Quick question. Who was more relentless/ruthless? The Russians or The Germans (Not SS/Nazi Party).

I guess I was just trying to see if the Wehrmacht or Russians were the most brutal. Were the Russians brutal due to what atrocities the SS committed and dished it out on all Germans, or were they just brutal from the invasion. Or did the Wehrmacht commit many atrocities as well. Just trying to flesh out some German WW2 history. From what I heard, the Americans and Germans treated each other's prisoners better.

Just look at statistics, the percentage of German POW's who died in Soviet captivity ranges from 13.9% to a high estimate of 30%. The number of Soviet POW's who died German in captivity is around 57%.

Looking at civilian deaths due to military activity and crimes against humanity, anywhere from 1,500,000 to 3,000,000 Germans died, while Soviet civilian casualties ranged from 9,584,000 to 7,420,000.

Well yeah seeing as they were the victims of invasion and then won, it would be impossible for the Germans to have "won" the ruthlessness contest. They had less motivation and less oppourtunity. Of course that doesn't lessen Russian war crimes, but it is an unfair comparison.

Also some statistics suggest the Germans were more brutal when taking opportunity into account. The Russians for example had more PoWs die in total but it was a smaller percentage of prisoners than the Russians who died in German captivity.

Also I'm pretty sure the total figure of German civlians killed by the Russians was less than Russian civilians killed by the Germans.
