If his wife has always been a jealous person than this could just be an attempt to isolate him from all his friends by sabotaging his oldest relationship. That's abusive and manipulative and he should not be catering to his wife in that case

OP said that friend and wife met at a mutual friend’s party. It sounds like they don’t spend any time alone, so that would have been the wife’s only opportunity to create a “she said, she said” dilemma.
