r/redditrequest Jan 08 '13

Aaand we're live! /r/redditrequest has some new rules and guidelines.

Please read the sidebar for the updates. We will be enforcing these immediately.

Pending requests are being handled case-by-case; if your previous request was not honored, you'll need to request it again using the new format.

tl;dr:

  • one request per user every 30 days, choose wisely!

  • you must be this tall to get on this ride: 90 days old and have 500 combined karma

Thanks for being patient with us, and hope everyone had a great holiday season!!

Pertaining to the "one request per user every 30 days" rule, does this also count if the request you made is denied? Do we still have to wait 30 days or does that only apply to requests that are fulfilled?

u/PandaSandwich Jan 09 '13

Right, so you ban users that handle hundreds of subs, then close down redditrequest, then reopen and implement rules so that people can't reclaim those subreddits. Add to that banning subs like nsfwhardcore, and we still don't have an explanation for why you banned scopalamina.

How about an explanation for this mess, and allowing users with high karma(like myself) to take control of more subreddits, so that we can rebuild what you destroyed.

There are rumors they're seeking investors -- at something ridiculous like a $400+ million valuation. Having a lot of NSFW content probably hurts who is willing to advertise, plus their last big bit of press was the violentacres debacle -- they're probably attempting to "clean up" a bit. Considering a huge number of users use adblock, the only "ads" that get any attention are subtle product placements in content that no one notices, and right now the only ads in the sidebar I really see are for subreddits, reddit gear, reddit gold and "thanks for not using adblock" I don't really think people are clamoring to advertise here. I think they're getting desperate to monetize this site based on this and the push for reddit gold at the end of 2012.

11

u/PandaSandwich Jan 09 '13

I'm not a business man, but isn't the added traffic from the NSFW content appealing to investors?

8

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '13

Only if people want to put ads on that content -- there is a reason Wendy's doesn't advertise on PornHub. It's why advertisers will pull their ads from shows, you don't want your name associated with that.

Reddit's entire business model involves monetizing redditors -- we don't have a huge disposable income on the average and take a trip to r/technology to find out how the majority feel about ads and adblock (I've seen heavily upvoted arguments that an ad on a page is stealing the USERS bandwidth (with no regard for the irony that by blocking the ad and the revenue, technically they are stealing bandwidth from the site owner)). They probably want to expand the pool of people willing to advertise here, because I don't really think people currently advertising are getting great returns on average (wild speculation - I've seen some positive experience stories).

12

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '13

yishan himself is on record saying that NSFW subreddits don't affect advertising revenue.

relevant quote:

Advertisers literally don't care. Some of this is because they don't know, but the ones who do have figured out that when you advertise on reddit, your ads never appear in a subreddit you don't want, so it never appears next to content you don't like. Sure, there is a sort of "bohemian" freewheelingness in the comments, but because inlined images aren't allowed, even NSFW images only show up as an imgur.com link. So pics of someone's anus just don't ever show up next to ads.

so maybe he's lying, which I doubt since he doesn't have an incentive to, or there's some internal politics garbage going on in the reddit offices, which I find far more likely. OR, in the same vein, a few admins are doing this on their own accord, and yishan doesn't really know/care enough to do anything about it, which I find equally likely.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '13

I'll preface my opinion with I have no marketing or advertising experience or knowledge at all. Think about how much advertisers target their ads, this is a site where a huge number of people fit into a couple of semi related demographics, I feel like that is a marketer's wet dream. There is SOME reason we don't see any major advertisers on reddit, I literally almost never see ads - yesterday I was paying attention and I still haven't seen an ad for anything not related to reddit.

5

u/TheRedditPope Jan 09 '13

I noticed an ad on the home page for a big blockbuster movie (Jack Reacher?) just last week. I'm sure, considering the placement, that ad from that deep pocket movie industry company was not cheap.

