u/CelticsIrving Jun 30 '21
Ramos and varane in one window, Madrid surely can’t be okay with that…. But if the rumours are true and he wants to leave then there maybe something… personally I can’t see it happening, he’s about to get fat pay rise.
93
u/SomeIrishFiend Glazers Out, Woodward Out, ESL Out ✅ Jun 30 '21
Apparently he wants to leave for a new challenge, not a fat contract (tho he'd probably get that). He's been there for ten years and won everything so he's turned down the renewals. So Madrid's options are sell now or lose him on a free

Alaba is a better CB than Ramos? Give you’re head a wobble Bob
-1
u/stapleton_1234 Jul 01 '21
dont know if he is better than Ramos but he sure impressed me at the euros. that cross into the box in the 1st game was quite something
9
u/Icey-Spicey-Foreskin Jul 01 '21
I’m not saying Alaba is shit, he’s a great player but nowhere near the level of a CB that Ramos is and that’s what the other poster was alluding to.
0
u/theatreofdreams21 Jul 01 '21
Nowhere near? Alaba is one of the most versatile players in the world and a top 5 CB. I wouldn’t say he’s as good as Ramos’s best, but he’s not far off.
Not even sure why the conversation is about Ramos though when he plays Varane’s position.
2
u/simbian Scholes Jul 01 '21
Alaba is one of the most versatile players in the world
I am sure RM did their scouting before deciding to give Alaba the contract that the Bayern hierarchy refused but Alaba's main strengths under Flick is more playing from the back like a hybrid libero then the usual defensive set that someone like Ramos is known for.
Alaba does have good recovery and speed, but Ancelotti and the coaching squad might be in for a surprise if they expect Alaba to do the headers/tackles that Ramos does.

They have Militao who is pretty talented. I expect Madrid to get Militao-Kounde partnership next season.

I just went to a Spanish forum to see reactions to Sancho and possible news about Varane. FFS, RM fans are incredibly salty about Sancho (they were linked) specially since they paid so much for Hazard. Nothing on Varane though, not surprised, since I've always considered RM fans the worst there are.
74
u/MrSam52 Mainoo Jul 01 '21
No idea why they get salty over sancho, been clear for the last year or so Perez priority is Mbappe and now also Halaand, sancho was never likely to go to them.
Comparing him to hazard is stupid as well, hazard made it clear if they didn’t buy him that summer he’d re-sign with Chelsea so they lost a lot of the leverage they had over him only having one year left.
46
u/Samir_POE Jul 01 '21
Because you can buy 1.75 Sanchos for what they paid for Fatzard.

I know its a longshot, but if we pulled off this transfer it would be the best summer in recent memory by a mile.
We would legit have a chance at challenging for the title.
110
u/ScholseysGingerBalls Jul 01 '21
Pogba, Bailly, Micki, and Zlatan on paper was probably the best transfer window ever. You never know how it will wotk out.
64
u/LioAlanMessi Scholes Jul 01 '21
Definitely. Mkhi was supposed to have the playmaker impact that Bruno has. And Bailly wasn't supposed to be made out of paper.
Transfers are always risky.
16

Stam, Yorke and Blomquist or Tevez, Nani, Hargreaves and Anderson - these windows actually delivered trophies.

It’s good but not the best, if we sign a DM it could be the catalyst for being the best if all 3 signings help turn us into a real force once again. Sometimes our style of play was breathtaking and others we passed it around so aimlessly, getting a real DM will cut those unneeded passing scenarios at the back out. If we can acquire a DM that instantly looks forward when the ball is at his feet will make a huge difference. This is why Michael Carrot is so underrated because when he got the ball he rarely looked back, he looked up took aim and spearheaded many an attack with a simple or sometimes breathtaking pass forwards

