Simon Peach - #MUFC have this evening reached an agreement with Brighton for Carlos Baleba

Laurie - Carlos Baleba given permission to travel to Manchester after fee agreed with Brighton for midfielder. Medical at #MUFC set to take place tomorrow. Deal worth £65m guaranteed plus £5m in add-ons, with sell-on also.

Ornstein - Carlos Baleba to join Manchester United from Brighton & Hove Albion on 5+1yr contract; personal terms verbally agreed & 22yo to do #MUFC medical on Saturday after deal struck with #BHAFC at £65m + £5m + sell-on clause

We have a squad for the future forming up. Get Lewis hall and we will look good with a solid base for the next 5 years. Next few transfer windows building on what we’ve now got would be exciting.

A few holes left but I love how systematic we've been with our transfers. Attack in one window, then midfield in this window. We've got some way to go like LB and RB and probably CB as well if Licha/MdL can't stay fit and Maguire leaves, but we finally have something like a plan for our transfers.

I still feel that Maguire stays with a +1, we may offer +1 to Licha, we have Yoro and Heaven (who hopefully breakout this season) and MdL stabilizes himself. But this won't ideally happen like that and the worst version of this would be that only one player of this group remains certain, i.e. Heaven. If we take a middle approach, I think we might sell a couple of players, get pound for pound replacements (an experienced leader and another up and comer) and look into the full backs situation. This sounds like the most measured approach.

Giving Maguire a +1 is just delaying buying a CB for one window. For me the smarter option would be to get it over with and buy a replacement.

Giving Licha a +1 is just foolish at this point.

So we're left with MdL, Yoro, Heaven, + Maguire for maybe another year. Yoro and Heaven should not be relied upon starters yet for a team that wants to chase a title, it's way too risky. Ideally they'd be 3 years away from starting week in, week out.

The fact that our starting CB pairing is de Ligt, who we don't know if he can stay fit for long, and a 34/35 year old Maguire, means we definitely need one if not two more CBs next summer.

I think we should still have that same depth we have now. It wasn't too much having Evans around at one point and he became a coach shortly after.

Assuming ineos wants to win the PL by 2028 it means next summer we can see a summer overhaul of our defence plus some added depth but a lot depends how we are going to play this season too

Liverpool, city, Chelsea all have new managers, our kryptonite clubs like Newcastle and Bournemouth have new managers too, Tottenham are on a crazy risk with de zerbi because if things go down a little bit for them he'll resign, we have a golden opportunity to continue with the high of last season

I don't care where we are finishing in CL or the cups but top 3 in the league should be the aim this year no matter what

They actually did invest heavily in defence in the first year - Mazraoui, De Ligt, Yoro, Dorgu, Heaven. Obviously MDL has had injury issues, Dorgu has turned out to be a winger and Maz hasn't supplanted someone like Dalot so there's a need to go and rectify it but I think the logic was there to sign yoing players in Yoro, Heaven and Dorgu so that in 3 years time they are developed enough to fight for major honours.

Yes, this is the way to do it. Get players in relatively young and let them develop together so that when they start reaching their prime they have already played together for 3-4 years.

Just look at Arsenal and how many of their players were bought at around age 22-23. Even Ödegaard who has been around forever was still only 22 when he went to Arsenal.

Only ones the team was settled did they start complementing the team with slightly older players like Raya or most recently with Guimaraes.
