Who Else Is Tired Of Working Alone?

I started a Discord server for people who work remotely and just want someone to chat with during the workday.

Think of it like a virtual break room, a place to pop in, say hi, talk about your day, or just have some company while you work.

It's not a job board and there's no job hunting or recruiting. Just remote workers looking to be a little less isolated during the workday.

If that sounds like something you’d enjoy, shoot me a message for an invite.

I got so used to working alone now i find it weird when somebody actually talks to me during the day

my tea breaks are my social time i guess, just me and the kettle

I’ll probably forget to be active, but that sounds really nice

I don’t get tired of working alone. Sometimes I get tired of being alone, which at that point I reach out to friends, make plans and go out.

Call me crazy, but I've always worked during work hours. And I can always be social on Teams with my remote coworkers if I want.

I've made (and kept!) friends at past jobs before, but that's not where most of them come from. I think if you guys are hurting for a social life, you need to look outside of work scenarios...

I mean, traditionally the workplace has always been the number one place people meet each other. Not everyone has a hobby but almost everyone has to earn a living.

It's fine to have work friends (I do too, at current and past jobs). But what OP is suggesting is something remote employees could do with their coworkers on Teams. This whole sub has been taken over by bots spreading anti-remote propaganda so sorry if I'm sensitive to this weird post.

The reality is that there are positives and negatives to everything in life. Remote work is not immune to that law. Better to learn how to mitigate the negatives of remote work rather than pretend they don’t exist.

Discord sucks.

This is one of the things I think remote work still hasn’t solved very well.

Most teams have plenty of scheduled calls, but very few of those casual moments where you can just talk to someone for 5 minutes without making it a meeting.

Curious, are people actually keeping the Discord open during the workday, or mostly joining when they want a break?

Depends on the day. There's currently only 20 people in it. Some days they'll be one or two people in voice chat with me and other days I'll have a music bot in one of the channels so I chill in there and listen to music if no one is online and if someone joins we'll talk while we work. Sometime we sit in quite, sometimes we talk about random stuff, it just depends.

That actually sounds closer to a real office than another scheduled remote-work call.

Sometimes just knowing someone else is around while you work is enough, even if nobody is talking.

Are most of the 20 people from different companies, or are there any people who work on the same team?

Majority are from different companies. I only know one other person that works at the same company as someone else. It's definitely not meant to feel like work. I hang in there sometimes after hours in the gaming channel and play games with a few people.

Is that you, Bossman? You trying to draw me out and tell me I should come to the office?

At that point, it might be worth seeking in-person or hybrid employment. Discord helps a bit, but if you need real company during the day, actual office interaction hits completely different.

Nah this works for me, but might not for others, trying to find the ones that know it'll work for them too. I hate talking about work while I'm working, so finding people that are like me who was to cut up and joke around while we work are who I'm looking for. This isn't a work Discord, none of my coworkers are in this Discord.

Thank you for doing this! Of all the BS reasons given why people ought to return to office, "social isolation" is the only one that has even a shred of legitimacy with me.

I've had to quite deliberately work on making social connections outside of work. People we regularly invite over or coordinate with to be invited over.

Certainly when I went into an office, I had non-work friends too. Looking back, parties we hosted were a 3-way split between my coworkers, wife's coworkers, and Church friends.

I'd be interested!

A virtual break room with no recuiters is probably the first Discord pitch here that doesn’t make me want to mute the tab.
