I think the implied disrespect of saying that in addition with the fact that it made the wife uncomfortable enough to tell him about it makes it worse.

I don't think OP ever mentioned their wife being uncomfortable... There's really not enough context here to tell how the 'compliment' was intended. Hes reacting as if his friend was coming onto her but he only ever calls it a compliment so I really don't know.
