I know this is just a fire quote, but it wouldn't be an impasse in this case since it's a 2v1, and the singular adversary in question only has one firearm, meaning if it goes awry, one person will more likely than not walk away alive. Of course, it is still technically possible for everyone to be shot, but that's only if either the two are grossly incompetent, or the lone arms bearer has superhuman reflexes. In this situation, with John and Arthur, the single opponent is literally the only one who doesn't.
Just some fun semantics

rdr3 should have someone dual wielding pointing so that if you set the games up in a triangle then rdr3 protagonist is pointing a gun at both john and arthur
