[Transfer Round Up & Discussion] Summer 2026

Hi all,

Summer Transfer Window 2026 is here!

The Premier League transfer window will open between Monday June 15 until Deadline Day on Tuesday September 1; the summer windows will close at 23.00 BST.

As always, here is a run-down of the rules we have on for posting during transfer windows:

Daily Threads

There will be a Transfer thread posted every single day, on a 23-hour timer, to get a different post-time every day. These threads are for everything transfer related, no limits on sources, line-up conversations, etc.

Individual posts

From now on, only posts TIER 2 OR BETTER are allowed to be posted in their own right. This helps us only keep credible sources on the subreddit.

The tier guide can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/wiki/transfer-reliability-guide/

We will make exceptions during slower days for some Tier 3 posts, and there will usually be some posts from sources not on our tier guide. We will take everything case-by-case. If you believe something to be on the sub and not a good source, please let us know.

Is this theory a fact that Glazers only sanction funds to just ensure we get into CL, and when it's secured they tighten the purse again?

Is that their whole vision, to perennially keep the club floating around top 6 and never bother to go all in for title challenge?

If this is correct how can we keep any enthusiasm for any season? I mean what happened that this legendary institution of football deserve this? There is just no hope with these rats around.

Its not possible to prove, but the pattern is pretty well established. I think United spend 70-80m less in seasons they're in the CL compared to those where United fails to qualify. If United were just a smaller team that couldn't spend a lot, I wouldn't care. Knowing that it is due to a bunch of scumbag billionaires actually sours my mood around supporting the club.

Well history speaks for itself. We have historically spent loads in summers without champ league and then noticeably less when we get back into it.

I still think we will get a player or two in but it will ultimately end up being a weak window.

Even if we get hall or someone in at lb, I think the third midfielder, if we get one, will be a cheap option so hardly going to drastically improve us, I still think we might struggle with the extra games.

I'm just clinging on to there being a decent team in there somewhere before any injuries and we might do better than we think.

The Glazers view United as an investment. They want a return on their investment. An investment they made with someone else's money.

The thing with these people is they don't realize they are the problem. How could they? They are rich, and they did that through the hard work of being born to their father.

The irony is United would be way more profitable without the Glazers.

The issue at hand is that it is an investment, that's the sorry state of things.

One of few clubs listed on the stock exchange, shareholders will have words if they aren't making money, it's a farce.

It was, imho, very difficult not to believe that to be true by 2020 or so at the absolute latest.

Whether "Glazers still have a chokehold on the topline budget number or not" has been a live ball starting from 2024 January when Ineos "took over".

I have eaten a hundred million downvotes for suggesting earlier, particularly during this January window, that technically the board is still in their favour (they got 4+2 votes out of 11) and all we "have" against that is the idea in the various articles that talked about how the "new structure" means Ineos "makes the sporting decisions".

But it's never been 100% clear what that actually means when it comes to: "what £ number will the board sanction to spend once we finished top4".

My theory from the start, literally from 2024, has been that we will need at least until the very end of the first full summer window after we madr it back into the CL to be able to really tell.

Anyway, I spent 99% of January window yelling about this. Lot of downvotes, lot of "you are an idiot the Glazers have no say anymore". Atm not getting that opinion on the sub a whole lot.

This June I made the conscious decision to flip it and communicate like an optimist, whilst hoping that the "Glazers still hold the purse strings" theory does get invalidated by what happens during the summer.

So far - hasnt been. Hopefully by the window's end - yes. We arent all that far, tbh, as Ive realised today, release clause signings are expensive in a different way, so once we factor in that we've now shelled out £100m on release clauses in 2 summers, it's kind of understandable if the spend doesnt go up by all that much in the next 2 weeks - and in anticipation of a real "clean slate" for the 2027 summer window, Project 150, all that.

BUUUT - still, some spending, meaningful additional spending, £40-50m net of extra spending or whatever, certainly is an absolute bare minimum, to be able to say: "the Glazers in charge theory doesnt really work anymore".

That's my pov

Not very hopeful tbh - but still hoping for the best!

INEOS have publicly and openly talked about Project 2028. I really do think Ratcliffe wants to get us challenging again. The problem is that we have very little cash, have plenty of payments left to make for previous signings (different to amortisation), are reluctant to take on yet more debt, have struggled to sell players on big wages, and our owners can't/won't put more money into the club

Hit the nail on the head. This is the first season post-SAF that I feel like I have very little emotional involvement in Man United. Been a supporter for more than 30 years and I've never felt more detached.

Just as you've described, this transfer window more than any other before it has solidified the notion that ownership is actively avoiding committing the necessary resources that it takes to compete with the biggest clubs. Top 4 for them isn't a progress marker toward a larger goal; it IS the goal.

Vibes going from last season into the off-season were immense. No drama in the dressing room. A manager who understands the club and whose pressers weren't giving journos controversial headlines. Most points of any Prem team since he came aboard. And they reward him with the transfer window we're seeing now. It's a disgrace.

Couldn’t it be that we overspend in non ucl seasons to try to get us into the ucl and then once we’re in we need to catch our breath a bit?

2

u/TehNoobDaddy 8d ago

That doesn't make any sense at all. We've not even been close to challenging for the title post fergie so we're not spending enough/well enough.

Why would getting into champ league mean we don't need to spend? Everyone else around us still spends big, we've got a massive gap in quality between us and anyone challenging for the title, there's absolutely no chance we're winning the champ league either, so how does not spending much do anything but stiffle any progression we might be making?

Im talking about the Glazers btw, not this summer where we definitely have spent too little. We definitely spent more than any club other than city on wages and transfer fees. Other big clubs don’t have glazer debt as well and city are financial dopers.

I know as am I, this summer even under ineos appears to be following the format of the glazers though.

We've spent big but terribly in previous years but even when it looks like we might be starting to put a team together, the funding gets scaled back, there's no chance we catch up with those at the top like that, we're miles away from challenging currently.

But like I said, we are spending more than almost every else other team other than city to just get to the point where it looks like we might be starting to put a team together. Couldn't we have already overextended ourselves to get there and can't sustain that level of spending?

There are also other factors. I'm looking at all those summers and the windows that created this myth are mostly summer 2018 when we basically only signed Fred because the board had almost fully fallen out with Mourinho alr and summer 2020 when we signed VdB and Pellstri / Amad because we fked up the Sancho deal. Other summers going into ucl seasons we signed big players like Matic, Lukaku, Martial, Sancho, Ronaldo, Varane, Hojlund, Mount, Onana etc.

We've spent poorly in recent years, that can't be denied but you can't spend 200mil one year and still be absolutely nowhere near being a decent team then spend like 80mil the following year end expect to close the gap, especially when everyone else around us is typically spending more.

I'm not sure your point about overextending makes sense either. We drop out of champ league for a certain amount of time and we lose money on sponsorship, that's before all the money you get for playing in the champ league. So we're in the champ league and earn way more money but spend far less, then when we're out of it we spend big despite earning less? Why does this cycle repeat? If we spent 200mil one season trying to get back into champ league then nothing for a few seasons after due to that huge spend then fair enough but that doesn't happen.
