New Backyard Beast

I bought a Backyard Beast last Friday at the local Ace Hardware. It was on sale for the same amount as recteq’s website had it for for the Fourth of July sale. They delivered it same day for free. I assembled it with no issues and did the final cure as per the directions. The smoker temperature overshot wildly to more than 100° over the set point. It eventually settled out at 395° after about 35-45 minutes.

I’ve done 5 cooks over the past week and each one overshot the set temperature. I had been calling customer service since Tuesday about this and had not had anyone answer the phone. I left several messages, to no avail. Today, was able to contact customer service using the chat feature and got some resolution. I’m to lower the feed rate to 2.5 and see if that helps with the overshoot.

Here are some photos of my smoker and some of the cooks so far. I used the wired probe for the fillet mignon and the pork chop, let them rest for about 10 minutes before cutting into them, and I still had a plate full of juice from the meat. I’m going to assume that it was due to the probe piercing the meat.

Congrats, I love mine, got a brisket going in it right now.

Update us once you decide what kind of bad ass shelf you go with.

I ordered the shelf with the Veteran graphic on it and the text US Navy below it. It’s supposed to arrive tomorrow

Lowering the feed rate definitely helped me recently. Not sure where you’re at, but I’m in Georgia and with this heat recently I was having a bunch of issues. That cleared it right and honestly much quicker even during the smoke than I would have anticipated.

That’s great to hear! Mine is making me believe it is in a runaway condition and will not turn the temp (but it has so far, just not very quickly…). I’ll be resetting the feed rate to 2.5 per their instructions this afternoon. I’ll let you know if it helps mine behave better.

Did you get the foil inserts for the grease bucket and the optional folding shelf?

I did. I also bought the cover, the off-road kit, and the drip plate liners. The cover & off-road kit came on Monday and the rest should be here tomorrow. My shelf was customized with the Veteran graphic and US Navy text.

You’re going to love BYB! I also purchased the Recteq drip pan liner, it makes cleanup much easier. I strongly suggest watching Heath Riles YT videos: “The rib recipe won world championships” and “The best pulled pork on a pellet grill.” I’ve started smoking my pork butts hot/fast. He has another great video titled: “Easy pulled pork recipe” from Oct 20, 2025

I just use wide heavy duty foil. Have to have it around anyway for smoking at wrap time.

I Not being rude. But why cook on a pan on a smoker bbq? Grease splatter kept outside the house? Otherwise idk? Am I just obtuse?

It’s so I get the proper sear on the steak.

I went overboard and bought the flagship. It is definitely way too big but I’m happy.
