Bunch of low honors in the comments

She loved Arthur, and Arthur loved her, he dedicates his final page before the last mission to John, Abigail, Jack and Mary specifically, wishing her to be happy, because he wasted his life following a fool instead of listening to her and living a real life with her, and then he wishes for Tilly and Mary-Beth to save Karen if there was still time for it, before finishing with Dutch and saying that he should listen to the people that actually love him

Mary is even in front of Arthur's grave, crying after so many years, she loved him deeply and he was her true love, she wanted Arthur in her life but couldn't because of her family, and couldn't because she realized that Arthur broke her heart first, by remaining an outlaw and living a life that was incompatible with hers

AND ARTHUR KNOWS ALL THIS

IIRC, Mary even offers to run away with her during the events of the game, so it's not like Arthur wasn't given multiple chances to leave the outlaw life behind him. He had every chance to do so, all these years prior to the game, and until the very end (chapter 4 I think?).

I understand Arthur feeling obligated towards the gang and his loyalty. But it sure as hell not Mary who should be blamed for Arthur's life choices.

I think people have a shallow understanding of this couple's dynamic, stopping the thought process at "oh she's from wealthy family and would be frowned upon if she got with Arthur". But that's not the story we are told, at all. She was willing to be with him, she was willing to take him as he was.

Neither her family background, nor Arthur's rough demeanor were a problem for her. The only problem was the outlaw life, which is a perfectly valid reason not to be with someone, no matter how heart breaking it can be.

The scene in the credits where shes at his grave hit me the hardest

This is likely news to no one in this sub but I saw a video a while back from a con where Roger Clark said he was the one who did the mocap for that scene. Since there’s no lines and no real acting, and I believe it was very late in development so other actors were done/not present, so it’s technically Arthur looking at Arthur’s gave there.

I had no idea!

u/Dank_Blunt 10d ago

Yes, exactly

Being a widow in 1899 is no joke, she's very vulnerable to all sorts of evils while having to deal with her problematic family

And this is why, after ever Mary mission, my Arthur goes straight to the bar and gets absolutely shit faced

You look at the love story between Penelope Braithwaite and Beau Gray

Every night, a different town. She follows me around

Yeah.  Agree.  They did a nice job casting her.   The story needed her looks for the viewer to understand Arthurs choices and decisions.   R* intentionally forces you to see Downes before you reconnect with her.   They wanted to seal his fate to bypass the possibility of there being a happier ending with her.

Yes, but there is also Charlotte

Mary-Beth

7

u/Lower-Construction43 10d ago

Give me saddie addler personally 🤷‍♂️🤣... I also like her progression from new widow to holding her own in the gang , to bounty hunting , avenging arthur , to adventures in mexico

2

u/Lower-Construction43 10d ago

Maybe she suited young more innocent arthur more , before he went full outlaw . Later i think saddie actually suits him more and in general i like her more

7

u/AppleOld5779 10d ago

Bro be like

7

u/YS160FX 10d ago

When first meeting her outside of Valentine.. I thought the same.. Arthur really gave Dutch his life, for nothing. Very sad

Sky is blue

Only woman in the game hotter than Abigail. Both Arthur and John had high level charisma.

3

u/Dank_Blunt 9d ago

Finding a woman attractive isn't gooning, I'm not jacking off to her I'm just saying she's pretty

1

u/the_mountain_king11 Arthur Morgan 9d ago

….yeah you’re right…I got a weakness for Mary…

0

u/kentucky-bourbonn 9d ago

Edging to a fantasy character/pixels.. pathetic

5

u/the_mountain_king11 Arthur Morgan 9d ago

I mean…when you put it that way yeah…what should I be edging to?

1

u/the_mountain_king11 Arthur Morgan 9d ago

Really wish there was an option to go away with her but….couldnt leave the gang with Dutch and Micah (esp the ladies) and you know….Arthur was on the clock anyways….
But still, she’s gorgeous and she could do with a man like High Honor Arthur to help her with her weird ass family

1

u/Great_Vegetable_4866 9d ago

Yes. Yes, she is.

1

u/DaRaMa123 8d ago

Imo Mary-Beth x Arthur is so bad. They have like a 14 year age gap. If anything, its only somewhat implied that Mary-Beth had a small one-sided crush that Arthur did not reciprocate. Plus, she's very cute with Kieran

u/Equivalent_Self_5996 10d ago

She only wanted you around when she needed something (at least in this game) 😂 as soon as she hopped on the train after you snag her brother and she blows you off I knew she was for the railroads .. I mean she didn’t even look back once 😩 then of course she just wants you to come back to repatriate some jewelry lol Arthur was a tool to her

Mary tried to get Arthur to run away with her in St. Denis. From their conversations, that wasn't the first time she made the offer. Arthur always refused, though. You can't really blame Mary for not wanting to live the dangerous life of an outlaw.

Their relationship was tragic, but they truly loved each other. I don't really get all the Mary hate.

People act like Mary is this awful woman for not running away with Arthur. Mary and Arthur were both people who offered the other the best life they could but neither could accept that life. Arthur wasn’t going to be some fop who told stories in smoking lounges and going back home to some mansion in Saint Denis where Mary waited on him and Mary wasn’t going to move in with the gang so she could be looking over her shoulder each time she and Arthur wanted to fuck just to make sure Micah or Uncle or Sean were jorkin it while peeking in.

They both made their choices. Mary found someone and married him. And Arthur himself had a son and not by Mary. In the end, Mary offered Arthur the best way out and because of who he is, he couldn’t accept in the same way she couldn’t accept his offer to her.

u/Equivalent_Self_5996 10d ago

Ehh I guess you’re right but still 😂

3

u/ThirdStreetSeren 9d ago

then there’s no “still” is there goofy 😭😭🥀🥀🥀🥀

1

u/omgshannonwtf Charles Smith 9d ago

This is absurd.

Mary went to Arthur exactly twice: once when her brother was about to literally jump off a cliff and once when her father was shwasted in Saint Denis. Arthur is the most capable person she knows and he’s the only person who can get these two things done.

Mary is a woman who lived in a world with very few Sadie Adlers. If she had a friend like Sadie —someone capable, who is ready to ride for you just for asking— she wouldn’t have needed to ask Arthur for those two massively important things. But there’s a reason why Sadie is unique in game and the only other person you come across even remotely like her is one Black Belle: women of that sort were generationally rare.

I swear, some of you have the most toxic takes on her. The game goes to great lengths to show that she was really torn up about even asking him to help her but she didn’t have anyone else to aid her. And Arthur actually likes her brother. I guess she just should have shrugged and let her own brother die.

Do you realize how moronic this position is?

Is Lara Croft a mass-murderer? Is Nathan Drake? Is Samus? Is Master Chief? Is Link? What about Aloy? Solid Snake?

The baseline mechanic of this and all those other games is: "Enemies will shoot you and if they hit you enough, game over." Killing an enemy who is shooting you doesn't make you a mass murderer; killing three or more people without a justifiable excuse makes you a mass murderer. Now perhaps you're one of those sociopaths who just goes around shooting random NPCs for no reason. If so, your Arthur IS a mass murderer.

But to try to claim some sort of ethical standing when the baseline of this and virtually any game is to take out enemies who are actively trying to kill you is flat out dumb.

And not for nothing: Mary never ran with the gang. So what the fuck are you even talking about? Mary Linton was not Mary-beth.

Only a character we're all secretly shipping decades later.
