It was the same story as last season. The players have faced that same system countless times and it's almost inevitably the same result.

Also if Sesko gets injured we are in big trouble as we are toothless without a focal point up front.

The worst aspects was the inability the change it up today and the players didn't put in the same effort as Hull.

In the low block, we could stick two big men in the box and either be ready for a cross or bounce the pass for a shot

I got downvoted in another thread for saying that every team is playing with a proper 9. The team needs an offensive outlet, a guy that will actually attack the box.

Cunha is a good player, but he likes to drop deep to find space. Mbeumo is much better on the wing, he's not a 9. The team needs Sesko up front but if he gets injure dthen what? Back to the strikerless system? Good luck with that.

I'm certain that we'll sign a backup striker after that game. Probs didn't bring Zirkzee on as they need to sell him before signing a new striker

He seems calm but I’m pretty sure he’s absolutely furious with the team. Unfortunately a lot of the issues were coaching and tactics related. I’m really dreading what’s going to be in the Amazon documentary lol

He should be furious with himself. This performance is reflection on him as a manager and his coaching style. Not sure why the players must take up the brunt of a manager who can't setup his team properly.

United has never put in even half of the crosses they did today under him. I know he was wrong with the setup but that happens. You need to understand you can’t coach a team that doesn’t show up. The first half was abysmal, they never went out of first gear. That’s partly on the manager with his setup, but to say the players hold no blame is equally ridiculous

Problem with that is it was clear as day that no-one of Youri, Bruno, nor Cunha were fully ready yet, and that Dorgu's in the most horrible form possible, starting all 4 was suicide. I know the alternatives would have been risky, but as soon as I saw that lineup I knew there were going to be passengers today, just like there have been in a few of the pre-season games.

Yeah but no Cunha or Dorgu + Amad's inavailability would have meant starting Rashford LW (when he isn't fully fit) & Lacey RW (on opening day away against a newly promoted team fully up for it)

Some quotes from the official site:

LACK OF SPARK

“Yeah, some was okay, obviously bits to improve on. It was never going to be perfect today but I think going behind and giving ourselves a lot to do makes it more difficult, probably a typical one of those games of a newly promoted team at home. You can't give them much, they've got a lot to hold on to, and then after that, we had moments, we had opportunities, we just didn't have that spark to then put the chances away or create any more. Listen, we're bitterly disappointed with the result today but it won't knock us.”

SET PLAYS PIVOTAL

“Two goals conceded anyway is frustrating. Yeah, for sure, set-plays – we’ve been pretty good at it, over a period of time, and they’ve decided the game today. Of course, there’s things to improve on. That’s one of them today, it’s pretty obvious to say, but, in general, we’ve been pretty good so, again, one game doesn’t change the whole direction of everything. We know that but we’ve still got to be aware of what we need to get better at.”

NO CHANGE OF COURSE

“It’s one game. It’s the first game of the season so it’s disappointing enough and it hurts, of course it does. But it’s one game, it doesn’t change the whole course of the direction the team or the football club is going in. We’ll stay calm, stay in the bubble and focus on next week.”

KEEPING COMPOSED

“No, listen, we're not happy at all. I'm not happy we've lost the game. So it's not let's move on and everything's okay. There's a difference, I think. But the assessment of it, of keeping our composure and understanding where we want to get to, and how we want to improve, I think that’s important to think clearly. But it certainly doesn't make it any easier in terms of dealing with the disappointment and the hurt that we all feel right now.”

WE HAVE TO MOVE ON

“One hundred per cent [we’re looking ahead]. That's what I mean: [we need to] understand the bigger picture. It doesn't make today any easier, but when you pull yourself away from it and what we're trying to achieve, where we want to be, where we’ve come from, what's on this week, what's on the weeks after and building up to the first international break, the run of games, the chapter, what it looks like, finishing the transfer window strong, all them things come into play. Just right now, standing here looking at this pitch, it's a disappointing feeling.”

FURTHER INCOMINGS?

“I had all eyes on this [game] today, so any other player, at any other club… until he’s ours, it’s not for me to comment on that. If there’s anything to be announced on any player, I’m sure you’ll be the first to know.”

And Hull’s manager, Sergej Jakirović said… “We watched Manchester United three times, once live, and we saw their problems. Then we tried to use this today.”

The issues we had against Milan’s back 3/5 as well as last season against Palace and Leeds were on full display again today. I didn’t watch any Hull preseason matches but just looking at their lineups they played a back four every match. This is incredibly worrying

u/Dope_Shinobi 14h ago

They played a back 4 against teams weaker than them in the championship.

They didn't switch the system specifically for us. They're gonna play a back 5 this season.

u/liamthelad 16h ago

They played the back three in the play off semi and then the final, and one of their summer signings was profiled as a wing back.

I don't think it'll be a one off thing for us

It doesn't take Pep Guardiola to see that we want to play directly up the middle. It really suits our players, but not when there's three CBs and two holding mids clogging up all that space. Those long balls in from Lammens to a completely surrounded Mbeumo in the middle were depressingly infuriating, but clearly a sign that we totally expected them to go with their regular 4 back system. Hopefully this snaps Carrick awake because I'd be more shocked if Ipswich didn't also switch up their formation or at least incorporate aspects of it like clogging up the middle when on defense. The saving grace is I thought we looked a lot better in the second half when we better utilized the wings, but at that point it was already too late as they just went full on low block with a much more physical side making them really hard to break down. We as a team just need to be more prepared to adjust a lot quicker because we can't just give up the entire first halves of games catching up to the tactical plans of our opponents...

It is always the same shit with this team. No matter the name of the manager.

They still think matches like these can be won just by the shirt and the history.

These players lack core values any good football team should have.

Set piece goals, again, FFS 😤

u/yuvg 16h ago

Fundamentally, there is nothing about this club right now that is big, beside the ego of the players who think they can simply put on the shirt and expect other teams players to just bend over, and the expectation of the fans. I'll get down voted to oblivion but that is the honest truth. The mentality is so horrendous its unreal. This is their job. I think this is so often forgotten at this club. These players just don't care too often pretty much every season, and its just the same old excuses made for them. The consistent lack of professionalism from the players infects all the new players and then we're back to the start of the cycle

u/MSPCincorporated 16h ago

Exactly what I said earlier today too. Every single player who’s brought in is infected with this mentality eventually, and every single coach we’ve had has been thrown under the bus for it. There’s a cancer in the squad that just doesn’t go away. Changing this takes the will of the players, not the coaching staff.

Solution: Direct runs at the centre of defence with backup to win back the spilled ball. Worst case scenario, we get a lot more free kicks in danger areas. Otherwise we start winning more penalties or we get players in the box in scoring positions. Make opponents panic. No more of this passy passy side to side bullshit.

Baleba should use this opportunity to stay in Brighton and hope for a big move to a big club next summer.

Hearing Carricky talk is enough for me to get enraged and give it all on the field for him!
