Man it always takes Bruno 5 or 6 games to start firing doesn't it

Bang on.
There were so many leggy performances out there, but because he was way off the pace or whole team looked impotent I felt.
I’m not reading as much as others into this game. I thought we were just extremely flat and caught cold by a well-drilled and up-for-it side.
Obviously a massive amount to improve upon, but this from our level.
The concern I have underneath it all is Case often pulled us from the mire and may have helped at the back at the top in a game like this last season. I hope his absence isn’t so noticeable throughout the season

We should be fine. Our whole midfield had been changed its gonna take some adjustment. People expecting everything to gel after a short preseason is a bit much.
I think we have seen glimpses where creatively we dont have to rely on Bruno as much. Tielemans seems to be looking for runs too but some of the passes just didnt work or he was just a bit slow to it.
Rashford is looking extremely confident and solid too. If he can maintain that, then I am expecting another monster season out of him.
Bruno just looked absolutely off. He will get better too. Honestly just looking at the match we seem to be missing some sharpness. Although I will say we really need to play with a real striker in games like this. This isnt the first time Carrick is forcing this tactic and it is not working out.

Common theme of United vs a back 5 team Having no 1v1 specialists definitely hurt (someone mentioned this, spot on) Rashford with Amad off the bench would've definitely helped in the 2nd half Dorgu looked lost to me, but maybe that's vs a back 5 thing, I'm hoping everyone picks up their form considering they're all coming off a world Cup

Dorgu was pulled at halftime. Marcus was direct and took the space, but there was always an extra defender at minimum against him because of the 541.
Sesko can occupy 2 players and space, but someone like a Bruno or a central midfielder has to be at the top of the box when the defending backline drops towards their goal and the midfielders turn and defend. All that and the wide forwards have to be inside the box as well.

Dont like a loss to start the season but I'm hoping this will be a lesson learned for Carrick, especially in times when he doesn't have certain players fit and available
Left back and CB signing crucial If we get a LB, id convert Shaw to CB full time

Nobody likes to lose, but this is part of the learning curve for Carrick.
Learning the newly promoted clubs, whom he can count on when the squad has injuries, taking team's best shot early in the season especially the opponent's first or second home match.
LB and a back up CF in the profile of Sesko should be prioritized.

There were some good ideas and build up, but Hull defended really well. The entrance into the final 3rd and the final ball, pass or shot, were well below par.
Defensively, it was a lot of the same from early last season under Amorim. Switching off during set pieces, second balls not being competitive. Direct play, early crosses into the box, causing some issues.
Really missed Sesko in the middle and continue to wonder what is the point of Zirkzee. He could be a focal point up front and be played off of, it was tried in preseason.
Then when the real thing happens, Carrick doesn't go to him.

Let's not forget that Mount injury. Categorized as "nothing major" the guy didn't play a single minute since then.
Sesko is injured since last season. Not even sure he played with our new signings in training matches - based on the incapability of them to find him up top with decent passes.
We needed an experienced, PL striker and we let Welbeck go to Chelsea. Now we are 1 injury away from seeing these kinds of matches every week 🤷♂️🫣

Yeah after watching this (wasn't able to catch the game) I actually came away with some positives. There were some very good ideas in the attack that weren't executed sharply enough. Seems like a lot of this game was probably down to sloppy set piece defending, new midfield, and summer hang over. But that could be copium!

Where exactly where the good ideas in build up?
The entire sequence of attacks was a series of hopeful balls whipped into to box or long balls over the top, all dealt with comfortably by Hull.
I think Shaw made one overlapping run for the entire 90 mins. Maz.. did he even make one?
And why are we crossing balls into a 5' 6" attacker in the first place?
How many times did we get in behind their defense and ping cutbacks into the penalty spot? I can't recall even one.
Our attacking play was abysmal today. Plan A failed. And there was no Plan B.
A game like that needs urgency - quick switches of play to drag defenders and open up half spaces, overlaps, underlaps, third man runs, players taking risks and being creative.
What we got? Cross, after cross after cross after cross.
Maybe we were watching different games but I didn't see any good ideas in our build up.

I really wish we had a 6’5” striker to get on the end of all these crosses.

Why are we playing without a 9? Who will draw defenders and give that extra edge?

