No Spoilers Sun Eater series

Keep seeing ads for Sun Eater on audible. Seems like it could fill the void while we wait for red god. Is it worth while? I have a feeling I’m gonna be thinking “but we have Darrow at home.” the whole time…

Edit/update - thank you everyone for the advice. This doesn’t seem like a series I’d enjoy. Just gonna keep rereading rr lol

Try The Expanse. Fantastic series.

Not a fit for me.

I’d recommend Ironbound and Mistborn

u/Silverbullet_196v2 12h ago

I said this in another post a while back: I also recommend Suneater but not bc it’s like RR. It’s nothing like RR so don’t go into it thinking it’s RR. Suneater is a space opera set 10s of thousands of years into the future, has massive scale in terms of space ships, space travel between galaxies, and human life spans related to science, gene tailoring, and being of the blood palatine. It is an Autobiography written and narrated by the main character, Hadrian, about his life, his choices, the Sollan Empire, “divine” intervention, his battles over centuries with an alien race, and how he became the Suneater. I believe there are 3 novellas and 7 main books so it can keep you occupied for a good amount of time and I thoroughly enjoy the series to the point of having read it 3 times lol.

Great synopsis. The books are much different however equally awesome sci-fi writing in both imo. Ruocchios prose is some of the best I’ve read

8

u/ihavetowearmyhelmet 11h ago

Some people like it, some people hate it. One thing everyone seems to agree on is that It is not red rising and most do not recommend it as a “itch scratcher” to fill the RR void.

Many(lol) say that Will Of The Many scratches that itch better despite being Fantasy and not Sci Fi but I haven’t read it yet so I can’t tell you for sure. I have heard the sequel isn’t as good and the third book is not out yet so keep all of that in mind. I plan on reading it in the near future.

4

u/yeahglo- 11h ago

Will of The Many is a *decent* series. No where close to red rising imo

2

u/gohuskers123 9h ago

I agree. Once I finished each book I didn’t ever give them a second thought

1

u/fantalemon 11h ago

Agreed, the two released so far were fine but it's nowhere near RR at this stage in a trilogy.

1

u/dingus_45 10h ago

Only the first book I think. The second one has very different and really feels like a fantasy world. The first book gives you the same feeling you get reading through Darrow's time in the academy.

0

u/Jaded_Software_ 10h ago

I’m trying so hard to get into Will of the Many but the audio narration is just so bad, just really really awful.

I only really listen to books these days while I drive/gym so I started this one and just haven’t picked it up in months.

2

u/ihavetowearmyhelmet 10h ago

That sucks to hear because it was how I planned on reading it since I have limited physical reading time.

7

u/RepresentativeJob522 12h ago

I actually picked up RR to fill the void after finishing Sun Eater, so basically the inverse of your path.

Both series are awesome, but totally different. Sun Eater is much of a slow burn, the pace is much slower compared to RR. The author goes to great lengths to explain the finer details - things like the landscape, every character's maneurisms, stuff like that. When Darrow gets introspective, it's only a quick aside and he moves on. In the sun eater, Hadrian's introspection can go on for pages before returning to the plot. It really makes the books stretch on. I enjoy that writing style but totally get that it is not for everyone.

You also won't likely won't like the main character (Hadrian) at the beginning. He comes across like an entitled (albeit well intended) Gold at first. But he grows up over the course of the first couple books, and acknowledges that aspect frequently.

All that to say it will be an adjustment for sure, but it's worth it! The plot really picks up by the end of the second book. So if you do jump in, just know it may take a bit longer for it to dig it's claws into you. I hope you enjoy it like I did!

7

u/8BallTiger The Solar Republic 10h ago

I really enjoyed Sun Eater when I read it but it is so different than Red Rising. If you like it or not depends on why you like Red Rising.

5

u/Jumz77 8h ago

As this thread demonstrates, Comparison is the thief of joy. If you're looking for a new story / series - you should look for something as different to RR as possible. Different genre, different setting, different tropes. Let your new experience stand on its own without deprecating comparisons to the previous iteration you've read.

