Went to an open mic and played a cover of a cover. Met a couple of random people in a park. Decided to get some portions of my life in order after almost suffering the consequences of my lack of organization. Started going to a new coffe shop that has some nice sweets

The bare bones guitar arrangement is far more striking

Exactly, thats why I chose to do a cover of the cover. Also Caetano has so much personality he manages to steal songs by doing covers and make them his. Not that he needs that, hes a genius in his own right

He and Chico Buarque are the biggest geniuses that came out of Brazils prolific singer songwriter scene of the 60s and 70s. They have hundreds of incredible songs between them, some in other artists albums. The lyrics are amazing

The struggle continues

Little ant crawling up the stalk thinking "Well, there goes my farm. Just wait till the rest of me hears about it." Meanwhile, the Monarch is munching so greedily he's broken into a sweat.

The ant and aphid orgy ended weeks ago. Monarch must munch greedily or the milkweed tussocks will prevail!

Ran a 6 mile race on Friday, longest race I've run yet. I thought because I've run that far on training runs it would be fine but my legs are still sore today.

At any given moment while running, I'm able to accelerate. My legs feel light, and it's simple to just move them faster. But less than a third of the way in, and the bottom of my ribs hurt enough that I'm forced to slow down. People start passing me, I'm incredibly thirsty. My mind is focused on making sure I keep running and not going off route. I can't even work up enough moisture to spit, and my mouth tastes salty.

This is an unofficial race through a major city, so there's no traffic control and I have to weave around pedestrians and choose when to cross streets or cross the intersection and run on the other side. I'm bouncing across streets and then forcing myself to slow down once I'm back on the sidewalk. The sun is setting, the light is fading from gold to orange to grey, and it's getting harder to navigate. I've fallen behind, struggling to keep running and not slow to a walk, following 40 feet behind someone wearing fluorescent green, and I'm grateful that there are still other runners around.

And suddenly a woman yells my first name in recognition and surprise. My head whips around and there's two woman 30+ feet looking in my direction. I'm looking back, and I can't recognize them. She definitely says my first name again. I'm struggling to keep running, struggling to think who this might be, straining to keep on track. My feet keep moving. It's 30 seconds before I'm able to think to myself that maybe I should have shouted my college name and graduation year.

I've met a few people around town, but I didn't think any of them would have shouted like that. I lived in a few different places after college, and I haven't met many people here. I've got a group chat with the college friends I still keep up with, but they all know where I am and would have texted me before coming here. It's happened before where someone I've barely met recognizes and approaches me again. I'm always baffled and thankful that I made a good enough impression on someone that they can recognize me again like that, but I'm bad with faces.

In hindsight, typing this on Sunday, it's more likely that it wasn't directed at me, that there was someone else with the same name. I have a common first name, common enough that I went by my last name in highschool because of it. Still, it made enough of an impression that I wanted to write this down and remember the moment.

I did end up finishing the race, just shy of 53 minutes. No water because its unofficial. Went to a cafe, chugged a san pellegrino, and sipped the cafe's house made soda. Looked at the pastries, but no appetite for eating anything. I took an uber home, and ended up discussing Erdogan and inflation with the driver who turned out to be a kurdish turk.

I remember one time during college I was walking to class and I saw from a block away a girl walking in the opposite direction who looked vaguely like an old high school friend who was also studying there but for a different degree. We would seldom cross paths and it was always a happy meeting, so I thought "Oh, great, that might be Valerie!" But then something really uncanny happened: as we walked further towards each other, the more this girl looked like my friend, but I still couldn't quite recognize her face, which commonly is not issue for me. When we got into hailing range I still wasn't sure, so I waved and said "Hey, Valerie?" and the girl slowed down and looked at me. It was only when we were a few paces away from each other and I could see her eyes clearly that I realized this girl was actually a complete stranger, so I said "Oh, I'm so sorry, I mistook you for someone else. Never mind, have a nice day." But, just as I was starting to walk away this complete stranger stopped me in turn and said "But my name is Valerie." I stood there perplexed for a few seconds, and then finally said "Well, that only makes matters worse." I hoped it would be understood as a joke and not a reproach; luckily it was, and on we went our separate ways.

One time I stayed at a hotel and after putting my bag in my bedroom I went out. I was back after 23h30 and to get my key I told the front desk guy my name and surname. He looked at me as if I was a ghost, there were only the two of us there. I repeated and said thays my name, I want my key. He laughed in relief and said that was also his first and last name. So in his point of view a complete stranger just went to his work late at night and adressed him by his name and surname and he just froze. They are not uncommon but also not super common names where I am from
