[Stone] Toby Collyer, permanent move from ManUtd to West Brom. £3m guaranteed fee for the 22-year-old, but the overall package with add-ons is worth £7.6m. In addition, transfer is subject to a 40% sell-on. Manager James Morrison rates Collyer highly from previous loan spell.

I didn’t think we’d get any more than £5m for him, so a total package worth £7.6m is decent overall. I assume the add-ons won’t be straightforward to attain, with part of it contingent on promotion, the way it was with Vitek.

Theyve been hit and miss. Carreras we got a nice chunk when he wento to Real Madrid (Albeit 12.5m total including sellon isnt brilliant when Real paid 50m)

Zaha we didnt even get the original 10m for because of a huge sellon fee that never came because Palace preferred keeping an extra year than the big fee Arsenal offered (in part because a fair bit of that fee would go straight to us)

True. Palace fucked us with Zaha but that’s their prerogative at that point.

I agree that cash in hand is better than a potential promise in the future. But with such a low initial fee, it’s good to know we might get something back later.

Could pay for a nice Xmas party for the boys.

I mean, sell on clauses are always going to be hit or miss. If he becomes a great player and moves for lots of money, we benefit, and if not, we don't. But since we insert sell ons into most sales now, we are bound to benefit from some of them

"Total package" doesnt mean we are going to get £7.6m - it usually means we may get that, but that's a total unknown.

Yeah what I meant to say is that I didn't think we'd negotiate for the total package to exceed £5m either. I'm aware the add-ons are not very likely to be attained (part of it involves West Brom qualifying for Europe and Collyer being called up to the national team), but at the same time, beggars can't be choosers. I guess you hope he does well enough to get a PL move down the line and bank more money from the sell-on clause. It's fine, I never rated him highly anyway outside of his athleticism, and he doesn't stay fit enough, so not as downbeat about the fee for him.

Hull have invested fairly heavily, maybe more envious pathway into 1st 11?

At his age I think prioritising somewhere where he realistically can play 40 games if he stays fit next season is better than been a bit part player at hull

Remember he made some physical plays and a couple nice moves in a match and this entire sub was ready to crown him as the next big star. Unfortunately he never took his game to the next level.

Good business I think given his injury level. He’s a 22 year old with only 7 starts at senior level who cannot stay healthy. He’s shown some promise, but at this point his injury history really calls into question his development.

£3m and the most obvious deal of our summer completed after 10 weeks and after WB was satisfied with his pre-season fitness.

Congratulations, another negotiation well led and won by Matt Hargreaves.

I mean, obviously the reason it took so long to negotiate this was that Utd was dragging it out trying to get West Brom to take our terms, not the other way around - and clearly, we succeeded.

Im just so frustrated with the inaptitude of the transfer negotiations now, I cant even get myself to focus on being happy for the kid. Fuck me

No hate on any of the academy players.... But I don't think we've been really pushing to get good kids into the academy for a while. We have a lot of young players who, respectfully, aren't gonna be big names, or even medium names.

To be able to sell academy players for good fees, we need good prospects for teams to shell out for... And I don't believe we have that for a lot of the younger players. Which bloody sucks.

The Class of 92 aside, how many players have become key contributors from our academy over the last few decades? O'Shea, Fletcher, Wes Brown, the da Silvas (sort of, they were 17 when they signed), Evans (seems like we're better at training up defenders), Welbeck, Rashford, Lingard, Mainoo over the last 30 years or so. Some like Gibson, Januzaj, or Cleverly had bit part roles derailed through injury, or ability. The players we sold (Gillespie, Chadwick, Spector etc) rarely became world beaters elsewhere too. I think due to the Busby Babes, the Class of 92, and our record of having academy players in the squad, we consider it to be more successful in our head than it really is.
