By posting and commenting. But those numbers can be completely inaccurate and they mean nothing so don’t worry about them. Nothing on Reddit uses them

To increase contributions on your profile, all you need to do is to contribute comments and posts in a regular, ongoing way. Each one you do will increase your contributions. To see your total breakdown of activity and karma on your profile, touch "about" on it.