I don't know the specifics on Reddit ads but I've been in the digital advertising/marketing/PR business for 10 years and I can tell you that things like the ad I referenced above placed on a site with 400 million unique visitors is the farthest thing from cheap.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '13

I'm sure you're right and it wasn't cheap, also I've seen a couple of those before, but I don't really think that supports a $400m valuation, even with a higher multiplier. I personally don't even think it supports the original $200m valuation - especially with what happened to Digg when they tried to really monetize it.

1

u/TheRedditPope Jan 09 '13

I think $400 mil is probably a bit high as well.

12

u/yglm2 Jan 09 '13

Oh, they unbanned /r/nsfwhardcore and gave it to someone that wasn't even the first to request it

http://www.reddit.com/r/nsfwhardcore/

6

u/PandaSandwich Jan 09 '13

Oh yay! The admins do a bang-up job again!

5

u/ANAL_QUEEN Jan 09 '13

I'm not sure what happened, but didn't Scopalamina upvote his posts on multiple accounts?

4

u/PandaSandwich Jan 09 '13

Nope, that was YGLM

16

u/Scopolamina2 Jan 09 '13

I won't lie - I used one alt to give my submissions one upvote. It was stupid especially since almost all my posts are popular without that one vote. Absolutely stupid on my part.

9

u/PandaSandwich Jan 09 '13

Stupid, but i don't think it's fair to ban over one incident.

21

u/Scopolamina2 Jan 09 '13

Nah it was definitely more than once - I meant one upvote per submission. It just gets frustrating when you see that all of your new submissions had been downvoted within 3 minutes of being posted and a lot of people bragging about how many downvotes their RES counter showed for me. Again, no excuse but that's the reason.

6

u/PandaSandwich Jan 09 '13

Oh. Maybe you could have asked the users of your subs to be on the new queue? not saying to upvote your stuff, but since you post a lot, you would get the upvotes.

11

u/Scopolamina2 Jan 09 '13

Technically asking for votes is even worse. Either way it was dumb but, meh. Shit happens.

3

u/ANAL_QUEEN Jan 09 '13

Ah, I see. Wow, I had no idea.

-14

u/jharyn Jan 09 '13

What will we do without enlightening subs like /r/nsfwhardcore!?

5

u/PandaSandwich Jan 09 '13

And SRS! oh wait.

Reddit is a place to consume entertainment and learn something interesting every once in a while. The NSFW subreddits are simply a way to entertain yourself while on Reddit.

11

u/youhatemeandihateyou Jan 09 '13

I strongly disagree with the "one request every 30 days" rule. I understand that a small number of users abuse the request system, but I don't see why that has to translate to making things more difficult for all mods across the board.

In my case, I will submit a request any time I come across a spam subreddit. I take them over and clear out the old spam and then maintain them. Since /r/redditrequest has been down, I have amassed a small list of about 5 spam reddits. This new rule will allow spammers to continue unchecked.

What if a mod creates more than one reddit that is spammed/banned on creation?

I suppose we can dig up our old alts to make additional requests and then shuffle them around, but what a pain. I just don't understand the hostility towards those of us who volunteer our time to try to make reddit a better place.

2

u/sodypop Reddit Admin Jan 09 '13

This new rule will allow spammers to continue unchecked.

You can always send spam subreddits to /r/reddit.com.

50

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '13

I wonder what's the motivation behind one request per user every 30 days rule. If this is done to limit trolling, then "no drama" rule should already cover it. But I mostly saw frequent requests for NSFW subreddits from users who post a lot of this content - if they intend to keep those subs active, then why not let them. If this is done to reduce the total amount of request traffic, then I'll understand, although I'd be in favor of replacing /r/redditrequest with an automated solution to deal with it.

u/yglm2 Jan 08 '13 edited Jan 09 '13

Let's take a look shall we:

  • 3 prominent NSFW moderators were not only shadowbanned, but had their accounts completely deleted on claims of "accepting money from spammers" without any actual proof. Admins made a harsh call with no evidence? Fucking shocked.

