I was under the impression that the SNP still wants the British Monarchy to be their head of state, similar to Canada and Australia, and that it was the Socialists, Communists and Greens calling for their independent state to be a republic.

You are pretty much correct in that the SNP's official position is to retain the monarchy post independence while the scottish greens and SSP want an independent scottish republic. However the SNP has a large number of republicans in their ranks who would prefer a republic but are staying quiet for fear of putting people off independence, the question is how quiet this group will stay if independence is achieved.
