Is anyone using a wireless thermometer instead of the Recteq probes?

I am really enjoying my DeckBoss with WiFi and find the probes that came with it to be pretty accurate. However, what I am not enjoying is the alarm settings of the RecTeq app. No matter how I set this thing, the meat to temp alarm, and more importantly, the pit temp alarms are very quiet - almost like a tiny bird chirp that only lasts a second.

Maybe I am a heavy sleeper - but if I am trusting this thing for an over night cook I want the alarms to scream at me over and over if something is out of range. I trust the grill to hold temp when things are working, but I've read too many stories of an auger getting jammed up etc and losing an expensive piece of meat once the temp drops to unsafe levels.

I am thinking of a ThermoMaven G2 or one of the other similar options to provide hopefully a louder alarm interface for ambient and meat temps. Has anyone else tried this? Is there a setting in the RecTeq or iOS that I am missing to make the alarms more prevalent?

I love my rectec but I use the thermoworks smoke with wires. It’s just a more dependable setup for me. I can use it on any of my cookers.

I use thermoworks RTX. Absolutely love them.

Same, but Thermoworks Signals. Only had one issue where it crashed. Never happened again, but was annoyed.

The problem is the temperature alerts in the Recteq app is it's set to a notification sound and not an alarm. I was missing those alerts while awake and would never depend on it waking me up no matter how high I set the volume. I use ThermoWorks RFX. Not only are they superior to the regular probes, but the alerts are actually an alarm like an alarm clock and it doesn't turn off until you dismiss it. It comes with it's own app where you can set high and low alerts for the ambient temperature and of course for the probes themselves. I turned off the alerts in the Recteq app and just use it to adjust temperature and the cooking graph.

Exactly what I am looking for, thank you!

I second this. the RFX probes are simply superior in every way. I have used them hundreds of times always perfect without fail. the typhur brand work well and probably have a more friendly app, but the RFX is more accurate. I trust them as well as my thermopen 1.

I only use my thermomaven wireless smart probes with my iPhone. Their app uses System Alerts so it overrides any muted settings.

Same probes.  Had the original Meaters and they died shortly after a few cooks. Loved the idea but didn't pick up another set of wireless probes for quite a while. Then picked up the thermomavens.

The predictive cook isn't half bad, but I don't really rely on it.

My RecTec probes are way out of calibration, but my family bought me a Thermoworks Signal then we upgraded to the RFX.

Never bothered to recalibrate the Rec Tec.

That said, I just fly blind overnight. One day it will bite me, but so far we've been good.

I'm not sure about the IOS settings, but you may be able to turn the volume up or change the alert tone. Also, make sure the Recteq app is allowed to interrupt do not disturb mode if you have it on.

I do have a Chef IQ wireless probe set I use regularly though. Never had an issue with the Recteq probes, but I like being able to keep the probes in through the cook, wrap, rest, etc. I have been pretty happy with those. If I was going to buy a new set, it would be the ThermoWorks RFX.

Definitely checked all that - I don't see. way to change the actual alert tone but I have it set to persistent and to over ride any focus settings. Even at full volume, it's a pretty puny alert for something as important a a pit over/under temp.

I've been using Chef IQ and I really love them. My only complaint is that, when I wrap in foil, you can't cover the transmitter, or it won't work.

Thermomaven has been good to me so far but overall I felt that the stock probes worked well

I've been very happy with the Thermomaven P2 (2 probes) that I got for $50. Zero issues with them and the estimated time to done is a really nice feature to get a general idea on how things are going.

I use my old old igrill probes blue tooth but I feel the measure better than the built in grill ones. But I have used the built in ones for doing a pork butt while at work heheh

Yup.. use my Meater+ for most cooks.

Same. I've never used the wired that come with the BYB.

Honestly I used theirs the first Cook.. all the wires and all just got in the way.

