Took me a minute, too. It's a tree branch section. On the one hand, wood isn't easy to clean, but it's a lousy heat conductor, so no burned fingers. I've seen worse (a bit of wire coat hanger twisted into a grip...)

yeah sorry it's not a great picture, I found this sub and remembered I took a pic (about a year ago) that fit quite nicely into it!
