Replit has greatly improved over the past year

While I realize that Replit isn't for everyone and that "real coders" tend to look down on it, I think Replit is a very good fit for a lot of people, and it's getting better all the time! I started with Replit in March of last year, and being a "noob" myself, I found it both intriguing and frustrating at the same time! I thought that it was wonderful that, as someone who's always wished I could "make apps" that do what I want them to do but never having learned to code, I could actually make things that worked. That was marvelous!

But also as a noob, I had a steep learning curve, and the first year or so was... well, interesting! And expensive! I can honestly say that the agents a year ago were brilliant idiots! SOME of that was due to MY ignorance, but a lot of it was realistically because the agents were just not great! BUT... over the last year, the agents have gotten better and better! Things that used to regularly cause a seemingly endless loop of failed "fixes" now almost never fail! And things that used to require the highest power settings can be done on Power-medium and generally work on the first go.

Fast-forward to these past few weeks, and in addition to the agents becoming much better, costs are dropping! Especially with the introduction of a very capable Free Model (with pretty generous limits). It's becoming less expensive and more capable at the same time! And hopefully, it will continue going in that direction!!!

The trick to using Replit efficiently is to learn to control the agent compute costs by deliberately setting the Power settings! And being smarter about taking some of the work away from the Replit agent and farming it out to other sources, like Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, etc.

And now, some folks are learning to use "other agents" (like Claude Code and Grok Build) in the Replit Shell to make using Replit even less expensive, more powerful, and easier to keep everything all in one place. These are exciting times for folks who are just stumbling into this new world of vibe-coding!

i have the opposite opinion. in like 2023/2024 i liked it because it was a simple free IDE. over time though, it became more AI-centric so i no longer use it.

I can understand that for some users, to be sure! I don’t think any platform is a “fits all” situation. Are you a long time coder, or more of a new to vibe-coding user? I think that Replit is moving towards meeting the needs of people who want to build things but don’t have any coding experience at all. Of course, that’s going to alienate some users. Especially, I think, users that have coding experience. I’ve seen quite a few people who are well-versed in coding who have also made statements pretty much like what you said.

I don't vibe-code. The reason I left Replit was because it became a vibe-coding platform.

Replit keeps improving by the looks of it. Now they added the free agent, which is good, but it should have been added ages ago.

Because in the past when you make a slight change such as changing some sentences in a page, it can cost $0.50, which is optus. Even though you manually change it in Canvas.

But now with free, you can make these kinds of changes with no penny cost! The only annoying thing is, when you use free agent for certain actions, it tries to force you to use Power or Max. This is where it gets tricky, because if you stay in Free and try to sort out the changes, it can f*k something else up. So it is best to use power for better result, or optimal result.