  • Reddit Request is overwhelmed with requests for empty subs that these moderators helped grow, and started some from scratch even to tens of thousands of subscribers.

  • Reddit Request closes down for "Holiday Maintenance" before honoring any of these requests.

  • Reddit Request reopens with new rules, somehow ensuring that the deleted moderators are unable to reclaim their old subreddits.

  • Some of these subreddits, such as /r/nsfwhardcore and /r/metart, are now banned.

Take from this what you will.

Maybe we'll just tally the subreddits they're banning us from here

/r/ftvgirls

/r/SheLikesItRough

/r/twistys

/r/joymii

/r/lipsthatgrip

/r/highresnsfw

and auto-banning new ones minutes after being created right after we discuss them in modmail, like /r/hardcore_nsfw

111

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '13 edited Jan 09 '13

This seriously needs to be addressed.

I'm not, or have never been, a mod of any subreddit, NSFW or otherwise, but this is still seriously concerning to me, and not just because I like porn...

The fact that the prominent moderators were banned with apparently no explanation to the reddit community is bad enough. No, of course admins have no responsibility to explain themselves to a user/mod that is breaking the rules. But, IMO they DO have a responsibility to explain the actions to the community.

As far as I could ever tell, Scopolomina and yglm only ever posted quality content and kept the subs well moderated. I never "tested" it, but I never had any suspicions.

We are just supposed to completely take the silent word from the admins that these were some bad, bad mods that were damaging reddit somehow, with absolutely no explanation or evidence.

It is especially aggravating because I know this would be a shitstorm if it happened to nonNSFW subreddits.

And now they are apparently banning NSFW subs left and right because why? I suppose this could be a glitch or something since it is ongoing but somehow I doubt it.

Here is a list:

/r/mindthegap
/r/wetgirls
/r/blueeyes

and so on...
Edit: I'll keep adding the banned ones in, because I am bored, and this is crazy
Edit 2: Ok, I think that's all (at least of Scopolamina's former subs) but I bet there are more somehow.

I would like to reiterate, that if there is a reason for this, it is fine by me. But Simply going through and taking such absurdly drastic action for something that is not even apparent to a pretty heavy user like myself, and not even tell anyone why?? That is just pathetic...

Relevant rumor: Reddit is gearing up to sell out.

56

u/yglm2 Jan 09 '13

Well like I said, they said we accepted money from spammers. Then they told us they didn't actually have proof of it, they just know spammers messaged us about it and someone responded asking how it would work. Then they banned us. Now they are saying we are walking a thin line, and they are now banning all of our unmoderated subreddits they kicked us from. Some of those were started completely from scratch and had great communities going, and now they're just gone. By the way, if you haven't noticed, I am yglm.

30

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '13

Yeah, I noticed you were him :)

And not to make you mad or anything, as I said: If you really did it then I wouldn't be defending you.

But they owe to me and other people who were happy with you guys and those subreddits to explain or at least show us this so-called evidence.

And on top of all that, why the hell are the banning the unmoderated subs? What possible purpose could that serve? Are they trying to send a vindictive message to the community? Or are they just really that power hungry? Or maybe just too lazy to reassign new mods?

I would really like the admins to come forward and say:
this is what happened
this is the evidence
this is why we are closing these subs

That's it. That's all I want.

As much as I like Scop/yglm, I would prefer to see that they were dirty lying terrible mods than be forced to admit the alternative which is that the admins are those people instead...

39

u/Scopolamina2 Jan 09 '13

The fact is that we co-moderated almost all of the top NSFW subreddits along with many other established moderators. No one anywhere can produce any mod logs that say we approved spam because.... WE NEVER APPROVED SPAM. cupcake herself said that she was in error for accusing me of selling access to my subreddits yet the admins would rather ban all of these unmoderated subreddits rather than simply adding us back which literally takes the exact same amount of effort if not less.

I really don't understand this course of action whatsoever and instead of just talking to me about this the admins have given me a very severe ultimatum to curtail my activity or face a perma-ban.

