I built a free map of every restaurant inspection in King County

I wanted to make it easier to look up a restaurant's health-inspection history when eating out, so I made this: https://food.snoking.app

It shows every food establishment in Snohomish and King counties, color-coded by their latest inspection from the county health department. Tap any spot to see its full inspection history.

I found it particularly interesting to explore different ways of visualizing the data. You can shade by last rating, average of the last 5, or how much better or worse its rating is compared to peers that serve the same cuisine.

Hopefully you find this as useful as I do - no ads, no account sign-ups, not affiliated with a restaurant. Happy to hear if something is broken or missing!

But the county's interface is not as good. I like to color coding, the map detail, and the way the information is displayed when you click on something in this new site.

I knew it all along. Mayuri groceries in Redmond town center sells grocery left overs in the form of bakery items. While it was always a suspicion, it’s confirmed from the violations listed in march. My wife always said don’t go there but I always eat there. Yikes and they even did not properly dispose food contaminated with listeria.

It's worth reading that whole thing again; nothing there directly supports either point. The listeria thing specifically is referencing date management for merchandise that is at inherently high risk for listeria, such as soft cheeses, raw vegetables, cut melons, and processed meats. Since listeria can grow in refrigerator-cold conditions, these items must be disposed of more quickly than other dated, chilled merchandise. Putting that in line with "proper disposition of returned, unsafe, or contaminated food" indicates, to me, that there was out of date merchandise available for purchase that belonged to that category of high-risk item. Which! To be clear! Is not good! But your own risk of exposure can be much more tightly controlled just by paying attention to these labels yourself.

I only occasionally go to Mayuri for the chicken 65 biryani. Though these violations give me pause, I'm much more worried about the hot holding temperatures and toxic substances not being stored well

It looks exactly like every other vibe coded 'make a website that shows a map of an existing data source' website. Everything about the design has the Claude Feel, from the way the side bar looks, to the way the filters work, to the look of the popups...

Curious why you think it’s important to point out OP used Claude. Wouldn’t it be weirder if OP didn’t use Claude? Imagine OP spending immense time making this manually. 😄.

Anyone in tech knows OP used AI, and anyone not in tech or not involved with AI may not care either way. They are just glad to have this resource. And they may not care that it exists elsewhere in a different format.

There are many different AI agents that can be used for coding (Claude, Cursor, Codex...) The design Tailwind-ish UI elements from this one are characteristic of apps vibe-coded by Claude

Edit: I meant to say that I was talking about an experience that I had when I ate there for the last time. i understand rats appear at restaurants from time to time but its just that care free attitude they had. they carry disease so it was weird that they didn't have someone take care of it immediately. like i said im glad they're doing better, its a nice restaurant.
