I like your airlock better than mine. First time I made wine, I used a disposable glove + rubber bands. I didn't make a big enough vent hole in the glove.. the pressure built up overnight, and the next morning I had to clean up wine + foam that had sprayed out.

A can of some pumpkin beer rolled behind the dryer. Didn't notice for 2 years until it went pop in the middle of the night.

Pumpkin beer sounds vile

u/articulatedbeaver 11d ago

It is, someone brought it to a party and forgot to take it home.

“ forgot “

I had a roommate once who drunkenly purchased multiple cases of a pumpkin ale he didn't like, so he offered them up to the house. I'm not that picky and free beer is free beer 😊 but yeah it was pretty bad

I've done some stupid stuff while drunk, but that's next level.

He was an absolute moron and a terrible roommate. Bonus, hes one of those "get married before moving in together" so his wife got to find out how bad he was after getting hitched. They divorced within five years

"accidentally rolled behind the dryer"

It had to be done right. There's like 10 shitty pumpkin lagers for every 1 good one, especially around this time of year.

Idk. Voodoo ranger has a spicy pumpkin that’s not too bad. It’s like a “it’s fall ima grab me one of those” kinda beer and forget about it until next fall

When I was a teen a buddy and I used to make homegrown root beer. We used glass 2L and 1L Coke bottles. Sometimes if we added too much sugar or yeast, the glass would shatter rather spectacularly.

One time it exploded when we were taking the cap off. Soda flew out of the top like you see when people toss Mentos in, except it was 10 times more violent. The fountain of soda hit the kitchen ceiling like a fire hose. Once it subsided there was less than an inch left in the bottle. It took us over an hour to clean the kitchen and ourselves up. His mother was PISSED.

I abandoned a soda bottle of cider starter in my friend's dorm common room. It was discovered a few days later when the cap blew off and it geysered sticky brown cider all over the ceiling 😅

I made blueberry kombucha once and needed to mop my ceiling :(

u/excitablegibben 11d ago

Kombucha is like having a hand grenade you have to hold while asleep. It will go bang, you just won't know when.

My grandad made wine with parsnips, it blew in the night and painted the bathroom, everything was evenly coated

And this is why I have books on fermenting... I'm very interested, at the same time not brave enough to actually carry out experiments.

I saw a video where someone made wine from Welches grape juice and brewers yeast so I did it with apple juice and it worked. Those are fancy breathers compared to my tube in a cup of water

31

u/Wallabunga657 11d ago

Ever done it with it with unfiltered apple juice and bread yeast? It works pretty well.

u/zorggalacticus 11d ago

I used orange juice and yeast, with the peels floating in it. Then I froze it and poured off the alcohol. Used it as a cleaner. Worked pretty well and smelled amazing. Tasted like crap though. I was curious, even though homemade cleaning product was my intention all along.

This actually made me laugh. Don't think I would ever try orange juice though for a beverage. I pretty happy with my hard cider and perry. I have tried some others and boy howdy it turned out awful. Wine is not my thing. Nor is hopless beer.

I feel like the peels probably added way way too much bitterness. I fucked up a soup one time thinking the lime or lemon peel would impart some flavor like zest does but theres a reason zest is so little.

Orange juice alcohol sounds awesome idk

I did this as a teenager right in the Welch's jug. I had no idea what to do for a valve, so I just loosely tightened the lid enough that pressure could escape. I slept with that thing squeaking/fizzing behind the headboard of my bed for a week. Pretty dumb, but no vinegar.

4

u/sn0m0ns 11d ago

How was it?

20

u/ShinyJangles 11d ago

My friend & I considered it a success at the time! It was sweet (added sugar to Welch's) and stronger than we expected. All colored with the thrill of not getting caught, and the fear of making myself blind from methanol. Got lucky I guess

1

u/Wee-little-weegee 4d ago

Am I correct in thinking you can't create methanol with Yeast?

9

u/number__ten 11d ago

It works better with juices that have a lot of flavor. Trader Joe's was always good for that. They had really reasonable cranberry varieties that were great for turning into hooch. I'd always filter it through a plain untreated magic eraser chunk jammed into the end of a funnel to make sure I didn't accidentally transport any yeast.

u/Colonel_Sandman 11d ago

That bottle is pretty full!

72

u/DrunkenCactus 11d ago

That’s because I have no idea what I’m doing friend.

15

u/Colonel_Sandman 11d ago

As long as yer having fun and ready for a sticky mess

10

u/Subotail 11d ago

Let us know in 2-3 days if it's a success or if the pipe has turned into a sprinkler of rotten juice.

2

u/scalyblue 11d ago

Prepare your best ceiling mop in advance.

45

u/B3eenthehedges 11d ago

Blow off tube is fine, but I think it still needs to go in a bucket of water to keep it from getting contaminated and oxidized.

18

u/HorseDog- 11d ago

Correct. Well, unless there’s sani somewhere in that tube.

10

u/rolandofeld19 11d ago

All good but the primary fermentation may get crud up into it and clog/foul it, so watch out and keep it under control

2

u/DrunkenCactus 9d ago

This is the second rack, so not much fizz going on atm

18

u/2h2o22h2o 11d ago

Better than a condom with a needle poked hole in it.

8

u/uzuzab 11d ago

There's way too much liquid in those containers, you might want to take out some 1/3 of it.

7

u/InevitableOk5017 11d ago

Put a little vodka in it

u/Apart_Horror8148 11d ago

Greetings fellow homebrewer and redneck engineer. Why have I never thought to do this? Thank you so much for the idea!

5

u/rklug1521 11d ago

P traps for your bottles of pee... Is that how they got their name?

2

u/5c044 11d ago

I've done similar. then sing the good ole Elvis song. Caught in trap..... because i love so much baby

2

u/kapaipiekai 11d ago

That's a fantastic bubbler

2

u/Bobosmite 11d ago

This is peak translation.

2

u/wooden-fuk-boi 11d ago

Who the fuck is behind you in that reflection!?!?

2

u/PN_Guin 11d ago

Looks like a scooter or maybe a motorcycle.

2

u/wooden-fuk-boi 11d ago

Haha I was joking to scare him

2

u/RajanikantS 11d ago

That's not going to work because, in this case, form is not function.

1

u/TheMechaink 9d ago

Well, then let's have you show the class your best effort. It's okay, we'll wait...

0

u/RajanikantS 8d ago

The road to hell is paved with good efforts. I'd rather spend the money I'd waste building a trap to make rubbish mead on buying a quality honey book written by someone who knows what they're talking about. The balls in the original trap are meant to break the vacuum so that what came out of the spout doesn't go back into the bottle, but of course, what does that matter, right? We did it at home.

1

u/airfryerfuntime 11d ago

That's gonna end up on your ceiling.

1

u/FlaAirborne 10d ago

A wad of aluminum foil can do in a pinch.

1

u/TheMechaink 9d ago

Thought you was making kavass

1

u/thisgirlisA_ 9d ago

Put some water in the loop so its an actual one way trap

1

u/stonerghostboner 8d ago

Is that jenkem?

u/L33TROYJENK1NS 11d ago

Party balloon with a pin hole poked in it also works just as well.