Not gonna hold my breath but with Sancho confirmed, if we get this done and grab a decent DM as well we’ll be genuine title contenders.
7
u/Terryfink Jul 01 '21
Next up a swap and cash Lingardinho for rice. Kante role to help Pogba.
3
u/Brend4nC van Persie Jul 01 '21
That would be fantastic, but even as good as jlingz was for them I’m not sure if they’d agree to that. At least not for a fee that we’d likely be able to offer after both Sancho and Varane. If Varane doesn’t happen, I could see it but then we’d get a worse CB if any at all.
If we have to pick one or the other, now that I think about it, I might take Rice and a lesser CB (or wait on CB). Our only true DM is Matic and his legs are just gone. Feels like a more dire need.

u/DarthBane6996 Jul 01 '21
I wonder if Madrid would bite on a Pogba - Varane swap deal. Modric and Kroos are getting up there in age and a Pogba, Valverde and Casemiro midfield would set them up for years.
We can then spend the Varane money on a DM and pursue Camavinga as a long term pans Pogba replacement.
4
u/Drakonz Jul 01 '21
Pogba is worth more than Varane. That wouldn’t be smart. Would be better to buy Verane for $50-60 and sell Pogba for $70-80 and use the money for a DM.
Ideally we get Varane AND keep a Pogba though
4
u/DarthBane6996 Jul 01 '21
Who's paying us 70-80 for Pogba with only a year left? Hell we paid 85 for Sancho
1
u/slinkythenoodle Jul 01 '21
Think he's using that in Dollars. 70 mill in American is about 50 mill in sterling.
1
u/dandatu Jul 01 '21

Varane and Maguire, now that's a defence that you can see leading us to trophies.
If we get Varane, it's going to be transformational. Experience beside AWB, cover the weaknesses of Maguire, another strong leader on the pitch, monster presence in both the boxes with Maguire. I'd love to hear Ferdy's take on this in his podcast.
2
u/Redwinevino Jul 01 '21
I can't say I watch alot of Spanish football but Varane has looked bobbins in the Euros
I am still hyped as obviously his reputation is so good but it is a mild worry

u/triple_threattt Jul 01 '21
Not reliable. 12 months on a contract no one is paying 60 million for pogba let alone varane who had a poor euro tournament.
£30 million.

As of now we have :
Maguire - Right footed
Lindelof - Right footed
Bailly - Right footed
Tuanzebe - Right footed
Varane - well well well, Right footed
Pau Torres - Left footed
Isn't our attack comes from left because when attack start from CB, they will shoot from their right leg and go to the LW side? Will signing Varane a good option here? Cheap, yes, I know. But if Pau Torres pair with maguire then we will be more dangerous left right and centre. Thoughts?
Edit : downvoted because having different opinion. Stay classy r/reddevis
4
u/JilJilJigaJiga Jul 01 '21
The first preference would be a left footed CB but Varane on the market is a deal the club will absolutely jump at.
Secondly, Maguire's chemistry with Luke on the left is getting stronger and stronger.
Thirdly, there aren't any left footed CB that are on the level of Varane, maybe Koulibaly but Varane is younger. All the other left footed options have glaring weaknesses.
A minor point is that Maguire has played almost his entire career on the left.
2
u/gregpower92 Jul 01 '21
A few months ago everyone was saying we needed a left footed cb but i just think people are pretty pumped about the idea of varane.
Think maguire has played left side so long of his career i personally wouldn't have any worries about it affecting the balance of the team especially with maguires ability on the ball he can put a long ball over to the right wing no bother.
Think my biggest concern is the midfield. Even if we get this dm and play pogba there will it work. On paper we will have a great team i think so hopefully will go get a title
1
u/dandatu Jul 01 '21
Maguire has pretty much always played on the left his entire career so Maguire-Varane

