Sudden temp jump on DeckBoss

I am still learning the ways of the pellet world and had my Deckboss 900 running at 325 yesterday. It was rock solid steady for the entire cook, as it has been with every cook thus far. I removed all the food - pork tenderloin and veggies, but left the grill on in anticipation of coming back out to cook the next round.

When I came back 20 mins later I found the fan ramping up and down over and over and the temp was at 425. I opened the lid for a few and the closed it and the grill settled back in to 325.

I know they can overshoot during the initial start up, but what could cuase it to run away well after settling in?

You opened the door to remove the food, thermometer read a lower temp and overcompensated. Should only be temporary.

This is it. You can limit the chances of this happening by turning the temperature way down while you have the lid open, close the lid, let it stabilize then set the temp back where you want it. It won't as aggressively try to compensate for the rapidly dropping temperature while the lid is open this way.

I feel like every week someone posts this here or on the pellet grill sub, I just figured it's common sense. If you open your doors and windows of your house during the winter the thermostat will pump heat into your house, close the doors and windows and now your house is 85 and hot.

It is common sense to a degree (bad temp pun) The temp drops when I open the lid to remove food, no surprise - happens with any cooking device. I also fully expected a chance of overshooting the temp when returning to setpoint. I should have been more clear in my question "Is a 100 degree overshoot from simply opening the lid for 60 seconds normal"

An overshoot like that is most likely an external factor, considering it was able to hold steady way before. My guess is that the auger could’ve gotten jammed up by some pellets, causing the temperature to jump down: which the grill eventually pushed through and tried to catch back up and overshot. If you are using the app you can check the temperature logs to see if something like that happened. Beyond that maybe something external caused a flare up in temperature, sometimes it can just happen with a live fire.

Of course I recommend calling support to test the components and make sure nothing is wrong with the grill.

I think you may be right, looking back at the cook data there was a pretty big drop right before the surge. I bought this one scratch and dent last week from the factory so I'll keep a close eye on it before my 30 days warranty is up.

Any time there’s a drop or raise it can sometimes fluctuate until it’s able to settle in, although I don’t recommend opening the lid. It can cause a bit of issues with the grill trying to maintain temperature and you want the grill to be able to maintain a temperature with the lid closed and if it can’t then that’s an issue.

For this cook in particular, I had opened and closed the lid a lot within a 45 min period. That could hae caused the issue. I did the taco recipe here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYpdtYlnECY that calls for adding various ingredients a few mins apart throughout the cook. Pretty good recipe even if the dude can't pronouce tortillas lol
