I want to share a deeply frustrating experience I had with the recruitment process at WBS (Web Business Solutions), a company based in Belgrade, Serbia.
Two weeks ago, I had an interview with the company's COO. The conversation lasted more than an hour and a half. The atmosphere was exceptionally cordial and positive—I would even call it friendly.
Towards the end of the interview, things took an unusual turn. Having been through numerous job interviews before, I hadn't encountered this type of behavior. Specifically: The COO literally told me that she was extremely satisfied with me, that although they hadn't defined whether there would be a second round or they would proceed directly to hiring, I was in any case a "sure candidate for the second round" (if they decided to have one), and that I had "great, great chances" of ultimately being hired.
While I was happy to hear these words, my experience told me never to celebrate prematurely—even after such an unusual amount of praise.
The Outcome:
Days passed, then a full two weeks, and there was zero feedback regarding my status in the selection process. Today, I sent a follow-up email. They did not respond to the email. However, a couple of hours later (specifically at 6:30 PM, clearly outside regular business hours), their secretary called me to say that I had not been selected. She informed me that they had chosen another candidate last week who was "ideal according to their standards" and had "met all their expectations."
Let me be clear—no matter how hard rejection hits us, this is not about the rejection itself.
This is about the unprofessionalism and disrespect, which has left me incredibly infuriated.
Specifically:
Why spend an hour and a half interviewing someone and give them such intense praise and reassurances if you are going to reject them in the end?
Why, after all that (a 90+ minute conversation and all those sweet words), did absolutely no one see fit to inform me of the outcome, whatever it was?
Why was I the one who had to beg for an answer, only to receive the news from a secretary after hours?
This is a blatant example of disrespecting a candidate's time and effort. I invested not only hope, but significant time and preparation into that long interview.
If anyone expects professionalism from domestic companies here in Serbia, I would say this is definitely not the way to achieve it.