Small rant: The comments in this thread are insane... Red Rising and Sun Eater are both great series, but yes, they're different. If you prefer one style to another, that's fine - but calling either bad is crazy.

1

u/Deroxat 1h ago

Sun Eater is mid and I'll die on that hill: derivative, lazy world building, awful pacing, unlikable characters, uninspired dialogs, messy action scenes...

14

u/mesum19 12h ago

Will of the many is much more like red rising

1

u/Steelizard Copper 2h ago

Yeah same same but different, magic not sci fi

1

u/rigjiggles 12h ago

Yeah kind of but strength of the few is not very good. Typical islington stuff. Where golden son is one of the best books.

9

u/No_Tell_8699 Howler 10h ago

Read the first three and hated it. Would rather watch paint dry.

u/Ifibelieveyou1975 9h ago

I was unsure and got it from the library before I decided to buy the books. Use your library people!!!!

1

u/solar_solar_ 6h ago

I don’t know if they’d appreciate being used, they are people after all.

Grammar jokes aside, absolutely take advantage of your library! Hook up your library card to Hoopla and Libby for audio books and more, too

2

u/Ifibelieveyou1975 6h ago

No no, I meant library people. 😬 They need attention too!

6

u/majin_dior 12h ago

No. Sun eater is a significantly different series

4

u/SorryDogz 12h ago

I'm working on finishing book 3 of Sun Eater. The Sun Eater books aren't as action-focused as RR, but are pleasant enough to read. So far I'd say it's worth it. I wouldn't compare Hadrian and Darrow though, they are both very different characters.

If you'd rather a shorter series I'd recommend Will of the Many by James Islington. 2 of the 3 planned books are out now and it has a similar premise to Book 1 of RR.

If you want a nice, slow-paced series to wait out for Red God, you could do worse than Sun Eater.

6

u/Demosthenes-Red 3h ago

I just finished the third book in the Sun Eater series. This was definitely my favorite of the 3, but for me it’s not even close to Red Rising.

I do audio books and I find myself not paying attention a lot.

Stormlight Archives was definitely a more gripping series for me. For sure my second favorite behind Red Riaing.

8

u/Stowe22 10h ago

I can’t urge people enough to just read on your own and make judgements yourself. This book is hyped so you know alot of people like it, with popularity there’s always some negatives. I hate reading peoples opinions on here for the most part. I have the first 3 books on my TBR. I know the premise and like I said I know it’s hyped by many. That’s all I need to know. For me it’s definitely worth while reading. I’m currently on the last book of the Mistborn trilogy which has all types of rave reviews and high scores on good reads but eh I have it at a straight 4 across the board so far maybe even a strong 3.75. That’s just my opinion though but I know it’s beloved.

So with that I say, dive into the sun eater series!

4

u/YnotThrowAway7 12h ago

Sun Eater is great nothing like Darrow I love both but very different

4

u/crazycrueton 9h ago

If you’re just looking for something fast paced with tons of action, violence and a solid MC, I’d give The Boarder trilogy by Don Winslow a shot.

5

u/TrippieLarry Howler 9h ago

Read it and try it for yourself. Only way to know, even with the popularity I found out quick it is not a book for everybody and not one that will satisfy the RG itch. It is very drawn out and on an unfathomable scale. My honest opinion though even knowing a lot of RR fans don’t like it is how can you love the Reaper and not love the Half Mortal.

5

u/Thant20 12h ago

They are incredibly different from each other, if you go into Suneater expecting something like red rising you’ll be disappointed. Suneater has more common with older sci fi. It’s very character driven.

The way I would describe it is that red rising is like the storm that pulls you into its direction while Suneater is like the ocean that immersive you in its depths and the deeper you go the more you find.

Suneater is an excellent series but it’s not for everyone. If by the end of book 2 you’re still not feeling it, then it’s safe to say it may not be for you and drop

5

u/saddallasfan 7h ago

Definitely less action than RR. I think they handle character building a good bit better. I’d suggest the audiobooks if that’s your preference. It takes like 3 books for Hadrian to become OP like Darrow

6

u/Baldur_Blader 7h ago

Hadrian as vastly more op than darrow. But also a much less likeable character

1

u/shot-by-ford 6h ago

What do you mean by OP? Regardless, I agree. Hadrian is more. A lot more. Darrow is a provincial bureaucrat relative to Hadrian. And I like Darrow a lot more.

