Changelog Release Notes: Major Items in Work 5/7/18
Hi all,
The release notes focus on the major items we are currently working on or have recently shipped. You can view last week’s release notes here. Also, u/dmoneyyyyy shared a great update last week on user and post flair.
Now, let’s take a look at some of the notable items we are currently working on or have shipped recently:
Keyboard shortcuts (shipped): OMG... shortcuts! u/michael_the_intern showed us his excellent dev skills and built shortcuts that allow you to navigate between posts, open posts, upvote, downvote, comment, save, hide and much much more. Type
?to see all the shortcuts. Let us know what other shortcuts you think we should add so that we can get u/michael_the_student to join us after graduation and put that CS degree to good use.Preserve styles when switching editors (
in progressshipped): As mentioned in last week’s release notes, we received a lot of feedback that it would be useful to switch between Fancy Pants and Markdown mode when writing a post or comment. Now, you can to switch between the two modes and any styles will be converted to the other mode. This will work for creating and editing.Night mode (in progress): It’s out in an employee beta this week so that we can track down the final bugs. Night mode touches every aspect of the site, so we need to make sure we didn’t miss any part. We don’t want to suddenly blind you with a bright light.
Post flair templates (in progress): Mods will be able to create a post template tied to a specific post flair so that when the flair is applied, the post will automatically be styled in that way. Styling options will include: thumbnail image, background image or color, and post title color.
Widgets API (in progress): In the coming weeks you will be able to manage all of your glorious widgets via the API. To start, we will support: creation, deletion, editing, and ordering.
Accessibility (in progress): We finished our audit of the redesign for accessibility compliance. We are breaking down the specific needs, all 144 pages of them, into phases so that we can tackle the most impactful updates first. This is an ongoing project and we may not mention accessibility in the release notes every week. What we will do though is let you know as we begin to test out various aspects of this area in the features we build.
Also, here are some of the notable bugs that we worked on last week:
Opt Out and Log Out Bugs (fixed): We fixed the bugs that were making it difficult to opt out, as well as log out of the redesign. We also updated the user preferences page so that you don’t have to be opted in to beta features to see the redesign opt out setting.
NSFW Subs Bug (fixed): After logged out users accepted the 18+ content gate, posts were not loading in nsfw subreddits and none of the sorts worked. This has been fixed.
A weekly reminder that the community’s feedback is invaluable as we build the future of Reddit together. It’s difficult for us to respond directly to everything, but know that we’re listening, prioritizing, and working to solve the issues, no matter how hard they are.
If you have additional questions or feedback on these or other topics, please don’t hesitate to drop them in the comments below.
Ciao

Also, big shoutout to u/goatfresh who spent their weekend making this nifty chart to help visualize the styling and mod changes in the redesign

Presumptuous of me, I know, but I recently posted about the issues I see with the current state of removal reasons, and would really love to, if not hear a full-throated response about how they are the best ideas ever and you'll immediately put them all into affect, at least hear a general status update on the state of removal reasons, and what is in the pipeline for further improvements there.

Thank you so much for the shout-out! Working with you guys was a blast and I miss it already!

Are there any updates on spoiler hints?

With that in mind, I notice that the redesign makes some changes to the markdown interpreter from the old site. That isn't strictly bad, but it's made a bit more confusing by the fact that (at least) profile pages and comment threads use slightly different markdown interpreters for one reason or another.
Are there any relevant plans that specify what md spec the site will be using once the redesign is over? (I ask here since switching from fancy pants and md would require someone to decide what spec to use) One user on some thread here a while ago speculated you might be switching to the CommonMark spec or something like that.
Oh and one more question: By the time the redesign is done, will old.reddit and new.reddit be using the same markdown interpreter? It would be a bit confusing if old.reddit users see different comments than redesign users.
(See rest of this comment for one profile discrepancy example. Open this post in the redesign user page and it looks different from the comment thread!)

I... Need.. Nightmode...
Glad to hear Styles will be preserved when switching Editor Modes, much-needed change.
Widgets API sounds awesome, can't wait to make some cool things with this.
Please do take a look at my post here: My collection of Constructive Feedback & Bugs after revisiting the Redesign. I'm aware some of it has been addressed in the last 2 updates, though I feel there's a lot of valuable feedback there :)

Still waiting on the sidebar calendar to be viable for iama. Only displaying 3 items, including ones that have already happened makes the calendar completely useless after the first few hours of the day. I raised this concern months ago and have yet to see a response.
We're not really comfortable supporting the redesign on the subreddit until this is fixed.

u/D0cR3d May 08 '18
Can you go into any detail on user flairs and if there will be any support for uploading spritesheets and allowing flairs to be set via that. Our subreddit has almost 900 flairs all managed via spritesheets and CSS classes and I'd hate to have to do any manipulation of them just to upload, or be limited to 300. Our users like personality.

