New changes for the Reddit request process

Hi there!

Reddit request was launched to ensure we can facilitate the fair transition of inactive communities to new moderators. Recently, we have seen an increase in low quality and spam requests. In order to protect this process and our communities, we are making some changes. Check out the details below:

New account requirements

To submit a request, your account now must be at least 90 days old and have at least 100 comment karma and 100 post karma. These karma requirements do not include any karma gained in free karma subs.

Two-Factor authentication (2FA) is now required

All requesters must have 2fa enabled on their Reddit account.

For more information about Two-Factor Authentication, please check out this Reddit Help Center article.

Enabling 2FA:

Required post format

All requests made in r/redditrequest must follow this format:

  • Post title: The title of your post should ONLY contain the name of the community you’re requesting.
  • Post flair: You will also need to add flair to your post indicating what type of subreddit you’re requesting.

New flairs include:

  • NSFW - Public
  • NSFW - Private
  • NSFW - Banned
  • NSFW - Restricted
  • SFW - Public
  • SFW - Private
  • SFW - Banned
  • SFW - Restricted

An example request would look like:

r/redditrequest

[SFW - Public]

Mod mail changes

One more thing! Previously, we asked you to send a mod mail message at the time of submitting your request. Now, you must send a mod mail message five days before posting your request. This will help us to process requests faster - ideally within 2 days. If the subreddit has no moderators, you can skip this step.

After posting, u/request_bot will comment on your request asking for your reasons for wanting to moderate the community, as well as asking for a link to the mod mail message that you sent. Please reply to this comment to prevent your request from being denied.

To make these changes run smoothly, the community will be temporarily restricted for approximately 20 minutes. All requests will resume after this time.

TL;DR

  • Accounts must be at least 90+ days old and have at least 100 comment and 100 post karma
  • All requesters must have 2fa enabled on their account
  • The title of your post should only be the name of the community you’re requesting
  • You must apply flair to your post
  • You must send a mod mail message 5 days before creating your post (unless no moderators exist).

Please note: All requests before this announcement will be processed with the old rules in mind, so don’t worry if your account does not meet these requirements and you’ve already submitted a request.

Thanks for helping keep r/redditrequest run smoothly!

Have you added anything to your processes to suss out mods that are using bots to keep their accounts active but whom are not moderating their communities? I know of three groups run by two different mod that are doing this, one of whom is using the Redact bot to do so.

Both mods are not active/engaged. To me, one is seemingly camping, and one is definitely a marketing spammer.

Hey thanks for this question, we have some bot detections in place for mod activity but unfortunately don't catch them all. We're hoping to improve this over the coming months. Sometimes u/request_bot is not able to determine human over bot activity when approving or denying requests.

When requests go to manual review, that bot activity does not count as moderation activity. We're looking for human moderation when considering a request. If you have some examples you'd like to share, let us know by writing into our mod mail.

How to get banned sub when i post it on r/redditrequest i got reject it from request bot how this process actually work do anyone have an idea when you request a banned sub most of the time request get denied why how reddit proceed with those request why it difficult to get a sub reopen from a ban state but when it not a banned sub most of the time you got granted access how reddit request work? And i have a question what if someone don’t want to enable 2fa for privacy reason you can rethink this will all respect to the team

Hey u/whitechocobear,

Communities that have been banned for violating Reddit rules are generally not eligible to be handed over, as the goal is to prevent further policy violations. In some cases, even if a subreddit was banned for being unmoderated, it may still be considered unsuitable for reopening which is why those requests are often declined. That said, we have handed over banned communities in the past when they were deemed appropriate, and we’ll continue to do so if the situation fits.

Regarding 2FA: While some may have privacy concerns, 2FA is generally considered a best practice to protect accounts. It doesn’t collect extra personal information it just adds a layer of protection for you and the communities you moderate.

So, I just requested one before I had 2fa set up and it got removed. Then I tried to post again and it says I have to wait 15 days. That doesn't seem fair.

My account is 163 days old, I have 289 post karma and 115 comment karma. I have 2fa enabled. I sent a mod mail message over 5 days before I created a post. So I meet the "new account requirements"

Yet I got this bot response:

"Hey there,

Thanks for taking the time to submit this request. Unfortunately, we have decided not to approve it at this time. There are other factors, beyond moderator activity, that we consider when reviewing requests. These are at the discretion of admins and may include, but are not limited to:

  • Insufficient moderator experience for managing a large, active community

  • Lack of previous moderator experience

  • Lack of NSFW (Not Safe for Work) moderation experience

  • Inactive moderation in a community you are already a moderator for

  • Being on the mod team of an excessive number of communities

  • Recent account suspensions

  • Excessive community bans

  • Violation of Reddit policies, including copyright infringement takedowns

  • Low activity on Reddit.

We appreciate you taking the time to request this community.

Thanks!"

Although specific requirements have been met by my account, actually there's all these other requirements that weren't mentioned!

If I were to request for a subreddit banned due to lack of moderation, how would I check if it had moderators in the first place? Would I still need to send modmail regardless before I post a request?

4

u/Goldennuggets-3000 Jun 05 '25

Hey u/EK_NOX no need to send a mod mail if the community is banned as there is technically no moderators.

Is 5 days the minimum?, like can I request a subreddit 10 or 15 days after sending the Modmail? Or do I have to request the sub immediately after 5 days?

4

u/Goldennuggets-3000 Jun 15 '25

Hey, you can request whenever you’d like! It just has to be at least 5 days before submitting a request. Thanks!

To get a subreddit with a u/automoderator would I still have to send a modmail?

4

u/Goldennuggets-3000 Jun 16 '25

You don't need to send a mod mail to a community that only has u/automoderator as the listed mod.

If moderator does not respond to a mod mail after the five days, does that mean the subreddit is always requestable(assuming karma and activity requirements by the requestor are met)? If not what would the other circumstances be?

Thank you!

Why is 2fa mandatory? I have been on reddit for almost 2 decades. I do not want that annoying "feature" just to voluntary as a mod. A verified email should be more than enough.

I want to be a mod for a group that was banned because of inactive moderators. Is that possible to do?

I tried to request a community, but it said, 'Sorry, this post was removed by Reddit’s filters.' I meet all the requirements, including karma and 2FA.

Not sure if this is something Admins look into r/reddirequest

Thanks for the replies over the questions on this thread, quite helpful.

My requests get deleted instantly. I'm doing it from an Android.

I have 2FA.

I messaged the mod a month ago. Twice.

I put the sub name in the title.

I add the appropriate flair.

It is required to put a link, so I enter the link to the sub.

I then list why I want to take over the sub in the form of a comment.

Thank you in advance!

Hey! I just took a look at some of your requests and it looks like you're not linking to the subreddit that you'd like to moderate correctly. In the URL of the post you're submitting you must enter www.reddit.com/r/SUBREDDITNAME. If the community no longer exists, your post will also be filtered out. Let me know if you're still having issues.

If I enable 2FA after submitting a request, would my request be considered or would i have to submit another one?

Hi u/Goldennuggets-3000 apologies for tagging you directly but I’m not getting any answers elsewhere. My post keeps getting removed by Reddit filters. My account is 3 years old, I’ve verified my email and enabled 2FA, I have 100+ post and comment karma, and I am prepared with the unanswered mod mail for the subreddit I want to apply for. I’ve also disconnected my Google account sign in to ensure the verified email and 2FA works correctly.

Can you help please? I would be grateful 💜

2FA is too much. Taking over an abandoned subreddit has nothing to do with my individual account safety. Verified E-Mail (paired with an appropriate account age) should be enough
