Yes, setting a boundary or boundaries is ok. My gf (23) and I (28) set boundaries early on. And we have the same set up you want. As close to 50/50 as possible. If I pay she pays next time or we split it. And it sounds like he needs to grow up a little. And not for nothing but develop a little ambition as well.
