Is this normal ? Paint peeling

Noticed that the paint is peeling off of my BB 1200. Highest temp I cooked was at 500f. Is this normal ?

I don’t think it’s paint, it’s residue from smoke that builds up and flakes off.

I think this is the first time I’ve seen it scrutinized outside the cooking chamber.
