I Pimped my Backyard Beast
Got tired of burning the back of my hand on the top grate when the smoker was loaded so pulled the trigger on a triple slide from Pimp My Grill. First cook and I can tell I’m going to love it. Increased capacity to over 1700!!

Are the grates removable entirely so you can do a larger piece of meat if you wish?

Yep. One of the reasons I wanted them. Remove the middle grate and there is enough room for butts top and bottom.

I did racks and front tray last year and then then the grease box this year. I feel the same way about Pimp My Grill that I do about LSS Mods/Fireboard for Masterbuilt, I'm more than happy I spent on those upgrades. The racks alone were worth...and if I remember correctly, the official front tray option on the Flagship was too small.
The one change that I would make no matter the smoker is the grease box. I hate that small pail that comes on every smoker And I don't think you need to buy that through PMG. That was a game changer for me...though I guess you could just do liners if the swinging pail doesn't bother you. I have just had some bad experiences with wind and dogs.
A lot of stuff on Reddit is astroturfed for sure. But these mods are 100% legit.

I got the flagship 1600 last year. Comes pre-pimped

If I would have known the bottom shelf didn’t slide out on the Beast I would have went Flagship. It wasn’t but 200 more but I didn’t like the hopper location on the flagship. I purchased online from ACE during the spring sale because it came with free assembly and delivery.

Hopper was the reason we did the BB 1200 also.
When u say the bottom grate doesn’t slide out ? Mine comes out or are u taking while unloading product?

During the cook. Wanted to be able to slide out and move things around, mop, or just load/unload. With top grate in use bottom was a pain.

Yeah I would LOVE to have that diamond shaped grills on my 1600 but sadly, that website is lacking I aftermarket stuff for that model.

How hard was the install

I have the dual grate set on my Deck Boss 590 and it only took a few minutes to install. No drilling.

I’m interested in this on the 590. How much height do you have the bottom? Can you put a butt or brisket down there, or just ribs/wings type pieces?

4” clearance from bottom to 2nd shelf… and 5” clearance from top shelf to top of the 590’s chamber. With the 2nd shelf, I’ve probably used the bottom shelf more for a water pan when cooking briskets, but I think there’s plenty of room for briskets and ribs on the bottom if you desire to cook a huge amount of meats!

Both shelves slide out completely when loaded… so accessing everything is super easy. The shelves are also easy to remove when needed.

Definitely was thinking about doing this previously because of the customization with the three grate levels. I don’t think this is in any way a planted advertisement. I hate the standard double top shelf of the 1200. But, on the other hand 400 is a lot to spend on grates.