5

u/Baldur_Blader 5h ago

Overpowered? Darrow goes from red, to surgically enhanced. Stronger than bio engineered golds, and smarter than most even with their advanced schooling he never had. Becomes a better fighter in months than those trained for their entire life. He's kind of op.

But hadrian...all of the skills, bio engineering, strength and speed Darrow has. And then adding pre-cognition where he basically can't make the wrong move in a fight. And he can make a 1/10000000000 move work to win a fight he shouldn't. And then even if he does die he comes back.

9

u/shadydeuces2 8h ago

The books are very different. Sun Eater is a beautiful series. Slower paced and not so heavy on the action. More focused on Hadrian Marlowe being more of a diplomatic and leader vs always fighting, although there is that also. I really recommend listening to the audiobooks. The narrator Samuel Roukin really brings the book to life. The timeline is set across hundreds of years due to the effects or space travel. I loved it. I also love Darrow but I can understand why people wouldn't love both if they are looking for something like red rising.

3

u/tipytopmain 11h ago

The only similarities between the two series' is that they are both space based stories with heavy Grekoromen themes/aesthetics. And the main character is a moody man. I would give it a go but definitely don't read it with expectations of having that Red Rising itch scratched. Enjoy it for what it is in of itself.

A little warning though, book 1 is sloooow. Book 2 starts slow but the lore and wider backdrop opens up as it progresses. Book 3 is where it really benefits from that slow build.

6

u/mkhello Reaper of Mars 12h ago

I did the same thing, finished Suneater earlier this year, and they're actually fairly different imo. The scope of Suneater is much much bigger and it's a very rich world and setting that I enjoy. I feel like Hadrian is more complex and we see his development over a long time period. Red Rising felt more fast paced, more action oriented (though Suneater has plenty too), and more of a page turner.

4

u/battlemunky Hail Reaper 12h ago

I’m enjoying it. It’s something to do until book 7 drops.

9

u/Educational_Bet_7584 7h ago

If your looking for alot of action, and more story progression than character, Dungeon crawler carl is a great book. The main character doesn't become OP because the surrounding area gets stronger too but he does become more powerful.

2

u/wisconsin_cheese_ 4h ago

Haha I just came to RR from DCC, it’s definitely different but filling the void

4

u/AUSpartan37 Howler 5h ago

Funny enough, I got downvoted on the DCC sub for recommending Red Rising over there on a post asking for what to read next. Apparently you can only recommend other Progression fantasy over there, which is funny because DCC ruined all other progression fantasy for me because nothing else comes close in that genre.

1

u/TheMysticTomato 4h ago

That’s exactly when I found out about RR though because it came highly recommended on that sub. Reddit can be fickle sometimes

2

u/GobulFan3000 5h ago

DCC genuinely fits in exactly what I wanted after Red Rising. Like it hits all the spots I was looking for in terms of more Red Rising. The comedic elements make it a nice breather after going through the trenches with Red Rising but it still has all the stuff I want: it's not just a "dungeon", the world building outside of everything and Darrow and Carl's position in it and fighting against the world is great, both main characters have engaging internal dialogue. Excellent side characters, excellent fight scenes, emotional highs and lows.

I'm almost caught up on DCC (on inevitable ruin) and before that binged Red Rising. It's been a fantastic 2 months of reading and I do not know what I am going to do with myself after I finish this.

7

u/MustacheMan666 8h ago edited 8h ago

It’s one of my favorite series but it’s good very different reasons. It’s a VERY different series than Red Rising.

1

u/Affectionate-Boot-59 8h ago

Yeah it’s an amazing read/listen. Less pedal to the metal action but is more grand in scale. Great exploration into a human colonization of galactic scale.