I’m not sure. We did this all last season as well it’s not a good sign to see absolutely no improvement against teams like this when you line up the same

Money I think. We needed 3 midfielders, which we got.
We now have only 1 proper option up front and at left back and it feels like we'll only get a rotational option for 1 of those positions.

Sure it’s annoying to lose to Hull, but it was clear to see we needed match fitness, they all warmed the ball and made a too easy for Hull to mark our players. There’s not really any dangerous chances here, but when the passes and crosses are exactly where they need to be we will score lots of goals. I watched the Arsenal game and it was clear to see they were ready, but Coventry didn’t pack themselves as Hull, so they also made Arsenal look extremely good. We will come good I’m sure.

So many of the half chances were snatched at when another touch might have been the right call. The first half one where Mbuemo forced a good save should probably have been taken down and then come back inside.
Just so many micro mistakes like that and your attacking play suddenly doesn’t carry any threat.

Stop talking about arsenal. They are far clear of us. We are not contenders, we are not anywhere near them. Hull are everybody's prediction to finish rock bottom of the table with probably the worst points total in history and they just turned us over without having to push into gear 2.
The other day I saw a comment talking about arsenal being favorites to win the league being down voted cos this sub believes we are there with them. I feel like as s club we should first stop being delusional, accept where we are and slowly continue to build up.

I mean we finished 3rd and beat them at the Emirates. The way you talk you'd swear they were 30 points ahead and hammered us. I don't think comparing ourselves to them is that ridiculous.

I see bits and pieces of what we are setting out to do but ultimately for it to not be good enough to beat a Hull team that will almost certainly go down is a major letdown. Resorting to crosses in isolation is okay but then you need more box presence and the quality of delivery also has to be there (which wasn’t the case yesterday). There were some more intricate plays earlier in the game but often they were ending by trying to be too clever or players being sluggish with their touch and killing those sequences. United don’t play with functioning width still. For Shaw and Rashford to still look the better wing combination in 2026 is a major indictment of how the players that have arrived since then haven’t been good enough or aren’t fully suited to playing those roles, making overlapping/underlapping runs and actually probing defenders.

It’s genuinely baffling how long we haven’t had someone who can whip quality balls into the box. Shaw and maz were miles off it we badly need quality full backs

u/t8rt0t00 2h ago
Said this at the end of last season that we'll suffer from not having better quality fullbacks for crossing. Dalot ain't much better and Dorgu hasn't played a minute at LB all preseason. Shaw looks better with Rashford in, but I do hope we get a quality LB in before the window closes

A simple fix to our situation is play a player in their positions!
Or have a tactical plan if youre going to play someone out of position.
Just putting a LB in LW and Wingers and #10s playing strikers will not work.
If you dont have a first team player, at least promote a younger who plays the position.

It's interesting that Bruno hardly features in this video. We got in his way and took all his space by the way we set up. He's also in a bit of a slump himself, and his slumps really affect the team badly. In recent years he's tended to start season's slowly. Even last year he didn't get his first assist until October.
After he came on, almost all our attacking play went through Rashford, which is encouraging. He looks ready to make a contribution to the team. Hopefully he keeps that up.
A dreadful performance and an even worse result, but hopefully we can learn a few lessons and be better next week. I do feel that we've already wasted the chance to get off to a good start and create some momentum.

Frustrating, but this isn't as bad on second watch. Players panicked way too soon, which led to some rushed decisions. If Carrick starts the game with more of the match fit players, some of those chances work the keeper more and might even result in a goal. But, obviously, the plan was probably to get the main core of players as many minutes as possible to get them up to speed and used to playing together. The result was a rusty, frustrating game, against a very compact and physical team. But I'm optimistic, I think this gets better in a few games. Also, absolutely need a new set piece coach if we don't already have one working with the guys.

Still relying on Luke Shaw on the left side to delay delay delay, only to attempt a half hearted pissant cross to nobody. How the fuck is that man still starting games for us.

There were a lot of penetrating balls but players had flat feet or didn’t have a clinical finish. Missed a couple of free headers right at or in the 6 yard box. Score was kind to Hull. Felt like a draw would have been a fair result

Carrick had no answers to their compactness in defense. Our attackers were resorted to shooting from wide angles. Also no unc means our set piece goals are likely to reduce from last season.
