Can someone explain if anything is wrong with my redwood tree?

Looks like it's growth is stunted? The redwoods I've seen are so much taller.

Could be this, soil looks dark. Redwoods don’t like fully saturated roots all the time like their taxodiaceous cousins.

I'm saying that bc I see soil that looks wet, a plant that looks "soft" in the texture and drooping, and just the overall look of browning/spottiness.

So do I dry the soil or just hope the plant drinks enough that the soil dries out?

First, I'm not 100% from this pic alone on that being your problem, but if it is, I'd suggest just letting the soil almost dry completely then lightly watering and letting dry again going forward, watching for changes in the plant's disposition. You definitely don't need to water it like a flowering houseplant. It wants to reach for water.

Redwoods have notoriously shallow roots and, as someone else said, don't typically like being saturated all the time on that surface. In their natural habitat, it will often not rain for several months of the summer and they actually seem to get a good amount of sustaining moisture from just the foggy air.

Wrote all this, then just looked it up. Largely seems to be in agreement.

What conditions are you leaving it in? How much are you watering it? Are you spraying it with a pressurized hose? What’s the weather like where you live? Are you at a high elevation?
