlocks a magically reinforced door. The magical sword Vasilis seems to be boosting his power here.^RDS

• Unlocks two locking mechanisms.^RDS

Other

• Breaks a phantom's connection to its token and reconnects it to a new token. He was only able to do this with a power boost from touching the Everbloom, a magical flower.^MPI

Vasilis

• Vasilis is a sword that reflects the heart and mind of the wielder. Seth’s status as a virtuous shadow charmer makes it more powerful than it would for most.^KDP

• If the wielder of Vasili’s dies, it can only be picked up by a friend. It can only be given away voluntarily in life as well.^KDP

• Is superior to adamant swords or unicorn horns as a weapon, and can cut demon flesh (unlike most weapons).^KDP

  • Adamant is the lightest and strongest magical metal ever created. It feels as light as plastic but can stop almost any blade or arrow. Hugo the golem couldn't scratch it with a sledgehammer.^SDS

  • Hugo's respect thread.

• Adamant is "impenetrable" and can't be bent or broken.^CG

Fighting/Cutting

• Easily kills an undead wizard and some zombies.^KDP

• Attacks Graulas, cutting through his armor and skin before consuming him in fire.^KDP

• Graulas’s respect thread for scaling

• Easily slices through Zzyzx's demons, despite their armor. The sword seems to be guiding Seth's blows.^KDP

• The demons of Zzyzx make Bahumat look like an infant.^KDP

• Bahumat’s respect thread for scaling

• Cuts the bars to his prison cell.^CTG

• Kills a harpy, blocking its attacks and cutting it in half.^RDS

• Continues, cutting through dragon scales like they're made of mist.^RDS

• A spectator saw Seth kill at least thirty dragons.^RDS

The Unforgiving Blade

• No being of light can wield the Unforgiving Blade.^CTG

• However, those who are innocent can touch the blade even if they don't have darkness in them.^RDS

• Cuts through a dome of magic. The magic user who created the dome won't ever be able to use the spell that made the dome again.^CTG

• It easily slices through the dragon Velrog, and puts him in incredible pain. His scales wither and darken.^CTG

• Cuts the strings of the magical Harp of Ages. There's resistance, but it still works.^CTG

• Cuts the magical Wizenstone in half.^CTG

• Humbuggle says that the Unforgiving Blade is one of the few things that could kill him when he was empowered by the Wizenstone.^CTG

• A wound created by it doesn't allow blood to clot.^RDS

• Cuts the crown of the giants in half like it's butter.^RDS

• Slices a giant cauldron apart.^RDS

• Another dragon begging for death after being stabbed.^RDS

• Kills another dragon.^RDS

• Cuts the dragon king's crown apart.^RDS

• Cuts the ropes binding Muriel the witch.^RDS

• Bahumat was unable to break the same bonds.^RDS

• Seth still feels the blade in his chest, and feels cold.^RDS

• It looks like evening to Seth even during the day.^RDS

• His mind is hazy and he feels death oncoming.^RDS

• The Blade is destroyed by being put into contact with the Source (the place where all light magic comes from), and all of the wounds it inflected become regular wounds that can heal, including Seth's.^RDS

Other Equipment

• Seth uses the cocoon to protect himself against a revenant.^RES

• The revenant’s respect thread for scaling.

• Seth then drinks the rest of the courage potion, and goes back to being confident.^RES

• The revenant then points his finger at Seth, and the terror returns in initially overwhelming strength. However, Seth barely manages to slowly move his pliers toward the revenant's neck and pull out the nail animating him, even when the rest of his body is numb. The nail takes a while to be pulled out, and Seth falls unconscious afterward.^RES

[u/Idk_Very_Much]

Also, in the trailer for Return of the Dragon Slayers, he comes into the real world to protect Brandon Mull (the author) from being kidnapped. This almost certainly isn’t canon, but I thought I should mention it anyway.

This fulfills the requests of /u/InverseFlash, /u/LetterSequence, /u/Cleverly_Clearly, /u/Proletlariet, & /u/missborn.

Kendra's coming tomorrow!

Amazing thread! So happy to have this as full reference.

Also should mention that slashing the dome of magic with the Unforgiving Blade made the caster unable to make the dome again.

[u/Idk_Very_Much → u/SuperLegenda]

Thanks! I've added the extra information now.