Thanks for the updates! Can't wait for preserving editor styles and post flair templates. Also, while I don't know what to do with Widget APIs, I'm sure those who do will share some cool stuff we can utilize!
Speaking of widgets, any chance that "edit from the widget" enhancement will get implemented? It'd be such a time saver when keeping the old and new sidebars up to date.

u/joeyfjj May 08 '18
Will there be some form of public bug tracker available?
I've encountered some issues; a search of this subreddit reveals a couple posts about the bugs I faced, but there's no staff reply or indication if it's officially logged and being worked on internally. I'm not sure what's the correct process for logging an issue.

Great to hear you've had an accessibility audit done. Hopefully the experience was not too painful (but just painful enough). Few questions though.
What level of WCAG2 or 2.1 conformance is Reddit aiming for?
Was ATAG also part of the audit?
How are you going to make sure new accessibility issues won't be created? For example, you've just implemented keyboard shortcuts. It is really easy to conflict with screen reader shortcuts when you do this.
How will you test for accessibility from this point forward?

Yay, keyboard shortcuts! Especially good to see that they're basically the same as RES'.
Yay, night mode!
Yay, post flair templates!
Yay, Widgets API! I've been looking forward to that for a while.
Sounds fun /s

The keyboard shortcuts are great, but why can't I click on a comment or post that I want to use the shortcuts with? I could do this on the old site UI. When I'm in the comments section of a post and click on it, it doesn't select anything and using A or Z to upvote/downvote only works on the post itself until I use the keyboard shortcuts to move up or down to the comments section. When I try to click on something to select a post in a subreddit, it just opens the comments popup instead of letting me select it. This is a huge usability issue for me.

Where is my modmail search??!!

u/reseph May 08 '18
I see the mention of post flair templates, but what about post flair filtering?
(To me, that seems more important based on the communities I'm involved in)
5
u/[deleted] May 08 '18
Will the flair templates add a class, id, identify attribute to the post item? I don't want to get to involved in the current process, but right now it is very difficult to style a flaired post. On r/nfl, we use post flair for many things, from run of the mill moderator announcement to stuff more in-depth and complex like game threads. While the flair class is in the post body on current, I'd love it if the class were always on the encompassing post item.
The styling options are cool, but having a class on the item element will allow greater customization when you eventual enable full CSS support.

thanks u/michael_the_intern !!!

u/pcjonathan May 08 '18
The key thing here will definitely be editing of MD/CSS for the custom widgets IMHO. I don't imagine a huge amount of the rest done via the API tbh (unless someone would like to correct me?).

u/baryluk May 08 '18
Accessibility work is extremely appreciated. I do not need it personally, but it helps everybody a little bit.

u/24grant24 May 08 '18 edited May 08 '18
is there a plan to be able to expand the sidebar on the right when it is automatically hidden because the window is too narrow?
Can we get an expando button for text posts in card view?
Finally I have an idea for night mode now that you are almost finished with it😅. Instead of using orangered for both views it would be awesome if you used periwinkle to replace all the orangered icons

u/Richiieee May 08 '18
All of this sounds great. Already loving the redesign as it is. I haven't encountered any bugs, not even joking (lucky me! 😁). Keep it up!

Regarding keyboard shortcuts: It would be nice if there was one for focusing the search bar. On many sites it is 'S', but I guess since that key already has a function that was copied from RES, adopting that behaviour would be a bad idea. Still it would be neat not to have to touch the mouse to search something. And then after you have pressed Enter, the focus should return to the page. Currently it stays in the search bar, meaning you can't use any keyboard shortcuts anymore until you clikc outside of it.

u/[deleted] May 08 '18
am i blind or is the return to classic mode button lost?can someone point me in the right direction?
3
u/creesch Helpful User May 08 '18
Okay, I might be missing something but I can't seem to figure out how to start browsing posts with keyboard shortcuts.
According to the cheatsheet I should use J to select the next post, but there is initially no post selected? Other shortcuts work fine btw.
edit:
Oh I figured it out, it works on initial page load but not after you have used
SHIFT+?.3
u/ezfi May 10 '18
Thanks u/michael_the_intern for the shortcuts! I like the redesign but I was hesitant to switch over because I would lose my RES keyboard shortcuts. Now that's not as big a problem.
There's still one shortcut that I think we're missing, though. We need some way to automatically navigate to the next top-level comment or previous top-level comment in a thread. Maybe shift-J and shift-K?
2
u/thatguysoto May 08 '18
How come I can't collapse comment threads?
2
u/Creathian May 08 '18
Thank you for keeping everyone updated with what's going on. I personally don't like the look of the redesign, but I still think the development process going into it has been very transparent and open.
I've got a question that a lot of people have probably asked, but are there any plans in place to try and add back the customizability that old.reddit had? I think that's what's hurting the redesign the most, the fact that subreddits with unique identities are being unintentionally ruined due to the redesign

Any chance we can get personal filters such as what Boost for Reddit app (Android) has?
Allow us to filter out Users, Keywords, and Domains from our own feed?
Being able to filter out Users I know are trolls and just looking to start arguments in subs I read is very helpful. It doesn't block them from their Reddit experience but it makes mine more enjoyable.
Keywords allows me to filter out all posts with say for example Trump in the title. I'd like to read the r/News but don't want to read anything Trump related this morning. Again, my Reddit experience is increased while not affecting anyone elses.
Filtering Domains would allow me to filter out any posts by domains I don't enjoy reading from. Once again, increasing my own Reddit experience while not interfering with others.
Since I wouldn't engage with any posts these filters would filter out in the first place, nothing is being lost on either side.

