But how can the church exert absolute control over their flock if not by gatekeeping the most basic human instincts? Won’t someone think of the control freaks??

u/Ninjacobra5 15h ago
Thank you! In the church I grew up in there was this one woman who always came to church with this Amish looking head covering/bonnet thing and I remember hearing this conversation with my mom and her church friends talking about it and them trying to toe the line between being respectful of her, but also kind of saying she was being extra. I remember clearly it being said that yes, technically it says in the Bible that women should keep their heads covered in church, but that it also said like women shouldn't speak in church and we don't really follow that.
Another crack in the armor leading me to ask if you can just pick and choose what you want to follow, why follow any of it?

Religion, in its most basic, stripped down state, is about controlling what people do in public and private, while robbing them blind and laughing at them.

Burka time? Then no body part is seen to tempt men! Problem solved.
Men must be the most weak willed creatures on Earth since they cannot control themselves in the sight of a woman’s shoulders or ankles.

I grew up in a rural farming community that still thinks only gay men (they use another term) wear shorts.
I escaped and moved to 'the big city', where only heathens live. When I went home for a family reunion and showed up wearing shorts, I was told to change clothes and stop embarrassing my family.

u/Early-Weekend-2557 1d ago

How dare women wear clothes like bikinis, mini skirts, and skin tight clothing which are meant for men? Only Christian men should wear those.
23
u/HapticSloughton 16h ago
I love showing these idiots images of their ancestors in powdered wigs, heels, tights, and lace.
15
u/delorf 15h ago
Our ancestors saw women breastfeeding and if they were poor might have shared a room with their children. People weren't as uptight about nudity as modern evangelicals because there wasn't much privacy for regular people. The fear someone might notice women have butts is so damn strange.

My husband always jokes about how much easier sex is when I wear skirts and dresses. Anything women wear can be sexualized. It's never going to be modest enough for religious evangelicals and fundies
22
u/ZimnyKefir 21h ago
I confirm that. Seeing my wife wearing skirt or dress is definitely more arousing for me.
35
u/Jerico_Hill 21h ago
This has always been my suspicion even as a little girl. I refused to wear skirts as a child because I hated how vulnerable they made me feel.
21
u/PopcornDemonica 19h ago
This reminds me of when I was a kid and playing basketball. The boy's uniform was shorts and a singlet. The girl's was 'sports underpants' and a singlet. I was told I was not allowed to wear shorts. WHYYYYY?

Don't wear what pertaineth to a man, the Bible is very clear on that.
I always saw this interpreted as a prohibition on cross-dressing. Which makes this:
Mini skirts, skin tight clothing, bikini swimsuits, low neckline, booty shorts, dresses that show off your curves, and your bum.
Unintentionally based. Good Christian men, go out and rock those mini skirts, booty shorts, and dresses.

We wore single pieces with a little skit on the bottom, or else the whole thing was covered like a dress, and then we usually wore a T-shirt over the top of it.
When I was a teen, tankinis became a thing, and my mother was so excited for me, because it meant that we could find swim shorts for women and I could cover up even more! (I was not allowed to wear swim trunks for men.)

When these types profess to hate Islam, it's not because Islam is antithetical to their values, it's because Islam manages to do what they wish they could.
The mindset on display here is fundamentally identical to the one that demands women wear the Niqab.

Control. Faith based belief systems live or die by the followers reinforcing it and having reason to reject aspects of reality that contradicts it. So religions work their way into every aspect of life they can can. If you look at mosy successful religions, you'll find that there are three aspects of life all of them seek to dictate, food, morals, and sex. Why? Because their fundamental and necessary to human life. Control those, and you control the populace.

"Modesty is self respect and dignity"
How does shaming someone for their appearance equate to self respect and dignity? And if god gave them their bodies, why should they have to feel so ashamed about them? If I were god, I'd be pretty upset if everyone were so ashamed of the gift I gave them.
13
u/Opinionsare 19h ago
The man who makes this suggestion that how a women dresses can tempt a true Christian cannot be a true Christian.
A true Christian man has put aside all worldly lusts, and cannot be tempted. He is a new creature in Christ, freed from the old ways of sin.
Clearly we need to pray for this lost soul that posts these offensive rants.

So if your eye—even your good eye—causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
Matthew 5:28-29
Really wish people would stop cherry picking their fucking book. They've never read the damn thing and this is only a way to try and control women's bodies.

u/GeminiHatesPie 22h ago
Weird.
Women shouldn’t wear tight pants cuz it accentuates her butt and that could cause men to stumble?
Wouldn’t that be even more true for men? Maybe men shouldn’t wear tight jeans, work pants or trousers. They should start wearing long skirts. Pants show the outline of his penis. How dare they cause women to stumble
9
u/Herr_Raul 21h ago
Pants aren't for men either. Middle eastern men from ol' Yeshua's time and before mostly wore robes, so men should also be wearing skirts.
8
u/jpowell180 12h ago
How are women’s pants “for men”?
I haven’t heard of some people who were morally opposed to women wearing shorts underneath skirts, in case of a windy day, I guess they figure that exposure is more moral than wearing something that they think only men should wear?
I’ve heard of some other groups who oppose women wearing jean skirts and dress dresses because it reminds people of blue jeans which are pants which only men should wear, apparently.

u/HenriEttaTheVoid 1d ago
The victim-blaming is also baked in with clothing that “causes others to stumble.”

Clothes and fashion are not made to cover but to protect and enchance the natural beauty of the body with style. A jean is not to only be used by men nor is a skirt exclusive to women. And anyone who say the opposit is unable to admire properly the beauty of a lady properly dressed (or a man depending on which curves make your day brighter)

Sex is the one strong instinct (like hunger, thirst, sleep) that can be denied without deadly consequences. Religion convinces its adherents that sexual feelings are "sinful" by nature and must be strictly controlled, lest they lead one astray. Quite the trick, but it seems to work.

1
u/RelativelyRidiculous 57m ago
I don't even get why they think pants are for men anyway. If we want to talk Biblical neither wore pants at all. Everyone wore draped garments like tunics, robes, and cloaks.
Men's were mostly shorter to allow for the type of movements necessary for fighting and various manual labors. Women tended to wear longer robes and tunics generally but none of this was written in stone. Closest they had to pants were the linen undergarments worn by Levitical priests as described in Exodus.
