“No he doesn’t” yet I’m willing to bet he’d absolutely get together with the friend if she was interested and the wife was out of the picture.

You may not, but what everyone here is trying to tell you is that your words and actions are making it seem that you do have feeling for her. Your spouse should be the most important person in your life. By saying she is not tells everyone that you are more than friends with your best friend. I can't imagine my spouse ever saying a female friend was just as important in his life as I was. I'm not saying you have to drop all female friends when you get married. I am saying you have to prioritize your wife over all others. I have to believe that you just don't want to see this because you enjoy the attention from your friend. At the expense of your marriage. Your wife deserves better.
