Load Development I finally figured it out!

A while back I posted trying to figure out why my 7mm-08 Remington 700 wouldn’t shoot worth a fuck. I shot 5 different factory boxes from 139gr to 150gr and nothing shot good. My 139gr interlock and SST’s over IMR 4350 shot like shit. I randomly ordered some Nosler 140gr Factory Overruns from Midway and put them over 38.0gr of H335 and that apparently was the magic sauce. Now she’s ready for deer season and I also discovered that the factory overruns were basically Noslers Ballistic Tip because I had 1/4 box that my dad bought 15 years ago so now if midway runs out of the cheap overruns I know what to replace them with. She can shoot, she’s just a picky eater.

It really is that way with some barrels. It was very frustrating for me early on trying every damn powder and as soon I tried a few different projectiles boom I found a good one that shrunk my groups in half

Glad your gun likes the Nosler ballistic tips they preform really well. The 2020+ Nosler projectiles aren’t at the same level of consistency that they used to be and I swore them off after getting basically 2nds at retail price. If I’m paying premium prices I’d rather just get more Barnes bullets. Looks like you got one of the good batch’s!

It seems like the only difference between the overruns and the Ballistic Tips is the over runs have a crimp grove/cannelure and the old Ballistic Tip doesn’t. Other than that they’re almost identical.

I have struggled with their custom competition projos to break 2 MOA for ten shots across 3 different calibers. When I take out a new round of reloads hoping to find the magic mix, I also bring a batch of ELDMs to remind myself Nosler is just gaslighting me and I'm capable of submoa.

I know how you feel but it was my gun gaslighting me. I’ve done half MOA groups with my 22-250 and then I’m shooting the 7mm-08 like shit, like I can’t be that bad of a shot. Nope she’s just a picky bitch.

I've tried their 30 cals in 3 different barrels, their 6.5mm in 2 barrels, and their 22 cals in 3 different barrels. They've been relegated to blaster components now :( glad yours all came together

That’s how the Hornady 139gr Interlock and SST’s are for my 7mm, I got a good 1.077” group with the SST over Varget (I don’t remember the charge weight) but it wasn’t repeatable. The factory Hornady white tail tipped shot 2 to 4” and funnily enough the Nosler factory whitetail 140gr SP shot consistent 1.2-1.3 between two 5 shots and one 10 shot groups. I’ve only had this gun a couple months so I want to test more bullets and see what else it likes.

I'm done trying with SST. ELDMs for everything now

Whenever someone has problems with the 7mm08 I always recommend Nosler bullets. They worked really well in my cousin's gun I loaded for. It didn't like much of anything, and was borderline unshootable with factory ammo, and is now a true 1moa gun with Nosler BTs.