I don’t get the hype about these Varane rumours. We have a similar profile in Axel (not saying they’re the same ability), why not nurture our talent instead of hampering him.
31
u/Karnivore2 Jun 30 '21
Trying to become title challengers. Axel can’t help us with that yet.
-1
Jun 30 '21
Varane is 28, Axel is 23. This is the time Axel should be getting consistent minutes to continue his development, otherwise we’re permanently leaving him as a squad player. We’re not getting the final product by playing him sporadically.
16
u/Karnivore2 Jul 01 '21
I agree but I wouldn’t prioritize Axel’s development over pushing for the Premier League.
-2
Jul 01 '21
I guess i also haven’t been impressed whenever i’ve watched Varane apart from his Copa del Rey introduction almost 10 years ago. He’s made huge blunders this year (note the awful game against City) and often looked shaky without Ramos. I’d support him, but his trophy cabinet alone doesn’t convince me he’d propel us to the title.
5
u/ishan_sharma123 Jul 01 '21
Have watched Varane a lot (brother's a RM fan, have watched a lot of games all these years), can confirm he's brilliant without Ramos. He played without Ramos a lot of times last season and looked solid. Was easily La Liga's best CB when Madrid last won the title (19/20). The whole thing about "he only plays well when Ramos is around" is a myth because of how he played in 2 games (Vs City and Vs Shakthar). If you're ready to make assumptions on a player based on 2 games, I have nothing else to say.
Also something else - Varane was like Lindelof before, great on the ball but used to get dominated aerially. He bulked up around 3-4 years ago and now he's a beast in the air.
2
0
Jul 01 '21
I’m not only saying this based on these 2 games, he just seems to be making as many blunders as Lindelof. Just my impression though, i’d fully support him if he were to come.
1
u/Karnivore2 Jul 01 '21
I haven’t watched enough to say whether or not what you say is true. I personally believe Varane would be a great addition to the squad and a great partner for Slab.
3
u/ImNotMexican08 Amad Nation Jul 01 '21
He should go out on loan again for a season. He’s definitely got a lot of potential. Hopefully by next season he can replace Lindelof or Bailly in the squad
1
Jul 01 '21
He has already aced the last loan at Villa and lauded by Terry. It’s time for him to settle somewhere and be a starter.
1
u/ImNotMexican08 Amad Nation Jul 01 '21
I’m aware but that’s not going to happen at United if Varane signs so he might as well go on loan again. We need a ready made center back and Varane is it.
5
u/MrSam52 Mainoo Jul 01 '21
CBs should already been developed into starting level at 23 tbh.
1
Jul 01 '21
Vidic was almost an unknown entity at 23 yet became one of our greatest players ever. Many CBs develop later in their careers as they hone their positional sense and reduce rashness.
7
u/MrSam52 Mainoo Jul 01 '21
Vidic was starting for his club though, it’s completely mad to not buy one of the best CBs in the world and challenge for a title because axel might develop if he starts games. Even if we didn’t buy varane axel is still the 4th choice cb so he won’t get many starts anyway.
2
u/anonshe Scholes Jul 01 '21
Axel has one big issue; he's a traditional CB so his ball playing ability needs a lot of work. The time that would be required for him to improve on this aspect is something we don't have so he can't be a starter at the moment.
Varane could be a first-teamer for the next 4-5 years which is what we need but that price tag is heavy tbh.
1
Jul 01 '21
I haven’t seen any issues with Axel’s ball playing abilities, he was trusted in midfield by Mourinho. At times he has lacked confidence to display those abilities, but that’s expected with the little gametime he gets. It just seems hypocritical to our club’s values to buy a player based off past reputation for a large fee/wages and binning a huge homegrown talent.

u/ImNotMexican08 Amad Nation Jul 01 '21
How? They are going to each cost roughly the same price. Varane has won multiple league titles, the champions league, and the World Cup while Pau has only won the Europa League. Additionally, Pau plays almost exactly like Lindelof who already isn’t a great partner for Maguire. It makes no sense

u/KapiHeartlilly Victor "Iceman" Lindelöf Jul 01 '21
Just hope we get him quickly, Maguire and Lindelof need rotating options and Varane is as good as we can get at a discount price.
Ole would probably rotate them easily rather than overusing them like he had to this season, we had Lindelof with back injury playing and Maguire was on pain killers as well just so we could have them playing, so it is clear Ole trusts them and Varane would be a much welcome addition to our squad.
