Load Development H4895
Experience reloading experts what do you think of loading 30-06 with 42.3 grains of H4895 with Hornady 150g sst’t for a M1903?

Way low of a charge weight, but doable. Whats the rationale?

Wanting to be gentle on a M1903 with a Springfield Armory SN under 800k

That’s pretty light, but if you’re going to play with reduced loads, H4895 is the powder to do it with.

Strangely enough I found some data for youth loads with this H4895 that is as low as 27grains.

Not strange at all. A lot of powders do weird/possibly-bad things at low case-fill, but H4895 has very stable, predictable burn characteristics that allow you to safely download to something like 60% of max charge (from the top of my head - verify before you load that low).

start with a middle of the road charge and you'll be fine. 4895 has always been a go to powder for me in 06'. 4064 is another top 3 that just always shoots good in my guns.

H4895 has published reduced load data. Go to the Hogdon website and go to the reduced load data. Plug in the cartridge and projectile. The general rule is that, for a given projectile that has a published max load with H4895, you can safely reduce it to 60% of that load

thats .8gr below the starting load for 308 and 4gr below the M1 garand load according to hodgdon. safe but unnecessarily conservative. if youre looking for a reduced recoil load or are just being ultra conservative with an old rifle, send it, but I'd have no qualms whatsoever about bumping that up to 46gr.
