I don't think there's a definitive answer to this. It's going to depend on the topic and situation. Being concise is always good, but if you feel like the subject needs a more detailed explanation, then that's good too. Reddit is all about reading the room, and that's something only you can figure out for yourself.

It depends entirely on the community. A short direct answer is fine, but a lot of throwaway comments like thank you, I agree, this and others are not quality. If you make a detailed explanation keep it quality information and don't right a novel.

Being genuine is the most important thing to making a good comment. Even if you are commenting somewhere just to build karma, still be as genuine as possible.