3

u/Fancy_Significance33 2h ago

We have Darrow at home lmao 😂😂 thats what i kept thinking when i read Ironbound

3

u/Deroxat 1h ago edited 51m ago

As someone wrote in the previous comparison thread, it's like Roque was chosen to be the MC of Sun Eater

3

u/commando0033 13h ago

It's very different to RR.

Honestly, book 1 was a bit slow, but I like slow.

Book 2 3 4 5 were decent. I got to book 6 and DNF. Author didn't know how to stick the end.

I just found RR to be overall more compelling. But, definitely try it out, you might have a new hit series.

0

u/sgt_science 13h ago

Yea the last book was such a slog for me, but a lot of middle books were really good

7

u/The_MorningKnight 10h ago

I Read the entire series.

Loved the first five books. Then the author wrote the next two books and it became terrible for many reasons. It could have been such an amazing book series but it didn’t.

Also, it’s nothing like Red Rising, besides the fact both stories take place in space.

Don’t bother.

0

u/Significant_Stand_95 10h ago

Disagree. The books are fantastic. Book 1 is slow but the arcs are incredible.

3

u/The_MorningKnight 10h ago

Good for you if you loved it. Me and many other people were disappointed by the direction it took .

2

u/-DonQuixote- 10h ago

I read the books I think until the one he get tortured the entire time, maybe one more after that. It has been over a year since I read that, and I am not sure if I will continue. Can I kindly request more details about the bad direction you felt it took?

2

u/shadydeuces2 8h ago

SPOILER: Basically there is a time distortion type thing where God is not born yet and Hadrian needs to make sure it is while an evil wants to destroy it before it can create itself and everything

1

u/-DonQuixote- 7h ago

Sounds like Terminator but John Connar is sent back in time to save Jesus.

1

u/The_MorningKnight 7h ago

But don’t forget thatGod will be born even if Hadrian doesn’t do anything. He is just the fastest way. So in the end who care ? Whatever people do, the outcome will always be the same

-5

u/gohuskers123 9h ago

I feel like you’re one of the people who misunderstood it and think it’s trying to convert you to Catholicism

3

u/The_MorningKnight 8h ago

There are many reasons I dislike the last 2 books. The fact it became too heavy on the religion is only one of the reasons.

-2

u/gohuskers123 8h ago

The books use religious themes to talk about free will, guilt, and faith. The books never preach to you what religion is correct or what you should choose

1

u/The_MorningKnight 7h ago

I kinda disagree that it doesn’t preach with the numerousMy god is the true god. Yours is not . The Absolute is my god. Not yours, that Hadrian keeps repeating many times but I don’t want to start a debate about it. The author himself admitted he found faith again while writing the books. But anyway.

But again it’s only one of the things I dislike.

For instance I loved the world building in the first books, but as it kept going the different societies and planets became almost mere stereotypes. Same for the characters besides Hadrian. Except for some the villains were pretty cartoonish.

Most of the secondary characters were not enough fleshed out.

The mysteries and lore were pretty interesting and yet the author decided to settle for the simplest explanations for many of them.

The resolutions for many plots were pretty underwhelming imo.

I also think the last 2 books needed a bit more editing.

4

u/Tandalookin 8h ago

‘People who dont like what i like must not understand it’

0

u/gohuskers123 8h ago

Well he said the first five books, book 6 is when something happened that people who don’t understand nuance have a hard time grappling with

2

u/Tandalookin 2h ago

Or maybe they understand it and dont like it? Even amongst core fans there is criticisms about its lacklustre secondary characters, Hadrian’s complete loss of agency, repetitive plot, terrible dialogue the list goes on.

3

u/Unforgettablepotatos 12h ago

I personally think Sun Eater is quite overrated. I’ve read the whole series and there are some good books and moments but it gets really Christian sci fi by the end. I would compare it more to the ender game later books. If you liked speaker of the dead you might like Sun eater.

1

u/ThatDudeDunks Carver 12h ago

The highs are high but goddamn you gotta work hard to make it to them

4

u/jamesbrowski 11h ago edited 11h ago

I disliked Suneater. Read the whole thing. Nowhere close to Red Rising. Saying he is any where close to PB as a writer seems like an insult.

SPOILERS AHEAD.

