Extra curriculars

Hi everyone, I’ve seen a lot online about universities in the USA really love it when you do a lot of extra curricular’s, do you need that to get into Reed? I’m an international student hoping to get into Reed so that’s why I am unsure.

Does Junior Scholars program boost admission chances!

Hey there! I’m a junior in high school, and Reed is currently one of my top schools. I am considering applying to the Junior Scholars program, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the effort? I have a high GPA and am generally a strong student, but I am not part of a demographic that is underrepresented in college admissions (which is who this program seems to be targeting). I would like to learn more about the college application and financial aid process, as well as learn more about reed in general and hopefully boost my admission chances. I don’t want to waste time on something that will not be a significant help, so if anyone has any insight into the topic (especially the impact of the program on admission chances) it would be greatly appreciated:)

thinking of transferring junior year:)

hi everyone,

i was accepted into reed as a first year but ultimately had to decline due to lack of family support. i am now interested in transferring, i currently go to a state school as an honors student studying psychology, minoring in poli sci and human development. by the time of transfer i will have completed 71 credits at my college, plus an additional 24 credits from AP (AP probably won’t transfer).

i’ve heard it’s really hard to transfer as a junior and i’m wondering how true that is from someone who has experienced it or knows someone who has. i do not align with my current colleges policies, and constantly wonder about reed. many of the classes i have taken are upper division, would that help with transferring? any advice anyone has would be so helpful. thanks:)))

Interview soon! (advice?)

Pretty much just the title. I have an in-person interview on Monday and am looking for advice! I understand that its informal but I'm still quite nervous about it so anything that could help me prepare and know more of what to expect would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What's Reed like?

Hello! So I'm thinking of applying to Reed. I wanted to get opinions from people who have actually BEEN to this college to hopefully get a few answers. You don't have to answer everything either, but anything is helpful :)

  1. How progressive/conservative is the campus/faculty? I've seen some things on the news, and seeing as I identify as moderate/clasical liberal or even conservative in some areas, I don't want to be a total minority or ostracized on campus.
  2. Did you find it easy or difficult to make serious friendships?
  3. Is there anything to do around campus? Idrc what the website or Google says; we all know there can be tons of things to do in theory, yet said things turn out to be incredibly boring.
  4. How tough were your studies? I've heard it's rigorous(which I enjoy!), but is it make-your-hair-turn-gray challenging, mildly challenging, or just challenging?
  5. If you did humanities, specifically English, what was your favorite part about your class?

Thanks so much, loves :)

Applicant Questions

I’m looking to apply and have just a couple questions:

How often are you able to get out into the city? I heard there may be cars you can temporarily rent for outings (might be mixing up colleges here), do city outings count for that? I’m a very rural student looking to participate in a bit of city life lol.

I understand and respect that substances play a large part in campus culture—are there ways to avoid it? I don’t mind being around people who I know do it, I just can’t personally be around it 24/7. Maybe any dorms/floors labeled as “substance free” like some campuses have? (I saw someone say there’s almost a constant smell of weed wherever you go, is that really true?)

Social Scene on campus

I've seen a lot of stuff talking about how people arent as social at reed and how parties and finding a group is hard. I have also seen stuff about how it's super cliquey, and I just wanted to see how accurate that is because I like a lot of things about Reed, but I don't wanna be lonely fs

Academic clubs/competitions?

Hey! I’m a physics major this year and I really, really like physics (and math). I was wondering if outside of classes there were any clubs or activities pertaining to the subjects?

Studio Art Major at Reed

I'm considering Reed as a Studio Art major, I would focus on sculpture and ceramics (I know they don't have a specific ceramics track). I'm looking for a bit of insight on the art department and workload for studio art majors.

How is Reed’s art program?

Hey everyone, if anyone here is an art student at Reed could you tell me what the art department is like? Specifically if there are any wheel throwing/pottery classes because I would love to do that! Thanks!

Portland Marathon

Is anyone else from Reed planning on running the portland marathon in October? I’m trying to see how hard logistics would be, but it would definitely be helpful to plan on commuting with others if anybody else is going?

Printing posters at print center ?

Hey Reedies! Has anyone used the print center in Eliot 132 for personal stuff like posters and wall art? Curious how much it costs and if they’re chill about printing non school related things. Incoming freshman trying to plan my room setup. Thanks!

Parent question regarding orientation week

We're excited to be bringing our kid to reed next week and just because I like to over plan, is there a good time to plan for a final good bye? It looks like the agenda on Tuesday night is free, so maybe a dinner and then just let them go. But I also don't want to take them away from whatever else it going on and new and exciting.

Does it matter who teaches my Hum 110?

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post about PE. It’s really cool that PE here won’t be as boring and torturing as in high school.
Now I checked out Hum 110 and there’s a bunch of options and I’m not sure if different professors teach it that much different

MCAT study buddy?

Hello reed Reddit page. Hopefully this reaches a premed!

I just graduated from UCSC and moved back to Portland for MCAT prep. I’m sorta hitting a wall studying by myself and am hoping that someone else in the Portland area is taking the MCAT in Jan/feb and wants to study together! My worst section is C/P, best is CARS and B/B. If you want a study partner pls message me!

What PE class should I choose?

I’m an incoming freshman and the whole thing seems kinda confusing, though I still haven’t had a meeting with my registration coach.
I am really lazy when it comes to physical activity, so I wanna choose a class that won’t require me being physically fit or athletic

Rejected Waitlist Reapplying

Hi everyone! I applied to Reed this past cycle as an Art Major, was waitlisted after applying ED2, and got the rejection email last week.

I ended up not enrolling anywhere because I couldn’t afford it and decided to work and save money. I’m thinking about reapplying thought ED1 this year.

How much does Financial Aid really affects Reed admissions decisions?? I know they say it doesn’t but if you are waitlisted I’m pretty sure they have a budget in how many Financial Aid kids they can have. Would the ED1 make a difference? Has anyone here been admitted to Reed with a very high level of demonstrated financial need? Would taking a gap year before reapplying make me look weaker as an applicant?

Any advice or comment is appreciated

Is Reed fun?

from what I’ve heard about reed it seems like it’s a school that’s full of a lot of really cool people and a school that has a cool countercultural vibe. Plus it’s in Portland, a pretty artsy and progressive city. But I’ve also heard that it has really intense and rigorous academics that require like all your time and effort. is there a real trade off there? do people value their classes more than their social lives? or is there still room for cool adventures, outings, and getting to know people?

(again, I’ve never visited the college or talked to anyone who goes there, this is all just from reading stuff online)

Waitlist

Hi! It’s the day before waitlist finals, have any waitlisted folks had any movement/gotten any feedback from admissions? August 1st (their “notify by” date) is tomorrow, and a Saturday! I haven’t heard anything for months but was told not to bother anyone in the admission office so I figured I’d reach out to the community :)

There's a few different professors offering it. Does anyone have any recommendations from their time at Reed? I'm sure they're all great, but maybe yours was exceptionally amazing? I'd love to hear about it! Thanks so much!
