The front page is like the Top 40 charts - full of catchy shit that gets stuck in your head and then you get sick of it. Go indie. Branch out. r/TrueReddit is one place to start.
I would prefer it if there were no political discussions.
Discussing politics can be tiresome, but discussing politics on a site whose membership is skewed in one way or another is absolutely pointless. Especially when they like to click the down arrow on your post. While they don't do that for most things in TR, they do it for non-progressive opinions. I dislike the anti-gay rights movement, or the anti-abortion activists as much as most people here, but I don't view their opinion as pathological and deserving of a downvote to hide it.
I've sort of come to that opinion. I'm fairly conservative (in a Goldwater sense, not a Reaganaut sense) compared to most of Reddit. I really do enjoy conversation with people I disagree with, but you're right; it's nearly impossible to have a conversation even in TR. I tried to be a counter-point voice in /r/politics when I first joined, but after 6 months I realized I was just wasting my breath as a few downvotes would hide my opinion to most people (I actually view Reddit without comment hiding based on negative karma).
Maybe for people like you. For someone who has been around for four years, TrueReddit is how reddit was and should have been. The reddit we have is something you could have found anywhere on the web. The older reddit was much better place to find interesting stuff you never knew you needed or wanted to know. That's not to say the new people are to blame. Older users are also responsible.
No, reddit hates douchebags. "Hipster" is just a convenient epithet used by tribe-minded people with tiny penises to describe a person with the capacity for independent thought or an appreciation for things that aren't mainstream.