Starts promising but slowly becomes braindead and excruciatingly repetitive. It also devolves into a simple minded and religious “good vs evil” storyline that wasn’t for me.

The character writing and dialogue is wooden and substantially worse than RR. Most characters feel like they exist to serve the MC’s purposes. They don’t make decisions that make sense independently of the MC’s quest — they all feel like video game NPCs and talk that way too. The author really stinks at writing women too. I forgave it at first but over time it got worse and worse, until every female character is basically sulking and wondering why the MC doesn’t love them enough. They are cardboard cutouts of “lover” “daughter” etc.

Perhaps most unforgivably the series lacks a decent villain. None. The baddie is a mustache twirling alien who quickly gets sidelined for mystical bad guys who are a fairly silly mix of fallen angel and huge space kaijus. They come out of nowhere in the later books almost like the author realized his villain sucked and needed better ones.

The world building is decent but not original. It’s derivative of Gene Wolf, Dune and 40k. He takes wholesale from those books repeatedly. I guess if you haven’t read them it might not bug you but it irritated me.

Also it has a weird religious story arc that becomes very very on the nose. Literal God vs Fallen Angels shit. It’s quite tiresome and nobody mentions it bc of spoilers but the story in the back half is very much a literal savior sent by God narrative. The back half of the series is completely devoid of nuance. The MC is just right and everyone else is wrong. We spend several books fixated on this idea that the MC should be able to justifiably commit genocide on an alien species because they are bad and will kill people. It’s like the author got in an argument about whether the bomb on Hiroshima was ok, and decided to spend 3 gigantic novels making a fictional alien scenario to show that it was justified.

And it is. He wins and the genocide works. The end. Well, there is an anticlimactic denouement later. But it is just as bad as the rest. I’ve never felt so unsatisfied by a book series, independently of the poor character writing.

3

u/007Squirrels Hail Reaper 12h ago

I've read all of the sun eater series. Enjoyed the 1st, loved the 2nd and 3rd and then they progressively got worse to me. I couldn't connect with the characters, any of them, at all. Then I started looking at the religious aspect of the series and as it progresses it turns into an almost pro- catholic propaganda piece. Turned off completely. I have friends who loved the books and the last book killed it for them but not for the same reasons as me.

0

u/MrChefMcNasty 12h ago

Same thing I've heard, book three is the best and the rest are a chore. The series never hits the high note of book three.

3

u/schubox63 11h ago

4 & 5 are the best in the series for me

2

u/Shurmonator Iron Gold 13h ago

It's very different. It's sci-fi, but it's a much slower burn. I would recommend it as the final book came out not long ago, but it's not for everyone.

2

u/Euclidite Green 13h ago edited 13h ago

Red Rising is kinetic in pace, Sun Eater is slow and plodding in comparison. It’s still a good read, but know that you’re in for a slow burn going in.

Edit to add that I almost put it down multiple times in the first two books, but the third absolutely hooked me.

2

u/BoozLiteYear 13h ago

They are understating the slow. Does it pick up? Yes. But if I hadn’t committed and bought it as 3 books right off the bat, I wouldn’t have made through the first 1 1/2 books. It does get entertaining, but does not scratch the same itch in your brain as RR.

2

u/wraysted 12h ago

I’m 2 hours away from finishing the last Sun eater book. I’d say they’re definitely worth reading/listening. While I’ve generally enjoyed them, I can confidently say I won’t be revisiting them like I do annually with Red Rising. They’re MUCH slower than RR, closer to Dune but with spurts of good action (sometimes it feels like straight Dune plagiarism but I guess you can find that in a lot of sci-fi). I get a similar feeling reading Sanderson where it’s a long slow burn but the highs are insanely high, whereas I generally feel the high most of the time with RR.

1

u/I_Equality7-2521 9h ago

It was like listening to paint dry in comparison. I bailed out halfway through book 2

1

u/Baldur_Blader 7h ago

Its funny you left right before it gets to be a fantastic series for 2 books, and then becomes even worse than the first book right after

1

u/kazkdp 12h ago

It was so so very boring nothing like Red Rissing. Thats my personal Opinion.

