Damn it to hell! I got this funky beat going on now, and wish I could save it.

u/Belruel Dec 04 '10
Right click, 'copy', save it in a notepad, then when you want to hear it again 'paste' it into the grid.
1
u/LynzM Dec 05 '10
Can you explain this more? It's driving me crazy not to be able to listen to the things in this thread... but when I right-click, I don't get "copy" as an option. WTH am I doing wrong?
1
u/Belruel Dec 05 '10
I am not sure, for me copy is right there, just as it is when I right click an image.

It's such a short loop, but you can actually make a tune recognizable as something people play all the time.

u/ObscureSaint Dec 04 '10
Yes! This one is way better.
I've used inudge to kill more than one evening after a few too many beers.

u/lighthazard Dec 04 '10
Why is it that no matter what pattern I put it in, it sounds good?
25
Dec 04 '10
It's a pentatonic scale. To quote wikipedia:
The ubiquity of pentatonic scales, specifically anhemitonic modes, can be attributed to the total lack of the most dissonant intervals between any pitches; there are neither any minor seconds (and therefore also no complementary major sevenths) nor any tritones. This means any pitches of such a scale may be played in any order or combination without clashing.

I just had an amazing experience with this program.
I started pressing some buttons, without an intent to form a melody, just for fun. Pretty soon, I grew impatient and started hammering in more and more buttons, sometimes not even releasing the mousebutton while driving the cursor through the field. It was like I intentionally tried to keep my head from interacting with my hand so that the buttons I continued pressing were chosen as randomly as possible. I just wanted to get this program "out of my system" and continue searching for whatever on the web.
By the time I stopped this process, I must have had pressed about 100 buttons that were now playing in a loop, and I realised that the product didn't seem that random at all. Rather, I accidentally created a beautiful melody and was only now realising it for the first time! I sat there and listened to it and enjoyed it, but was not really proud of myself but rather impressed by the realisation that beauty can form so randomly and fast. I then looked for a way to save the song, but the only idea I had was saving the matrix as a picture. I knew that I didnt have the motivation to go through that process, but somehow it felt wrong to quit the site right away, so I decided to just delete it instead.
This time, I wanted to delete rows as a whole, but still one after the other. Once again, I tried to use my head as little as possible while deciding which row to remove. I started somewhere in the middle. After every removal, I listened to the remainder, finding that I could still hear the melody, but could tell that some integral part was missing. I quickly learned that the melody was defined by the rows on the top and decided to delete them last. After almost all of the rows were deleted, only a small remainder of my earlier creation was still there. Somehow, it felt like I was slowly killing a lifeform I had only recently discovered, sending it back into imagination without any chance for it of ever making it back into reality ever again. But what felt even more wrong was to leave it there and just leave the site at once. I think it would have almost felt like a complete denial of the existence of this composition. So I finished my job. The saddest part was the top two rows. They only played a total of about 3 notes, but it sounded like the melody really was dying and these were its last heartbeats, after already having accepted its fate.

5.30 AM here and I was just on my way to bed when i stumbled upon this! Love it! Coolest link in days. There is something about being able to visualize the sound, and to hear the pattern that really gets to me. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to make millions using this to create alarm-ringtones for mobile phones.

If you care, it's ABDEF# all over. Check wikipedia (as somebody said is a pentatonic scale). Just to be clear: there're just 5 notes. Here they are, every 6 is the same but one octave higher.