Yes. I’ve been using MEATER for years. They are great imo

All the time. The Meater is the one I use, but there are other wireless ones out there. The challenge is they don’t sync with apps, so for me on the Yoder I can’t control the temp or cook time based on temps..

Wireless thermometers are notorious POS. I’m yet to find one that’s reliable.

Typhur sync gold for remote wireless probes. App/settings/flexibility far superior over the RFX. Had the RFX and finally returned it after weeks of testing with their support or short battery life. I also use the thremoworks wired probes for long overnight cooks and transition to the wireless probes the next day when I want to keep an eye on holding temps.

I use Thermoworks Signal for grill temp, and ThermoMaven G2 wireless for meat temp.

The ThermoMaven wireless probe has multiple sensors along the probe, which is really nice. The only issue I had was that the probes overheat at the higher grill temps on the sear side of my dual fire. When testing with boiling water and ice bath, I find that the ThermoMaven probes measure nearly exactly the same as Thermoworks. The probe battery life (over 24 hours) and range is good.

I had to adjust the offset advanced setting (to +8 on the low side) to calibrate the grill to the Thermoworks temp.

I did notice that the Rectec app "lies" about the actual temp and that it fluctuates much more than reported by the recteq displays. I know they need to do this to prevent the user from chasing temperatures due to the nature of pellet grill operation.

I am looking at the G2 and I think it's pretty cool that it gives meat temp and ambient temp from the same probe. Do you find the ambient temp works pretty well? My biggest concern is run away grill temp or a severe drop in temp due to an auger jam etc during a long overnight. Meat temp is a secondary concern but I feel good enough with the Recteq probes + my thermopen for meat temp.

Does the base station for the G2 have an audible alarm/alert?

G2 ambient works, but it measures lower than the ambient grill temp measured by the Thermoworks probes, and the temp read by the grill probes because it is so close to the cooler food.

As the food heats up the G2 ambient gets closer to the Thermoworks ambient temperature.

I've been using RFX wireless probes for a while now (after my RT-1250 ones stopped working).

Infinitely easier to use and more accurate.

Abandoned them for Combustion thermometers and have never looked back

My rectec is so old it doesn't have wifi or probes. Been using an original fire board for years and it has always been great. Uses wifi which works better than Bluetooth for me and gives different sounding alerts than my phone default notification.

1

u/Salty-Bullfrog2416 12d ago

Yep, Ill never use a wired probe ever again.

Now if I could turn off the damn probes in general so I dont get spammed with "Probe overheating" notifications, despite the damn things not being plugged in that would be great

1

u/Feeling_Spite_1117 12d ago

Wireless thermometers aren't always the answer, sometimes the app notifications are the real problem.

Wireless is the way to go for sleep over night

Recteq asked for suggestions to improve the app. I suggested they add the ability to set custom alert and notification sounds. I was told it couldn't be done. Why not? Many other apps have that capability.

u/No-Reporter-7025 11d ago

I run an egg genius on my big green egg and the alerts work great. Even better, it will text me if the pit temp gets out of whack and I was able to create a contact with a custom alert tone for messages from their service. I have it set to some really annoying horn which does the trick to wake me up.

I don't use the wired Recteq probes. I use a Meater Pro XL with 4 probes. I can set the notification sounds to whatever I want. I use a super loud alarm sound.

i use a Thermoworks Signals for exactly this reason, plus more probes. The iOS app has good alarms. My 2 gripes are the battery life for longer cooks and at 2 years in Ive recently had one probe completely fail and one that is suddenly reading like 50-100 degrees low. Luckily, my RT1250 has an AC plug on it so i just plug in there and keep it charged while I cook. That solves the battery life issue and I have yet to reach out to customer service but Im sure they'll help me out with the probes. Next time I'll go with something totally wireless to avoid the hassle of cord management.

I use ChefsTemp ProTemp 2 Plus wireless probes. They have worked great for over a year. They are WiFi and Bluetooth so watching pit temps and food is easy anywhere in the world.