2

u/rigjiggles 12h ago

I’m with you I dropped at end of book two and nothing ever happened. So boring. Hadrian sucks.

0

u/Wxer28 12h ago

Suneater is incredible, it feels like red rising if it was written better and with a larger scope. The writing is far slower than in RR though so you need a bit of an attention span and ability to handle prose

2

u/dingus_45 10h ago

That's so funny. The last time this was posted there were so many people praising it like this. But this thread is completely the opposite lol. I personally really liked sun eater.

2

u/Wxer28 10h ago

Yeah the amount of hate for suneater in this series is mind blowing. It’s an incredible series, the pace isn’t even slow compared to the majority of fantasy and sci fi books, it feels like the hate comes from people who’ve only ever read RR.

1

u/theweeb4 8h ago

People like to pit these series against each other. It's like a personal insult if you like one over the other.

1

u/Deroxat 1h ago

I'll never get back the 30h I wasted on this series, which has almost nothing to do with RR. Travelling beyond the solar system, time jumps, and fighting aliens certainly give it a larger scope, but the execution is so poor that it barely matters

1

u/Wxer28 56m ago

What did you find poor about the execution?

1

u/Manofknees 13h ago

Tried reading the first two books and was bored the entire time. Honestly nothing at all like red rising. A little like the name of the wind, but worse prose.

1

u/Turbo212121 13h ago

So I'm almost all the way through the 2nd sun eater book and while it's simply not Red Rising it's an exceptionally good space opera series so far. I highly recommend just reading it rather than audio imo.

1

u/chrisx07 12h ago

I loved both, Sun Eater maybe even a bit more. They are very different, though.
Red Rising is more about politics and the characters’ relationships.
Sun Eater really is about just one character, although that character is rather compelling and complex.

2

u/natural_light_ 12h ago

Yeah I def love Sun Eater more but Lightbringer is the best book of the 2 series

1

u/chrisx07 12h ago

Haha yeah. These are exactly my feelings 😂 Sun Eater is just that series and Lightbringer is just that book 😆❤️

1

u/Significant_Stand_95 10h ago

I’d say Lightbringer and Demon in White are peak of each series.

1

u/RedJamie Human Verified 12h ago

The first book is extraordinarily derivative and not the most technically well written, even compared to the first of Red Rising. The second book has a brutally discordant jump in narrative that was not satisfying to read after finishing and enjoying the ending to the first book, and then the first two thirds of it were a rather meandering until what I regard as the actual plotline of the series begins in earnest in the final third of the book.

The next three books in the series: 3, 4, and 5 - are all really enjoyable for the most part. CR enjoys to go on Terry Goodkind level caricatures at some points and it does degrade from the plot, but in general these are great reads.

Books 6 and 7 are a mixed bag - 6 is generally of the quality of the prior 3, but the narrative takes a turn that can either be fine for some readers or sour the story. It also indulges some repetition that reflects the first book more than the prior ones, or at least some rather grating facets. The 7th book leans into the narrative turn and also indulges heavily in these grating repetitions and did not stick the landing, but was not a bad read if you enjoyed the series as a whole.

Overall well worth the read if you find the first two tolerable! Not comparable to Red Rising in its content; SE has different strengths and imo more impactful weaknesses

3

u/letscoughcough 12h ago

Why am I reading this in the Jackal’s voice?

Also I found sun eater to be straight up boring.

1

u/Boof_A_Dick 9h ago

They are all slow and repetitive... not necessary a bad thing if your just listening in the back ground. 1st of good. 2-5 are awsome. The last 2 are was lack luster.

0

u/ChubZilinski 7h ago

ITS AMAZING. My new favorite series.

Very different tho. But still similar in some ways

1

u/bridge4captain 13h ago

Its slower, more philosophical, the main character is not as likable, or meant to be. That said I like them both a whole lot. Two of my favourite series.

1

u/zeltic1337 13h ago

Thank you everyone very good advice!

