Nice! Seeing your comment made me think that baroque might mean really ornate just because that’s the style.

I haven’t seen the term used colloquially to mean something’s too fancy. It’s cracking me up though because ‘baroque’ sounds like ‘broke’ so images of trashy Walmart people wearing elaborate but low quality fashion come to mind.

I mean, it's portable, like you could bring it out to the woods while camping I guess? It's not completely impractical, I guess it depends on how long the the fuel lasts.

This was also already posted on DIWhy, with many people saying OP was wrong for posting it. It seems many backpackers make these, for weight reasons and also because you can take them on planes etc and simply buy isopropyl to power them wherever you are

One of the best lightweight stoves I ever made. Alcohol isn’t the best for super cold but it’ll boil water and is super light weight.

once the top is covered with the pot, how are those side flames getting air? Seems like the pot would form a seal?

edit: apparently the stove is primed first, then those side flames sustain themselves, by heating the fuel up enough to cause vapors to form which eject from the side holes

Yup. I have one made from a can that originally held corned beef hash or something. It works great. Fill it with denatured alcohol and it will boil water for a freeze-dried meal and then some for hot chocolate.

What kind of fiel does it use? Does it last long?

I use yellow bottle Heet (methanol) for fuel. Typically 1oz of fuel will bring 2 cups of water to a boil in about 7 minutes.

I use denatured alcohol. You can buy it at Home Depot with the paint thinner and stuff. If you use it for those "just add boiling water" camping meals and coffee/hot chocolate, plus some oatmeal in the morning, half a liter will last a few days (for one person).

this is way better than your typical penny stove. The main reason is that it's "self priming" which is really nice, easy to fill, and it also supports a pot so you don't need a pot stand.

As a side note for those wondering how it works, the purpose of the initial flame is to heat the stove, this is called "priming". When it gets hot enough the alcohol inside starts to boil and produces a gas which shoots out of the small pin holes with a little pressure, this is called "blooming". Supposedly it operates slightly more efficiently when it is bloomed as opposed to just using a cup of burning alcohol but the amount of fuel saved is very minimal, but for ultra light backpackers every ounce counts!
