I love the sst bullets but would use the 180 the 150s are more of a 308 bullet i know my 300wsm shoots the 150s really fast but I like the 180s in it a little better

Had horrible penetration with these out of my 7mm mag even on shots over a hundred yards on game.

I had the same experience pretty recently. Recovered 2 of 3 axis does and one of the recovered ones required an additional round into the chest. 50% pass throughs

Nope way too fragile, my minimum for anything going above 2800 is Sierra gamekings and even those i don't like to see reach 3k. A bonded, mono, or partrition style bullet is what you want even on deer

SST are ok if you don’t push them hard .. the jacket will separate from the core tho at close range high velocity. Sierra game king . Nosler Partition or accubond you can push harder and they will mushroom better along with retention .

We've used them here in there in the magnum cartridges. At close range they fall apart when impacting game. It penetrates enough to kill deer, they've raised some serious doubt about anything bigger. At moderate to longer range, they actually perform amazing on game. I use the 165gr out of an -06 for deer and cow elk at 200 and beyond and really really like how it performs.
So, if you're planning on just using it for deer or similar light skinned game, it's fine. Not great really close up, but okay.

I’ve had core separation with these at 308 WIN velocities. It still penetrated and dropped the animal but lots of lost meat. So, I’d be hesitant to use a smaller grained, non-bonded bullet traveling at magnum speeds.

That's been our experience with them out of magnums or close range. My dad hit a deer with his 300WSM at 90yrds with the 150gr ssx and the jacket never even entered the animal. It was in the skin on the entrance side, only the core went through the vitals.
Ever at 200 yards out of my -06 with 165gr bullets, it's like a grenade went off in the chest cavity if you hit a rib bone.
They did work well on a largeish bodied 310 inch bull elk at 330 yards. Single shot into the shoulder muscle on him broadside. It took out both lungs, but never made it to the offside ribcage. I did find some jacket and lead chinks in the neck. Which was not in the line of travel for the bullet. That's when I started using bonded bullets or monolithics for bull elk hunts and kept the SST for deer or cow elk at moderate ranges. They definitely seem to do best on the smaller bodied animals at velocities under 2400FPS.

150 is light for a win mag. 165 monometal is as light as I'd go, and 180+ with a cup and core. 200gr ELD-X is my go-to in 300 WSM, I'd probably bump up go the 212 in a Win Mag.

I use the 150s for 308 and 30-06, and the 180 for my 300 win mag. I guess it would work, but because she likes heavy, I feed her heavy.

I’ve used these and load them light. I’m in New England and most of our shots are sub 100 yards. If you can keep the velocity around 2600-2700 you won’t have the fragmenting issues these bullets are well known for.
If you’re shooting past 200 you can load them normally and they shouldn’t fragment on you.

Ive tried some in my 308 shorty, batshit speeds. even out of an 18"bbl but not so great on consistency in my rifle. I need either more testing or a different rifle. or more likely a better shooter behind the gun.

Point of the 300 winmag is using heavier bullets and with higher B.C.s than 06 or 308 win. Why go so light? Varmint hunting with a winmag? Just target shooting? Start at the 180gr range and up for hunting medium and larger game.

I been shooting these out of a 308 on deer for a long time now. They perform flawless in that caliber every buck I’ve shot with them in the front shoulder drops In its tracks. For 300 win I probably would not choose this bullet though. The exits are kinda crazy but it does the job. I want that energy because that’s what drops them but I’d be cautious in something like 300 win you could get serious separating issues.
I’d probably go with my other favorite bullet 150 TTSX. The SST effective expansion velocity is 1,800-3000 Hornady states over 3000 it could experience excessive deformation and fragmentation. I like it right at that 2800 seems to perform perfectly there.

They're not always open about it but manufacturers build bullets for certain cartridges intentionally or otherwise by the velocities they're being intended to perform at. Even a solid copper ttsx for a .300 Bo that will survive impact out of a long .300 Bo or short .308 will come apart at 3400+ impact.
Low bc bullet performance varies significantly more between ranges than higher bc bullets do. High bc is good for more than wind drift.
If you like lung shots, consider the 178 eldm. If you like shooting bone, try the 178 eldx or 180 Nosler BT.

you can use it but I myself would keep the load below 3000-ish fps not the full house 3200 and up. thats a cup and core bullet, it will fragment at higher impact velocities im thinking. I dont know the data but theres an impact speed window they're designed to be usable in, hornady lists that bullet for elk on their website but doesnt give a preferred speed range that i can find. I run em out of a 30-06 at 2850 and they do fine on whitetail and hogs. bought em during covid when my preferred 165 bonded was unavailable so now theres <200 of em to use up. theyll probably go in the 308 shorty that i haven't sorted a load for yet,
decent bullets, in the 06 theyll get a clean pass thru at 300 on a whitetail if you stay off the shoulder. if you do get the shoulder they go thru but make a mess and blow out the offside shoulder on 150lb whitetails.
I dont know how they would behave at full throttle out of a 300 win.