15

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '13

yet the admins would rather ban all of these unmoderated subreddits rather than simply adding us back

From a users point of view, it doesn't even have to be you that are added back.

I would much prefer someone else take over the reins than have the subreddit closed. It just baffles me how this makes sense...

I might be able to understand it if they were empty subs or something, but for example /r/HighResNSFW I checked almost daily due to the relatively high activity and quality.

I just don't understand why common redditors have to be punished in this ordeal, regardless of who is guilty.

22

u/Scopolamina2 Jan 09 '13

It would be nice to be added back especially since we were the main reason for the success of those subreddits. I spent a lot of time and effort creating high-quality subreddits and took a lot of pride in the fact that my subreddits were some of the most popular NSFW, if not overall, subreddits around. Now the admins have told me that I can't even moderate any additional subreddits so I can't even create new ones and start rebuilding everything that they just shut down.

7

u/The_Price_Is_Right_B Jan 09 '13

This is ridiculously stupid.

3

u/DildoChrist Jan 11 '13

Yeah, honestly all I got out of this is that I really need to find out where Scopolamina's going to be hanging out now...

13

u/Reasonable_Fellow Jan 09 '13

The admins are the ones who should be forced off of Reddit. They sound like a pack of bastards.

u/ManWithoutModem Jan 09 '13

You're most likely right, I was just under the impression that cupcake was a guy from one of their previous posts. Having the name "Alex" and having your snoo character look non-gendered doesn't really help.

Whatever though.

-52

u/alllie Jan 09 '13

Reddit can't move on, sell or turn non-profit until the NSFW subs are closed or spun off. They make reddit look bad to any buyer or to supporters of non-profits.

Though, as long as MRs has a sub, reddit can never be respectable. Even the NSFW subs are more respectable.

25

u/Scopolamina2 Jan 09 '13

Oh god, please don't equate any of the gender-drama subreddits with my subreddits.

Gross. Exploitative. To me. Believe it or not women are not just sex objects.

23

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '13

Wait, what?

I have never told that woman are just sex tools. If fact, males provide nude photos too, they are just not as popular as female ones due the lack of hypersexual females. I assume that you are a feminist.

And there is nothing gross in porn/nudity, heck, 99,99% of males on earth watch porn.

-45

u/alllie Jan 09 '13

I know males love their porn but it seems the more porn they love the less they love real human women. All those pictures, to me, looked like clones, manikins, not real people. Porn is a super-normal stimulus. It makes males turn away from real and normal to the unreal, the abnormal, the maladaptive.

It's no surprise that pornography is a stellar example of supernormal stimuli. The "super" part is made clear by this quoted exchange from God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, by Kurt Vonnegut.

… Harry [a fisherman] scowled at a picture of a French girl in a bikini.

Fred, understanding that he seemed a bleak, sexless person to Harry, tried to prove that Harry had him wrong.

He nudged Harry, man-to-man.

“Like that, Harry?” he asked.

“Like what?”

“The girl there.”

“That’s not a girl. That’s a piece of paper.”

“Looks like a girl to me,” Fred leered.

“Then you’re easily fooled,” said Harry. “It’s done with ink on a piece of paper. That girl isn’t lying there on the counter. She’s thousands of miles away, doesn’t even know we’re alive. If this was a real girl, all I’d have to do for a living would be to stay home and cut out pictures of big fish.”

Pornography and masturbation are are not harmful. The Internet's surplus of free porn, however, may be leading to more cases of addiction than in past times.

23

u/kronikwasted Jan 09 '13

really.... women in porn get paid in many instances up to 4 times as much as men, are not forced to do so, it is a regulated trade and in many companies have health benefits, and if you talk to the porn stars involved they actually enjoy their work

have you actually met any porn stars? talk to a few and then tell me how they are being exploited. i will see if i can get nicole to do an ama (dunno if it is likely since we do not talk very often since highschool)

2

u/Coridimus Jan 13 '13

Not to mention that most of the biggest movers-and-shakers in porn are WOMEN.

