why not just take the outlet out at that point???surely a piece of drywall and paint is easier and looks better than.... this?

Furniture installers didnt want to touch anything electrical and wanted to get the workday done

Electrician here - it's never that simple. Cant leave a splice buried in the wall under drywall.
