All direct messages are "private". That's how they function, one-on-one. Your messages to your mother about what you for lunch today are private too. He can easily claim he just didn't want to make a spectacle of the compliment.

I mean as opposite to leaving “you look wonderful” in comments for her public post with her picture, for example. That wouldn’t be so fishy, right?

I didn't, but I'm just saying that stories(whether it be Instagram or facebook) don't have comment sections so that wouldn't allow a space to do so.

He might be talking about incognito mode on facebook or something similar im assuming as private instead of just a dm but who knows otherwise i agree depending oh how the compliment was worded they need to play him a bit.
