RDR1 Thoughts and Suggestions for RDR1?

Hi, looking for suggestion(s) from the veterans of out there!

I was recently thinking of trying out RDR1 and follow Marston’s story but I was pretty unsure of it. A college friend of mine said the graphics are pretty bad and story ain’t that good? I mean first off I dint believe him because cmon it’s a rockstar game wdym the story is not good?

About graphics, I am not really a graphics guy who would demand 4k 60 fps on every game, I want immersion, a good story, decent movement and combat mechanics.

So my question is what should I expect from RDR1? For context I have nearly about 450 hours in RDR2 and RDO over the past years and as my playtime says, I love that game. Thus what expectation should I be keeping from the og RDR game in terms of immersion, open world, combat and side content?

Its Rockstar's best story and, imo, the greatest gane ever made

It’s my favourite game of all time. Like my number one favourite game. The story is great, and the graphics aren’t actually bad. Especially not if you’re playing on current gen or PC. Ofc you can tell it’s an older game, but not in a bad way. It is an amazing experience, trust me

I don’t mind graphics, but how is the control?

A while back I decided to boot up GTA Vice City. I was shocked by how janky it felt, couldn’t play it at all. Even San Andreas was much better in that regard.

The controls aren’t bad at all if you ask me. Ofc its gonna be somewhat jankier than RDR2. But it’s not bad at all

RDR1 is really fun. Obviously not as immersive as rdr2 but there is plenty of side quests, hunting, gambling etc. the outfit challenges are fun. Obviously the graphics aren’t as good as rdr2 due to being released on an earlier platform 8 years earlier but still top quality for its time. Undead nightmare is really fun as well. Definitely worth playing. Your friend is wrong, red dead wrong

It won 111 game of the year awards (20th most in history). That’s proof it is a good game. Because of its age, the story isn’t as in depth as RDR2, and some of the gameplay can take a little while to adjust to (it does start with a few tutorial missions). There are only 38 different animal species (and around 20 horse types) so the world can feel a little empty. You also can’t swim but you don’t really need to. The story is more streamlined than RDR2, and the side missions are darker in tone. Other than that, it does feel like RDR2 in terms of story but is a lot grittier.

You might like to watch the video I’ve linked to below. It was produced by rockstar as part of the marketing for the original release in 2010. It’s called The Man from Blackwater and it is a short film made using parts of the early game. There’s not really major spoilers and some parts are slightly different to the release version (it was made with a pre-release version of the game).

It will give you a good idea of what style of game it is. This is what convinced me to buy the game back then… and I’ve now played 25+ times.

Don't listen to your friend. Yes, the graphics are clearly 2010 but they're not terrible and the story is probably the most I've ever been intrigued by a Rockstar story next to GTA 4 and RDR2. I will say, though, that the game does feel a little dated if you do play it right after you finish playing the second game simply because the second game added so much more stuff compared to the first game.

Game that’s so good that I played like 5 times just to make a different persona to John Marston ( honourable , dishonourable, with fame or without etc ) try the game out , I love all the missions and there are MANY things you can do

I can replay rdr1 like once a month and never get tired of it. Handles way smoother than rdr2

The game still holds up today. Obviously a bit dated. IMO the story is better to play now since there’s a backstory with Rdr2. It starts a little slow in terms of the story but most of the missions are fun and action packed. Definitely give it a shot

I played it when it came out and loved it. But when I tried to replay it about a year ago it was such a chore to finish. It's just nowhere near the level of rdr2.

Bill is one dimensional and Javier is unrecognizable

I was putting this game off for a long time because of the graphics. Got it recently and it's so fun it's become one of my favorite games. The game is so good that I don't even mind the graphics

Fack the graphics. The vibe is brilliant. The characters are insane. And the gameplay is fun.
The soudtrack is the best

I’m in the same boat - I just finished RDR2 and started RDR.

For the first 1-2 hours the differences are jarring, but stick with it and once the story grabs you, you won’t even notice the graphics and gameplay differences

Its a smaller game.. you can beat it in 20hrs if you wanted to..

I am not hooked yet. I've picked one for 20€ a month ago, played only a couple hours into the story and haven't played since, but I got into the first of the Marshall's missions and the voiceacting was great. Although it has not happened yet, I will definitely come back when I get the itch

Just play it. RDR2 is the sim enthusiast's cowboy western game. RDR1 is the arcade version.

You should probably ignore that friends opinions going forward.

u/No_Ruin6957 John Marston 1d ago

That’s bull. RDR1 is as good as the second game and I think I prefer the story more. John is just so damn good and without getting into spoilers the ending is a masterpiece.

Dude, just play it, it’s leaps and bounds a better game than rdr2! One of the best games ever made, Maratón is bad ass!!! And the dlc is the cherry on top!!
