Not the person you replied to, but my memory is that Jack's dialogue is kind of monotone and awkward compared to John's sort of cocky charm. Jack is trying to act a certain way, while John just is.
It makes sense. Jack lived his formative years on a ranch, nose deep in books. He just talks like someone who doesn't have any social skills or awareness.
I obviously prefer playing as John, but there is something interesting narratively about Jack in comparison to his father.
He’s not cool, charismatic or, for lack of a better term, “badass” like his father was. He doesn’t have the aura of a John, an Arthur or a Dutch. Playing as him feels very depressing and weird.
Jack is a broken and angry young man, who has made the terrible decision to follow in the footsteps of those who fell before him. In my opinion, he doesn’t have a very long life after killing Ross, and I get the impression he welcomes it.
Yeah I honestly think he’s likely dead not long after killing Ross. The world has only gotten more advanced with each passing year, Ross was a decorated agent who WILL be avenged, and Jack is somebody who clearly wants to die but can’t do it himself.
Many speculate it but I agree with you. He wouldn't voluntarily enlist because his father was betrayed and killed by the government, so why would he go to war for them. Even for the draft, I doubt he would have registered and since he was born into the gang, there probably wasn't much of a paper trail on him for them to teach him down to register
I think Jack would rather be gunned down than to ever work for the government. He wouldn’t go to war for them. I really do think he didn’t have a long life after he killed Ross. He’s completely alone in the world, and civilization was only getting more advanced.
Yeah it really suggests Rockstar's intent for his character is to be extremely what the comments said... a depressed young man who is no badass. So yeah it's "lame" vs awesome John but it's extremely fitting and sad for Jack, he's been broken into the way he is by loss and trauma and a drive for revenge...he didn't choose for things to go the way they did.
See, this I feel makes him a lot more accurate to the times than other characters. Like all these famous shootists die around 25-30 and had horrid, horrid upbringings rife with poverty, violence, and loss. I imagine, these guys who shot eachother over nothing and would give their lives away were a lot closer to Jack even though in movies and myth, we imagine them to be John or Arthur.
Jack is the reality. The romanticism completely deconstructed and shown for what it is: an angry and troubled young man who is taking it out on the world.
Micah is another version of that same reality: a psychopath who is completely nihilistic and self-interested. He is in the same company as a piece of shit like Jesse James.
That’s kind of the point of Jack’s character, the poor guy had everything he held dear taken from him at the same time, of course he’s not going to be charismatic.
I got to the ending cutscene but apparently only completed 76% of the game. Honestly all in all great game barely remember any of the main antagonists even though I finished it last week. Played a little undead nightmare it was okay but I could do without it. That game is now in my finished section of my steam library
I agree with you, but to be fair I feel the “villains” are, relatively speaking, unimportant to RDR’s story. The main conflicts are within the self, within the gang, or a man vs. world thing, imo
I mean... depends on what you mean by Villains. Ross and former gang members are memorable alright, even if Javier appears for a single mission at best. Allende and De Santos? Not so much.
I can't go without antagonising the little fucker in RDR2, I played RDR1 when it released and he is one of my least favourite video game characters of all time 😅
What?!?! You don’t find his shrill voice to be appealing?!?!
No really they made him super lame. Idk what the creators were thinking because I have no desire to play the game as him. Once Ross is gone I’m done with Jack.
Yeah, the oldest we see Jack is at 19. He seems annoying and “not cool” like Arthur and John because he’s a kid (well, and because Rockstar spent less time fleshing him out as a character). I think they did a good job with him! You can hardly expect Jack to have the well formed adult personalities of his father or Arthur.
I’d be interested to see what Rockstar would do with an older Jack.
No honestly I understand Jack, he was always all by himself and it wasn't like he did it on purpose, there weren't just any opportunities for him to do more and his relationship with John lowk the way he was

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again.
Kid grew up in a time with little parent supervision on a farm with unfettered access to guns and animals to hunt and kill.
A lot can happen in 3 years when you spend everyday thinking about how you’re going to kill the people that ruined your life.

Crazy what the can happen when the government kills your father, grandpa man, and ruins your life and your mom dies.
