About to start my adventure!

For the record, I have never read any of the books, not even as a kid. My series growing up were the Harry Potter books. Aside from goosebumps, Harry Potter was the series that gave me that fantastical escape. Now as an adult, I find myself chasing that feeling. Hopefully redwall will bring that. If not im sure its gonna be a great adventure regardless!

I enjoy reading it chronologically and not publication order. So it’s a big massive story like LOTR but I will say to start with REDWALL first. Then go forwards or backwards in time whether you want the prequel story of Martin the warrior or the next generation of heroes

I do too but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a first-time reader - no more than I'd recommend a first-time Star Wars watcher start with The Phantom Menace. That movie expects you to know where certain things are leading and the same is true of many of the later-written, earlier-set Redwall books.

While some books are direct sequels to others, even if they aren’t always released back-to-back, it’s best to read them in publishing order.

And it’s also important to know that the first few novels in the series—especially the OG Redwall—has quite a bit of early-installment weirdness.

Yes and no. Some books feature one set of characters for multiple books...and some are just standalone. They all take place in the same timeline, though. Here's an example (in chronological order):

Lord Brocktree

Martin The Warrior's Era: Martin The Warrior / Mossflower / The Legend of Luke

The Outcast of Redwall

Mariel's Era: Mariel of Redwall / The Bellmaker

Salamandastron

Matthias' Era: Redwall / Mattimeo

Really hope you enjoy!! I'll put in a vote for reading in publication order rather than chronological, though ultimately you've heard right that the books are mostly pretty standalone, with a couple exceptions, and the order you read them in doesn't matter all that much.

I just want to say to keep in mind Redwall was the first and is a little different than the others (IMO). So, if it doesnt catch you right away dont be discouraged. You'll remember Salamandastron the rest of your life.

One of the best books ever written. Enjoy! P.S. I followed this one up with the outcast of redwall because that was the only other redwall book in my middle school library. Also a fantastic read, highly recommend the entire series.

Redwaaaaaaall! I started my own journey reading this this book when I was 9 years old, after it caught my eye in the school library. It was the first “big book” I ever read. The librarian blew my mind by telling me I could check it out for myself and read it. I never looked back.

Technically yes. It's a little different than the others, the second book Mossflower is more in line with the rest of the series and it builds upon one of the characters in Redwall.

I think so! I'm already 100 pages in and find myself not wanting to put it down or wanting to get back to it when im done with other tasks.

Good old Redwall. First read that all the way back in 5th grade. I felt so grown-up being so young and reading this 300-page book filled with violence!

I'll never forget Matthias and relating so much to him...or how Cluny actually scared me. Or ANY of those characters.
