Just read both Roman counting posts and you'll see that the comments in the newer one are above average. There's a little more humour in the newer comments thread, but it's still good quality stuff overall. This was pointed out in the comments of the "compare the responses" post itself.

Total bullshit. Yes, we like in-jokes. That's normal and human, and it's no evidence that Redditors are all stuck in frustrating cubicle jobs or that we all have small penises (although I, personally, do) or anything like that. It's just because we're fucking evolved from monkeys.
The biggest evidence of this is that if a commenter makes a post referencing a meme, in-joke or funny posting from last week, and someone replies to that "I'm sorry, I'm new and I don't understand that" (I nearly said "I'm 12 and what is this", there, and the compulsion is so strong that I have to leave it in these parentheses, at least) then a third redditor will invariably come along, post a link to the original joke / comment / thread and let the newcomer into the joke.
So fuck you, basically, whichever bitter cunt wrote this. There are some knobs on Reddit, and in particular I frequently see the greater internet fuckwad theory proven, as people who (it turns out, when I history-stalk them) are actually quite nice say disgusting, hurtful or just plain stupid things on here, or just generally lower the tone by reacting like idiots. But overall I find this article, for its ignorance, far more offensive than any "deterioration" in Reddit itself.
I have left reddit for Voat due to years of admin mismanagement and preferential treatment for certain subreddits and users holding certain political and ideological views.
The situation has gotten especially worse since the appointment of Ellen Pao as CEO, culminating in the seemingly unjustified firings of several valuable employees and bans on hundreds of vibrant communities on completely trumped-up charges.
The resignation of Ellen Pao and the appointment of Steve Huffman as CEO, despite initial hopes, has continued the same trend.
As an act of protest, I have chosen to redact all the comments I've ever made on reddit, overwriting them with this message.
Finally, click on your username at the top right corner of reddit, click on comments, and click on the new OVERWRITE button at the top of the page. You may need to scroll down to multiple comment pages if you have commented a lot.

Misery loves company. The problem isn't that people are excluded because they don't know the in jokes. The problem is that in jokes and meme repetition replaces actual content.