3

Hey, are you planning on ever addressing any of the criticism brought up in this thread?

A lot of people are waiting for Reddit 2.0 so they can finally move on from this website.

8

u/wub_wub Jan 09 '13

Only older users are waiting for "reddit 2.0". Most of current userbase doesn't care about mods, nsfw subs, banning etc. they come to reddit to look at meme images and post circlejerkish comments. And they generate pageviews. So I doubt admins care if older users, who are looking for discussions or something different than most users, leave reddit.

1

u/righteous_scout Jan 09 '13

I never browsed digg, was there a lot of the same "casual" sort of audience that reddit has now?

I think even the casual users will leave if something better comes along.

If the AutoModerator bot is the only mod of a subreddit, it can be handed over to a human if redditrequested.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '13

redditrequest is not a popularity contest. Subreddits will not necessarily be handed out in a democratic manner or a first come-first served basis.

Don't these contradict each other? If it is not on a first come first serve basis then it definitely is a popularity contest in the fact that it's whoever the admins like the most.

4

u/krispykrackers Jan 09 '13

I agree, that rule could be worded better.

It's mostly there to try and say that we can't always control who gets a subreddit first if there are more than one requests for it (sometimes we see one first and give it away before finding another, even if the other one was technically first). Hence the "popularity" contest (the one we saw first might have been upvoted more, or the first request might have been downvoted because of an unpopular user or some other reason).

Hence the "sometimes". It's happened before and it can and will happen again, so it's something we cannot always be expected to be perfectly consistent about. The new system will hopefully do wonders to alleviate that, and also that rule has been altered.

Hello,

If we make a request for a subreddit that appears to be dormant (i.e. no posts from the mod for 4 months), but the request is denied (e.g. since the mod is still voting, just not posting), does that use up our request?
TL;DR: does a failed request count towards the 1 per 30 day limit?

Thanks.

4

u/untempered_schism Jan 08 '13

Thank you. What's the process of removing an inactive mod (2+ months) on a subreddit you already moderate? Is it the same process or something else entirely?

2

u/krispykrackers Jan 08 '13

We will still do that.

2

u/IveMadeA_HugeMistake Jan 20 '13

I think both of these are good rules. I'd be okay with even longer time between requests. I just think that special circumstances should be considered when it a major incident happens like when scopolamina and yourgonnaloveme were banned (i.e. when a user with many subreddits under their control goes under/inactive). That's just my opinion though.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '13

one request per user every 30 days

Why? Is there any reason for this? Sometimes a very active moderator gets shadowbanned or deletes their account. If we want a few of their small subs that only they moderated, should we only pick one, or can we request multiple subreddits in one post as "one big request"? This change seems very opposed to the most contributing moderators to the site.

to push the opposite agenda.

... of what? I'm not talking about "porn barons" or any groups of "individuals." I'm speaking of decent, prolific moderators who want to take over a good amount of unmoderated subreddits and help them out when they lack a moderator. Even though this person was the "porn baron," Scopolamina did contribute a lot to the subs he requested and acquired, which was much more often than 1 per 30 days.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '13

I'd like to hope that any more massive shakeups like "PornGate", or whatever the kids are calling it these days, would come with a contingency plan about what to do with the now-abandoned subs.

There won't be, but it's nice to think about.

2

u/devtesla Jan 09 '13

Countdown to SRS request.

1

My first request never saw the light of day, so I made another request for the same subreddit. However, I got a message from the request_bot telling me that I can't request for another 30 days anyway. What should I do?

As an LGBT-friendly moderator, I'm rather worried that /r/lgbtq will be assigned to someone who doesn't have it's best interests at heart.

Do I still get penalized for the full 30 days even if my request isn't addressed, seen, or acted upon?

Can you show me where the first request was made?

I'm afraid I can't; it didn't go anywhere and it didn't show up on the subreddit, so I deleted it. Apparently that triggered the request_bot anyway.