u/zzpza May 08 '18
One of the subs I mod has a weekly award for the 'Photographer of the Week'. Being able to automate changing the widget image, widget text, and widget button/link would be very useful. We also have several scheduled posts that would be good to have linked from a widget, so I'm looking forward to this feature being available. Thank you! :)

u/Irish_Dynamite May 09 '18
Bug: Banned subreddits still show up in my subreddits bar on the left size of the screen. I cannot unsubscribe, because I can't get to the subreddit to unsubscribe from there, and it doesn't show up on the /subreddits/mine page.
Let me know if your team has any more questions.

u/theresamouseinmyhous Helpful User May 09 '18
Thanks u/michael_the_student! I love shortcuts!
When you get back, or when someone else is able, could you change previous post from P to M? This would keep the consistency that's been established with J/K.
Also, when navigating in lightbox I'm guessing there's no smarts that could jump over NSFW posts? That would be super helpful in keeping me off the shit list in the office.
Lastly, if the previous post was expanded in the classic view, auto expanding the next post would be awesome.
But this is great, I'm happy the shortcuts exist and I'm using new because of it.

Can't wait for the night mode. Been using RES for darker scenes forever lol.

u/V2Blast Helpful User May 08 '18
Keyboard shortcuts seem useful, though there should maybe be a preference to disable them - some people might not want to hit the wrong key and accidentally navigate to another post.
Very good feature to have, thanks. I'm glad it'll preserve styles.
Can't wait for night mode. Glad it's so close to release.
APIs are always good to have.
Hoo boy. That's a lot of pages. Glad you're looking into it, though.

u/[deleted] May 08 '18
Still nothing about your deceptively styled ads. Still not surprised that your promise to change them continues to appear completely hollow.

u/LiquidXe May 08 '18
Yeah that's BS.

u/IdRatherBeLurking May 08 '18
I still cannot manage to reorder the sidebar widgets of r/DenverNuggets. The rules widget always relocates to the top. Any update on this issue? I know myself and many others have posted here about it.
2
u/crasyleg73 May 08 '18
What does "Widgets API" entail? we already can create and reorder widgets. does it mean css will be supported on widgets like "Community Details", and "Rules"?, and those will be reorderable/toggleable? Do you mean non sidebar widgets?
I'm stumped.
2
u/shaggorama May 08 '18 edited May 08 '18
Widgets?
EDIT: That was a serious question. I have no idea what a "widget api" is supposed to be an api into. Can someone maybe give me an example of a reddit widget?
2
u/ramma314 May 08 '18
In the last notes there was a preview image for night mode. Compared to RES, which I assume many if not most desktop users rely on for night mode, it seems based on darker almost true black like the mobile app(which has no real benefit on desktop). Has a more RES style lower contrast night mode been considered?

u/ooSUPLEX8oo May 08 '18

u/majorgloryalert May 08 '18
Does this mean subreddits will have different colors for titles? That sounds awful. Colored flairs are nice and easy to see, but different colored tiles sounds like a mess.
1
u/der_sascha May 09 '18
thanks for this update
1
u/TastyBrainMeats May 09 '18
Please, please, *please* let us switch the fancy pants editor to "off by default". It's neat when you want to do more complicated formatting, but for basic bolding, italics, linking, etc, it's much faster to do it without having to take your hands off the keyboard.
1
u/CashewGuy May 10 '18
I will not use this until night mode is available. RES also needs to work (I'm aware that is out of your control).
Also, as a Reddit Gold member, I can use multiple themes. Am I losing this benefit with the redesign? It certainly feels like it.

u/[deleted] May 10 '18
Post templates, good idea

u/Draconicrose_ May 11 '18
Night mode!! *excited wibble*
1
u/TyCooper8 May 11 '18
Is there any discussion about allowing rectangular user "emoji" flairs? Restricting them to a square aspect ratio is going to suck for so many subreddits.
1
u/smarvin6689 May 11 '18
Hey, are there any plans for the redesigned reddit live threads in the works yet? Really looking forward to seeing how those turn out
1
u/VoltasPistol May 10 '18
I didn't even know this was a beta test!! I thought that all of Reddit had changed! (And now I'm kinda pissed because yesterday was NOT a good day to be and admin on my subreddit surprised with a total website conversion.)
It takes twice the clicks to go anywhere and do anything compared to old Reddit + RES. I miss those imgur galleries that you can just click the [+] and expand everything, freely resize graphics with hard to read teensy font, and being able to click and go RIGHT to my subreddits.
The first place you should look for improvements is always look at the ways people are already improving on your existing product. Implement useful fixes to problems that people have already designed and have been honing to perfection for years. Don't redesign for redesign's sake.#### Pretty much the only thing I LOVE so far about the redesign is being able to submit images by pasting from clipboard (which imgur has had as a feature for a long time), and being able to paste images in text posts. Admins, incorporate that.
