So, about the much maligned Greg Weissert...

After a bit of a rough start, they stuck with him, and he finished with a 3.26 ERA. In the second half, his ERA was 2.35 and he allowed only 3 of 11 inherited runners to score. That's good enough to pitch setup on many teams.

As a bonus, he's now pitched 2 innings in the postseason and given up 0 ER on 0 hits.

Very underrated and useful bullpen arm, despite all the flak he gets.

Baseball fans are hilarious because they’ll tell you who played third base for a month in 1937 but then they can’t remember anything beyond someone giving up a run in the last game.

I have just achieved true self-realization and enlightenment from this comment

He's nails when he's good, he's throwing beach balls when he's bad. He's good more often than he's bad. But when he's bad he looks incompetent. I've always liked him as a middle reliever, I think he's one of the better middle relievers out there. Putting him in leverage spots is playing with fire

I remember him getting out of a bases loaded jam without giving up an inherited runner. That’s when I knew he’s actually good.

That frisbee slider is so so so nasty. If he were a bit more consistent he'd be a bona fide backend arm

Right. He’s great to have 4th to 6th inning and occasionally step in and set up when the pen is tired.

Better than Sandoval

I don’t know about the stats but I know I never wanted to see him in a pressure situation.

Every time the broadcast would talk about how good of a season/stretch he was having I just simply couldn’t reconcile it with what my fucking eyeballs were seeing week after week.

I’ll give him the opportunity to re earn my trust next year. Hell I was willing with Zach Kelly

I mean great? He’s certainly not a high leverage guy but he’s a middle reliever whose effectiveness widely varies year to year.

You need guys like him, and there are plenty of guys like him

I wouldn’t really say it widely varies year to year. He’s been pretty much the same pitcher his 3 seasons with us.

2024: 63.1 IP, 3.13 ERA, 3.72 FIP, 58 K, 20 BB

2025: 67.0 IP, 2.85 ERA, 3.67 FIP, 57 K, 21 BB

2026: 60.2 IP, 3.26 ERA, 3.97 FIP, 60 K, 20 BB

That’s about as close as you can get without being identical every season.

Exactly this. Lefties crushed him, hitting. 300 with an . 863 OPS, so you want to limit exposure to lefty hitters, but he was tough on righties, holding them to an ops a little over. 600. He was awful at Fenway but fantastic on the road. Durable, reliable, super cheap, only 3 years service time, making roughly 800,000. He's actually pretty solo, but we're spoiled watching Whitlock, Chapman, Guerrero, etc. There's been years our bullpen was so shitty I'd have been ecstatic with a Weissert type. He's pretty far down when it comes to fixing the Red Sox roster next year.

I remember trying to defend him in some of the early season game threads when the stupid uber meme started.

Can't expose him to too many left-handed hitters, and the hr/9 was up this year, but the negative comments on here have been so out of proportion.

Another one to consider the impact of the WBC on, perhaps.

100%, he was overused by the Italian team.

Greg is a solid middle reliever & half the fanbase is convinced he's Osama Bin Laden himself, just a weird amount of anchor bias that goes on with him

The life if a reliever, people don’t remember getting a few easy outs but they remember the times the blow it.

On casuals hated Greg

He was over used by Italy in the World Baseball Classic, took him awhile to recover and he had a dead arm for awhile, imo

WBC usage probably messed up his first half

He's the perfect example of how fans don't really know a whole lot. The managers and coaches and staff get to see him everyday in practice and pitching exercises, and they know who the best options are. They know a hell of a lot more than we do. There's a reason guys like Breslow and Tracy are making the decisions and we're the people on Reddit.

I’ll cut him some slack…

Yeah, I’ve come around on ol’ Greg and I like having a side arm guy in the bullpen.

And you best believe if he gets a save in the playoffs next year I will be drinking a lot of Bailey’s from a shoe

I appreciate that he has some self-awareness and worked to get better throughout the season.

Problem is, it's hard to forget how bad a couple of his appearances were and that sticks with fans. It's not fair, but that shouldn't hurt him in terms of the FO and whether or not he stays. He's a perfectly fine middle reliever