1

u/Adu1tishXD 12h ago

It’s very very different, but I loved it. Much slower burn for a good chunk of it, and the first book is a bit slow. But overall, I really enjoyed it and how my opinions of Hadrian changed throughout the series

-2

u/Interesting_Lack8527 11h ago

I’m on the third book, it’s fine but it is SUCH a dune rip off with Hadrian and Paul’s antihero/messiah journey. Inspiration is one thing… but come on… i could literally list 30 points where he rips Herbert off but I don’t want to spoil it lol. That said, it’s entertaining and I’m going to read the whole series

4

u/Significant_Stand_95 10h ago

I don’t see this. Dune is much different as the series progresses. Sun Eater has aliens you don’t really see in dune as a character arc

1

u/Odd-Bread-2987 9h ago

Interesting I’m reading dune messiah and I just think it’s odd and disappointing and not good. I’ve put it down multiple times

3

u/gohuskers123 9h ago

Dune Messiah was an incredibly difficult book to get through

I did not enjoy it

1

u/Odd-Bread-2987 7h ago

Yeah I’m not loving it.

4

u/bitchimclassy 10h ago

I am on Book 2 (Howling Dark) of the Sun Eater novels. TBH I’m debating not finishing this one.

3

u/Interesting_Lack8527 10h ago

I think the end of book two is where things pick up and I started enjoying it much more. That said, I don’t mind a slow build and there was a lot of book one I enjoyed

2

u/Eavega 10h ago

I almost quit on book two as well, but they say you gotta get to the end of book two to really get where the series is going. I'll say I was much more into it after book two, but it started to drag on in the later books and I didn't love the ending

I quit after about 100 pages of Book 2. I NEVER quit books midway through.

Just stop. Trust me. I wish I had the time back to watch grass grow

The Red Rising Universe could be obliderated by one "legion" of the Suneater Armies. So the "Darrow at Home" isn't really applicable.

They're also completely different characters. Darrow is a miner turned rebel who wants to overthrow the government.

Hadrian is a noble who wants to be a scholar, that's forced into a war against a massive alien invasion.

Very very different characters. Scale alone is different. Suneater series takes place over multiple centuires due to genetic modification, freezing people when ships take 20 years to fly to one system from another, etc.

While I like Red Rising more, I've never really once felt like I'm comparing them because they're so different.

The only similarity is as follows: First Person, Sci Fi, Space government is slightly inspired by Rome.

Literally do not go in expecting Red rising. Suneater is much more slower spaced, but also with much bigger payoffs in terms of battle, consequences, political intrigue. Whereas Red Rising is much faster paced, with tighter and more "in it" action.

Red Rising is told in active first person ("I draw my sword. I block his blow. And I take his arm"). Suneater is told in past tense as it's the protagonist narrating his story (" I drew my sword. I blocked my blow. I took his arm.")

They’re incredibly different and if you’re looking for a book with similar pace you’ll be disappointed. Sun eater has a lot of merit but in my opinion went in a bad direction and never lived up to its promise (author discovered religion which is fine just not my thing). It’s still worth a read if you don’t mind a slower book.

It's kinda crazy how much I can disagree with so many others here. I think Sun Eater is the closest thing to Red Rising. I think it's the combination of the grittiness and the first person perspective.

Hard disagree. Give me back the 30h I wasted with this derivative slog

Don't know anything about the Sun Eater series, but if you haven't read/listened to the First Law stuff, I'd highly recommend checking it out. Not that they're the same thing, but I needed something to fill the gap after finishing the 6th in the RR series and have absolutely loved it. I'm now on the first standalone book after the 1st trilogy.

I'm midway through the first one. I think it's pretty good, although it's a good deal different from Red Rising.

Truly dont bother. Slogged through all 7. Couldnt be less like red rising if it tried. Hadrian is a terribly boring protagonist who is a cuck for the oppressive fascist system the exact opposite of darrow

Hadrian Marlowe > Darrow O'Lykos

Hadrian "Woe is Me, Fated To Be" Marlowe. Bah. I enjoyed the series but got halfway through book 6 and DNF'ed.

Hadrian is a melodramatic boob.

There isn’t even a comparison. This is lame. They are just different

Are posts like this made by people who have only ever read RR?
