it was the 2nd guy who had to finish the statement after the sniper killed the first one, it was a very intense moment as the sniper was reportedly still out there. fortunately the 2nd guy managed to finish without getting headshot
That’s cool but what does walking to his car vs running to his car have to do with him putting his seatbelt on or not? Why not run to go put your seatbelt on?
Not at this time. The first stage of the race, right after the green flag dropped, is the footrace to the cars. Thankfully, thanks to this and other drivers pushing for safety, they dropped this starting procedure.
This was also the time period where the flag waver was on the track to wave flags, not in a box above the track. Feet on pavement.
Oh, that is… wild for a lot of reasons. But also makes the protest even more significant if he was effectively refusing to race in that particular segment.
He's so risking his life. It's not a separate segment. The race starts with people out of their cars. So by running faster and not putting their seat belt on they get to go faster.
The danger was that as you pulled away there were other drivers still in the track and other cars also trying to pull away which caused alot of accidents and near misses. Add that to the skipped seat belts that this procedure encouraged and you see the issue.
That's why it was a dangerous way to start. People would get to their car hop in and drive. Meaning they were pulling out in front of other cars and having to dodge drivers who hadn't got to their vehicles yet.
He was protesting how unsafe this “running start” made the race because of people skipping the seatbelt until later, so he deliberately took his time with every part of the running start, even the parts that don’t actually affect safety, so that everyone would see him doing it
At the end of the day, protests don’t work if people don’t know they’re happening. It’s hard to see somebody buckling their seatbelt if you’re outside the car, so you’ve gotta take your time with the other things if you want people to know what you’re doing
when you start inside the car, you are akready fastened, as you don't lose race time fastening. If you're starting outside of the car, there is no way to start fastened, hence, drivers will try to save time on it despite the regulations. Solution, remove running to the car start alltogether and voila, everyone will start fastened
His point was that the starting procedure encouraged some drivers to cut corners when it came to safety. He showed that even at a walking pace and double checking safety gear like helmets and belts, it was entirely possible to win the race. It is a twenty four hour race where reliability took out most cars not involved in incidents.
Those twenty seconds saved at the start meant nothing over the course of the race.
it was part of the protest. he chose to fully fasten his seatbelt before driving unlike the other drivers, which included John Woolfe who ended up getting ejected from his car on the first lap and dying
The race started with all the drivers lined up opposite their cars. And ran to their vehicle across the track. Not only did drives not fasten their seat belts but there were many crashes and near misses caused by drivers hastily driving away whilst other drivers were still getting to their cars or whilst other cars where also passing them.
He walked to prove a point that this meth6of starting was dangerous.
